in your /etc/hosts file you sould have the folowing line.
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
if you are tyring to network a few computers it's easer to setup and
copy /etc/hosts files than to set up DNS. If you are trying to network
100 computers it's a diferent story. You should read linux network
administration at http://www.linuxdoc.org . If you get "DNS server may be
broken" when you attempt to connect to a computer via the Internet, contact
your ISP for correct configuration info.

heh...RPMs are never new enough, in my experieince. They are usually
a few beta releases behind and sometimes a few major versions behind. I
have decided that instead of using RPM, I download and compile the source
code.

What do you mean by "virgin source code"? Debian source packages include
pristine upstream sources: so, I believe, do Red Hat source packages.
However, Debian packages, like Red Hat packages, are patched to varying
degrees to bring them into compliance with policy and adjust them to work
smoothly with the rest of the distribution.

For me, the best reason to use a non-GUI interface (sorry Mac users) is

I had alot of problems with lilo. I've overwritten my MBR, gotten the 1010101,
and got stuck with LI waiting for the LO. I have a 6 gig and 10 gig
HD and am doing alot of installing and checking things out. I have just
switched to using loadlin.exe. It is very simple to use and I think I can
experiment without all the complications of LILO. I can usually get to the C
prompt without problems. I have copied a vmlinuz file from each of the boot
images. They are on the boot disk used to install(either floppy or cdrom) When
I copy to the c: I label them vmlinuz, vmlinuz1, so I can test different
versions or kernels. So far it seems less complicated that LILO.

As a user of Red Hat 5.2 and 6.0 I would give them about a B rating.
Hopefully others will give you feedback... but my first attempt at Linux was
with Red Hat 6.1 but I found too many bugs.
I have been watching these news services for several weeks now and have
noticed that those using Mandrake are often asking good technical questions
and not mentioning any problems with the operating system itself.

    I'm using RH6.1 on a P266 w/ 128MB RAM. After a complete reboot and

Any idea's as to what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

No, I didn't try to ping it, but... In my original post, I didn't say
that I typically use my school's dialup connection and run fetchmail,
where my mail is downloaded from my school's mail server.

I was home for spring break and using my parents' dialup connection, and
trying to download from my school's mail server when I got the fetchmail
errors. Now that I'm back at school, and once again using the school's
dialup, everything has returned to normalcy.

I'm guessing that my school may not allow POP or IMAP connections from
outside its domain. I'll investigate further.

Thanks,
Matt

Did you, by any chance, set X at a lower resolution than the RedHat
installer recommended? That was the case when I had this problem. In
my case, Redhat recommended 1280x1024 but this resulted in an image
that was much too small (especially text) on my 15-inch monitor so I
reset it to 800x600. Unfortunately, I did not uncheck the boxes for
1280x1024 and 1024x768.

I fixed the problem by opening a console window, running Xconfigurator
(note that the first letter is capitalized) in text mode, and manually
unchecking all resolutions except the one I wanted to run. Not quite
as satisfying as upgrading to a 19-inch monitor, but much less
expensive. <g>

Update on this...

I finally got to a shell with the SCSI driver loaded (got toms rtbt working
after going back to work and picking up the floppy drive for my laptop).

I've re-run lilo on the root disk (/dev/sda1) several times, and it hasn't
made any difference. I do notice that lilo says "Warning: /dev/sda1 is not
on the first disk," which I don't think it said before. But the system is
obviously finding the disk. It just isn't able to completely boot from it.

Any other ideas?

TIA

Nothing!
Linux uses memory differently than windoz. When it needs physical mem it
will swap to free physical mem.

I had the problem with the machine hanging on 'LI'. After several hours of
reading I found the 'lilo -linear' command. Something do to with big drives I
think.

Try to get your system booted with a boot disk and run that command and see if
it works.

I am no means an expert on this and my solution may be the wrong one for you
problem. I suggest you do some reading as well.

Better to use afio with tob script for backups to tape: it combines
compression with save storage. More info in the docs of afio.

Subject: 'lilo' w/IDE & SCSI (was Re: Used to boot; now doesn't. Says "LI")
Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 09:36:51 GMT

So, it seems to be evil to run 'lilo' with my IDE disk plugged in if I'm
planning on booting from a SCSI disk. If I unplug (or disable) the IDE disk,
boot up, run lilo, shut down, re-enable the IDE disk and boot back up,
things work fine. If I don't disable the IDE disk before running lilo,
I hang at 'LI' on boot (booting from sda, SCSI ID 0 on an Adaptec 2940).

I assume there's an appropriate option in lilo.conf to fix this, but it
wasn't apparent to me by reading through the docs. Could someone point
me in the right direction? Having to disable a disk every time I want to
upgrade the kernel is annoying to say the least.
