The path should be pretty much irrelevant if the system's set up properly.
The fault is probably in /etc/passwd...

No, do cd /etc and check that the first line of your passwd file looks like
this...
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

I have recently installed a Creative Geforce graphics card. When trying to

is trying to synch. I have tried reconfiguring xf86config, but still cant

Not so. The FSB and RAM speeds are coupled in some chipsets, but
not others. In particular the newer chipsets (due out soon, watch
this space) will be using DDR memory and will have faster RAM speeds
than FSB speeds. PC-266 seriously *rocks*, btw; I have inside tracks
to some of the system houses and if you've been drooling over PC-133
you ain't seen nothing yet.
If possible, get an MB capable of PC-266 even if you stuff it with
PC-133 for the short term. You *can* run the FSB at 200 even with
PC-133 memory, at least in the chipsets I've been reviewing. For
more (lots more) on way cool memory technology check out
http://www.ami2.com
But please don't bug the gang there. AMII is a very small outfit
with their hands full dealing with the Really Big Boys trying to
make sure that you can get mobos with rocket memory.

Been there, done that, didn't get no stinkin' t-shirt. Somehow, NT is
*not* smart enough to overwrite LILO on the MBR -- at least that's my
experience. So, yes, I would find a DOS boot disk and DOS fdisk,
boot that disk, and fdisk /mbr, then install NT, then (probably)
have to re-install Linux b/c NT will take over the disk. FPOS.
Just follow the Linux+NT-Loader Mini HOWTO to get NT Loader to also
boot Linux.
Good luck.

Subject: KMail and SMTP Return code 503
Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 19:38:09 +0000
G'Day,
I am currently running KMail [1.0.20] on Red Hat version 6.0. I have had
this working but for some obscure reason it has stopped working when
trying to send mail via smtp. I CAN read all my mail o.k. from my pop3
addresses
When I try to send mail from KMail I get the following error;
Sending Failed
a SMTP error occured
Command DATA
Response 503 Valid RCPT TO <recipient> must precede DATA
Return code 503.
Yes I am entering the recipient address o.k.
I also get the same error on several ISP's
I have netscape installed and I am able to send out mail via netscape
using SMTP. Additionaly I can send out mail the hard way by telneting
into my ISP's smtp address on port 25
Looks like some king of configuration problem that I am having but I
cantfigure it out.
Any help out there would be appreciated.
Cheers John.

No source is available for this module.
Is it possible to create some kind of

If you can't send mail via SMTP, it is because your system is
misconfigured in some way. Pine speaks SMTP directly, make sure you
have it set up to do that. In that case, it will simply open a
connection and send the mail each time you press 'send.' This means
you must be online to use Pine in that manner. The advantage to using
sendmail is that it will queue outbound mail until you go online.
Sacha> Last question. Should I use Pine or Mutt ?
Pine has more features. I've had bad luck with Mutt and SMTP,
myself. Use Pine if you want features, use Mutt if you want
simplicity.

Is there a SB Awe64 PCI version on the market? (ES1371 chip??)
I found a store selling a SB PCI card, with an ES1371 chip
with no drivers or docs, pretending to be Awe64, but it's nowhere
written on the card. The only thing I could find was ES1371 chip.
I know that Awe64 is usually ISA.
But if it is awe64 PCI, does it work with linux kernel 2.2.14?

No, I don't want any explicit placement. I want the window manager to
be able to decide where to put it based on whatever placement policy
it's using at the time. It seems that somewhere, a placement of +10+10
(or something close to that) is hardcoded in either the script that
lauches Netscape (I couldn't find it there) or in the binary itself
(wouldn't that be ugly?).
Any other ideas?

Hi,
I just instaalled a Soundblaster card into my box. However, I lost

My question is there are 4 holes at the back, one green, one red and two
black. Which one should I connect my speakers to? I salvaged this sound

Thx.

My guess would be a loaded CPU or questionable sound driver install.
To test the first use 'top'. Find out what, if anything, is consuming
CPU. Stop what is loading the CPU, then try xmms again.
You might try the alsa sound drivers if the drivers provided by the
kernel aren't working too well.
I have a 300 MHz Pentium and run alsa sound drivers and:
$ rpm -qa | egrep '(netscape|xmms)'
netscape-communicator-4.7-1.1
netscape-common-4.7-1.1
xmms-mesa-1.0.1-1
xmms-esd-1.0.1-1
xmms-1.0.1-1
No problems. Sound is mostly smooth. I get an occassional blip when
a new window is being created in Netscape.
Best of Luck...

Prior to installing NT, add the c: partition (hda1 vel simm.) to
your LILO config. *Then* proceed with installing NT. When NT
goes through its mandatory reboot, choose whatever you decided
to call the c: partition at the LILO boot prompt. All there is
to it. No need to reinstall stuff, install in a particular order,
etc., etc., which just adds a lot of needless extra frustration
to what is an extraordinarily straightforward process.
NTLOADER (and 2 other files) need to be at the root of the c:
partition. NT does not install anything to the MBR; its boot
files go into the boot track of the c: partition only.
Everything in the NT installation *except* ntloader, ntdetect,
and boot.ini will go into the \winnt directory, which may
reside anywhere on any partition primary or logical, so
long as the partition is either FAT or NTFS. But the
boot track of c: and only the boot track of c: will be what
you add to LILO prior to the NT install.
Or, if have not wiped your partitial install of NT yet, add
the c: partition to LILO now, boot into this c: partition,
and your NT installation will likely recover and proceed from
where it was interrrupted at the reboot phase.
Cheers,
