I can install Linux (Mandrake) with no problems up to the X Configuration
step. My geForce 256 video card is not on the list. I tried using "Unlisted
Card", but when Linux tries to run a test, the screen goes wacky, and never
reverts back to a readable screen, which forces me to install all over
again.

I'm very new to Linux. Could someone please help me configure X given that I
have a geForce 256 (Nvidia) video card.... Thanks...

Subject: Permission Question . . .
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 14:38:06 GMT

Hello, all. I have a question for the group, and I hope you'll give me
a little more understanding of the topic than I currently have. Based
on the man pages I have read and Que's Using Linux, my understanding
is that the owner and the group of the file or directory has
permission to modify the file or directory (if set to at least 660).

However, I am unable to make any changes (write, delete, chmod) to a
file as a member of the group, only as the owner or as root. (I have
even tried setting suid and gid which did not change the behavior.)

I want to enable a few users to be able to modify any files or dirs,
and a few users to be able to modify only specific files or dirs.
Currently only the owner of the file or dir can make any
modifications. If a member of the group uploads or copies a file then
that user can modify that file only.

How do I get around this, or is it even possible?

A few months ago it was possible to download DB/2 for personal use from
the IBM site for the "cost" of filling in a registration. Not sure if
it was a beta or a full product. A big download though at 60 MB.

Essentially so.

There are some printers that are supported via patches to Ghostscript;
sometimes getting this to work is a bit more than "rpm -i ghostscript.rpm"

The easiest way to do this is to use the commercial Partition Magic
program from PowerQuest (http://www.powerquest.com). There's also at least
one open source ext2fs resizer (ext2resize, I think), but it's not nearly
as easy to use, and it opens up serious potential for human error. I also
don't know how reliable it is, even if it's used perfectly.

AFAIK, pine does all tehse (directories, news functions), and it's pretty

Samba is only useful if you've got two computers hooked up via a network,
one running Linux and the other Windows. From the nature of the poster's
question, my guess is it's one computer that dual boots both OSs. If so,
Linux does include NTFS drivers, but the write support is reportedly
flakey and may not be included in all (most? any?) distributions. If you
really want to play with fire, go into the kernel configuration and check
in the filesystems area. Enable the experimental/dangerous read/write NTFS
support. Like I say, though, this support is reportedly flakey; I've seen
reports of completely trashed NTFS partitions from using this support for
just a few minutes.

I am looking for a backup program that:
- supports tape (QIC 80)
- supports compression of data
- is save (does not create an archive and compresses that like tar)
- is easy to use
- is free
- is more or less fast

I am thinking of a script or Tcl/Tk interface to afio, but I could not find it

The most common reason people can't get this to work is that
they leave of the '%s' following the command to invoke the
acrobat reader.

660 (rw for all) permission allows you to read and write to files,
but it doesn't necessarily allow you to enter the directory
containing the files. You need x permission for that.

We are running RH6.1, 6.0, and some 5.2, and autofs works.
But I seem to remember we may have had some mounting problems
earlier. There were some changes in how nfs mounting worked.
But everything seems to be okay with the latest knfsd and
knfsd-clients packages. There was also a minor problem with
the network not being started properly or some such thing
on booting which was fixed by getting the latest initscripts
package.

Most likely you can fix these problems by upgrading the appropriate
packages, e.g., gnome-core, gnome-libs, gmc (which also requires
upgrading mc and mcserv). You probably should also upgrade your
enlightenment package.

There have been problems with early versions of gnome packages.
But I thought the version of gnome that came with 6.1 was
relatively up to date. Still you might try upgrading to the
most recent versions. Also upgrade gmc (which also requires
upgrading mc and mcserv). This is a common source of crashes.

If you are doing it with rpm packages, you should just be able
to use the upgrade (U) option. I've done this many times
without any problems. In some cases there may be dependencies
among packages so you have to figure out the proper order, or,
more simply, upgrade the relevant packages together by making
them all arguments to one rpm -Uhv command.

The look really isn't the issue for me... if that were my only
problem, there would be no problem. I rather like Windowmaker. The
problem for me is mainly the insane complexity of everything
associated with X. I don't particularly enjoy wading through an
elephantine /etc/XF86Config file, attempting to *locate* (let alone
fix) whatever problem du jour is causing X to not start.... then
winding through a maze of subdirectories, finally landing about eleven
or so directories deep, just to get to a config file that lets me set
up my window manager... et cetera... I swear, I'd almost rather be
dealing with WinDOS *.ini files.

Thanks to everyone who's offered suggestions. I've been taking notes
and checking out all the alternatives mentioned. Please, by all
means, keep 'em coming!

By the way, does anyone have any information about the GUI that's

Older kernel versions sometimes do not detect PCI PnP devices correctly.

Subject: vfat filesystem for data exchange ?
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 17:32:05 +0100

Hi all,

is the vfat filesystem suitable to share data between Windows(98) and
Linux
*and* preserve most of Unix filesystem information ? Or, in other words:

Which part of the unix specific information of the filesystem do I loose
if
I use the vfat filesystem

Is there an optimal filesystem to share data between Linux and Windows ?

Roger
