Whenever I try to compile my new kernel I make it all the way down to
the "make modules install"
then it chokes on trying to write to LILO.conf .......it says their is
no such file or directory...which is true..
because I don't use LILO...I use LOADLIN.......
I tried just creating a file named lilo.conf and when it gets to
the important part...again...it says it can't
write the MBR to device 306 or something...
If I remove lilo from my system wil THAT help???
Thanks in advance ....I'm ALMOST there...:0
This compile will solve almost ALL my SuSE probs...i.e. no sound in the
kernel, and no scanner support...and I want to use my wacom with my
ps/2 mouse...
Thanks...again...if you know about this

Of course. There are dozens of editors available. Nothing forces you to
use vi to edit a file. Try jed or joe or nedit or gxedit or xwe or ....
You may not have all of these installed but they're not hard to find.

Well, it seems that ns4.5 nt has some problems recognizing the messages that were
downloaded AND marked as read via ns4.5 linux.
When I specify View/Messages/Watched Threads with Unread, did not show anything.
But when I went into this thread (which is watched), and expanded the thread, the
earlier posts that I made and downloaded and marked as read via ns 4.5 linux are
still unread on ns4.5 nt. Moving between View/Messages/All then back to
View/Messages/Watched Threads with Unread now shows this thread.
Oh, well...

Hi everyone!
I am looking for a good IP telephony product to install on a Linux 2.2 machine
(Pentium-based). I know very little about the internet telephony, hence any
suggestions, comments, recommendations, etc. are much welcome.
Thanks in advance.

I discovered a minor bug with the more command when used as:
ls -al --color | more
If the actual file is printed on the next line, the link will say:
<.....> .newsrc ->
;34mnt/hda5/Program Files/Netscape/Users/jmsalvo/news
instead of coloring the actual file that it is linked to. ;34 seems to
be part of the color code for navy blue as shown with ls -al --color
| less
On the other hand, sometimes, the color becomes 'permanent' to the
terminal , until you perform another ls -al --color | more

I can remember when I was forced to switch to the standard PC
keyboard, and hated it for months. However, I guess the
geometry of my hands is such that when I eventually got used to
where the keys were, they don't bother me at all by being in
those locations. In fact I much prefer to have both a control
key and and a meta (alt) key on both sides of the space bar.
(Note that I am NOT thinking of a keyboard with an ESC key on
the upper right side, which is too disgusting to even talk
about.)
All of which brings to mind the biggest problem with using a
non-PC keyboard on anything... the simple fact that virtually
everything else is indeed going to have a PC style keyboard on
it. Maintaining a habit with any other style of keyboard would
make my life absolutely miserable, given that in any day I am
forced to use several different keyboards and do NOT have the
option of replacing any of them much less all of them with
something that suits my odd tastes.
With that said, I should point out that when buying a new
computer, I first look for the best keyboard and monitor that I
can possibly afford, and budget for those before even looking at
cpu's, memory, hard disks and all of the other areas where it
might make sense to skimp a little. It makes no sense whatever
to skimp on a keyboard or monitor if they are going to be used
for hours a day.

Subject: Can't compile kernel with sound card support, HELP!

Hi
I have RedHat 5.2 installed on my laptop. Everything worked fine, except
apm.
I have changed the default configuration to include apm support such as
power-off
on shutdown. This compiles fine. Them I noticed that sound wasn't
supported. I
changed the configuration to include sound card support and ran as usual
make dep, make clean, then make zImage. (and previously make mrproper)
This time the compilation crashed...
Below I have entered the output.

I have a Pentium II 400 running Red Hat 5.2. I've compiled egcs 1.1.1.
Is it worth recompiling source using this compiler with the -march=i686
option? I noticed that by default it sends -march=pentium.
Any help appreciated

i also, always choose a good monitor and keyboard. As you rightly
