Go to
www.linux.org
There is a lot of information there
Any "standard" PC will work (even 386s are good). Of course if you need
to run big and slow applications you will need a more powerful machine.
I recommend 32 MB for text only users and 64 MB at least if you are
planning to use a GUI with a heavy desktop enfironment such as
KDE or Gnome
Be aware of incompatible hardware, such as Winmodems and some
video cards
Good Luck

gcc is the C-compiler. So it doesn't link with libstdc++ as default .
For C++ code you want to run g++ .

Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 19:15:39 GMT
Hi All,
I created a compressed cpio archive file (test.cpio.Z) on HP-UX using
the following commands.
find test -depth -print | cpio -ohumdBc (where test is a directory)
compress test.cpio
I used the following cpio command to extract files from the compressed
cpio archive file.
zcat test.cpio.Z | cpio -iumvdc
The command works on HP-UX and Solaris but not on Linux. I got the
following error.
cpio: premature end of file
If I change "cpio -iumvdc" to "cpio iumvd", It works. "-c" option of
cpio command on Linux seems to be the problem. Does anyone know why it
does not work on Linux?
TIA.

[root@LINUX /etc]# httpd: cannot determine local host name.
Use the ServerName directive to set it manually.

I checked both 'hosts' and 'HOSTNAMES' files in which I specified the

Could this conflicting host name be the cause of the above error message

Howdy, I'm using mkisofs and cdrecord to generate an iso image and then
burn it onto a CD. Are there any utilities available for making a
partial burn and using maybe half the disk and then doing another burn
which will fill the rest of the CD later.
It would require leaving the disk open to create a later burn. This is
possible under EZ CD Creator for Windows, I am told.
Just wondering what the status is for such under Linux.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: KDE2 Prealpha binary's for 02282000 available
Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 19:50:30 GMT
A new version of the KDE ALPHA binaries are available
at nebsllc.com. Please read the README file in the
same directory.
These binaries are built from CVS as of 28 February
2000 at 8am Eastern Standard Time (-0500). Korganzier
has been merged with kdepim so korganizer package is no
longer present. Abbrowser did not compile so it is not
in the kdepim package.
There has been an update to the qt-copy and you will
need to get a new version. The experiment with the
small version of qt-copy did not work, so we are back
to one version.
These files are available via ftp from:
ftp://ftp.nebsllc.com/kde2/current
or via http at:
http://www.nebsllc.com (follow links for kde2 Alpha
binaries)
You will also be able to find these at:
http://www.htw-dresden.de/~s2697
The installs have been tested by me on a RedHat 6.1
machine. They have also been reported to work on all
other distributions.
If you are running prior Alpha's I highly recommend you
update. There are a lot of fixes and some structural
changes in the packages.
You will also find Source tar.gz's in the same
directory.

Hello,
I think mySQL is the best. You will have to verify that for your self. We
use it on our jobsite http://www.jobs-it.net . Prior to that we tried
ORACLE,SYBASE and SQL Server(On NT) and I can say none absolutely none
of these databases were able to
match the performance that mySQL is giving us now and it is FREE.
Two things, if you need things like stored procedures, transactions then
perhaps you
will say NO to mySQL, but thenn there are ways around those.
Scalability, contrary to popular believe that ORACLE etc.. is scalable it
didn't in our
case. ORACLE or for that matter any of the databases that we tested did
not just did not scale up. Amongst the lot in our test SQL Server came
second to mySQL.
mySQL can hold loads of data infact TCX the company that develops it
claims they
have it running with 40GB of data. We have tested it to 500MB and it is
rock solid.
I do not know about Postgres SQL but I read it is very good and has
things like transactions etc .. etc.. I will like to try it but as soon
as I realised mySQL was doing what we wanted I just did not bother.
Again with drivers, I have tested and use it with ODBC (myODBC is mySQL
speak)
and it is excellent.
Hope this helps and please not this is my observations.

You should really know what your getting into before you try such a
thing. Linux has many great features and offers high stability,
however, you may loose a lot of features that your used to using on your
Win 98 or 95 machine. Check out the FAQ posted weekly in this NG for

Perhaps you have an entry for /dev/fd0 to be mounted of
/mnt/floppy set as ext2. Since your floppies undoubtedly
are DOS formatted floppies, you should have either auto or
vfat there.

One must be carefull with the root file system. Namely, one
doesn't want to try to tar /proc. In addition, one should use
the l option to make sure one doesn't tar other partitions
mounted under /. The best method is to tar the individual
directories in / as well as any files at the top level.

vfat would be okay for most purposes, but don't take the
permissions seriously when looking at it from Linux. It
is a bit tricky to arrange it so users other than root can
write to or modify files in such a system, but it can be done
by suitable user options in /etc/fstab. The only remaining
problem is that under Linux, in a text file, the end of line
character is a single line feed character but under DOS/Windows
it is a pair of characters, a carriage return and a line feed.
But there are programs for converting from one to the other.

SCSI drives have in the past been faster and had other advantages over
IDE drives, but the newer IDE drives do quite well, so this is no
longer a significant advantage. However, haveing a SCSI interface
does allow you to use a wider variety of peripherals. Perhaps when
USB support becomes available with the next generation of kernels,
this may no longer be so relevant.

You can dop pretty much everything from the command-line. You need
x-windows only to make things look pretty, or if you something that
*absolutely* requires the mouse. Usually, x windows makes it easier for
you to do what you're used to, but you can actually do everything (more
or less) from the command-prompt.

Any programs or default setups should be set in the /etc/skel/

the new user's directory when you create it. Hope that helps. If this

Vlar,
<br> Any programs or default setups should be set in
the /etc/skel/ directory. Whatever is placed here will automatically
be copied over to the new user's directory when you create it. Hope
that helps. If this is not the answer you were looking for, sorry.

Subject: Seeking remote control and tn3270 software
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 03:49:06 GMT
Is there a remote control software solution for remote controlling Win
NT machines? I am hoping that there is something similar to
pcAnywhere. I would like to dial from a home machine with Linux and
connect to Win NT workstations and servers.
Also any reccomendations for tn3270 software?
Thanks

Subject: how do I install programs?
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 17:39:50 -0500
I have tried to stick with RPMs for as long as possible. Unfortunately,
not everyone offers their programs in RPM format. That's ok, I'd like
to learn how to handle tarbals so I can install/uninstall all programs.
Where can I find documentation regarding doing a 'make'? I have never
done one so I need something that will practically take me by the hand.
Thanks

I had a problem getting my ls-120 drive recognized upon boot. The way I
finally got the problem solved is to go into my bios setup and make the
ls-120 the promary boot drive, not my floppy drive. You'll need a
fairly recent bios to do this.
Then I was able to mount it using the command that Dances With Cows
provided below.
Hope this helps.
