Then, look at the 'major' and 'minor' node numbers for 3 and 5,
respectively. I believe 3:05 is /dev/hda5, which would be the first logical
partition on your primary master.

Oh...
I'm having a simular problem.
After applying the udma patch to kernel 2.2.14 the network
module was not autoloaded anymore. If I tried to insmod it
manually, I got some error messages about incompatible
symbols and the module refused to load.
In my case the network card is a NE2000 pci with a realtec
chip. Linux distribution is SuSE 6.4. MOBO ASUS P5A.
I ended up with recompiling the kernel with network card
support within the kernel, which strangely worked.
This seems to be a known issue with kernel 2.2.14 and the udma
patch. But oviously not documented.

That's strange.
I have burned a few (more than 100) audio cds with cdrdao.
Lots of them without a gap between certain tracks.
I have no problem at all. I've testet with 5 different audio cd
players.
However both cdrdao and cdrecord suffer from incompatibilities with
drive firmware. You have to try different versions, till you find the
one that realy does work with your hardware.
Sometimes an older version workes, but newer ones are broken.

You might want to take a look at Andamooka (http://www.andamooka.org).
Andamooka hosts Open Content books for reading, annotation, and

Ok so I've finally gotten around to compiling the kernel.
Just one problem I would like to try a simple test on some modules
( jfs, xfs, reiserfs ) to see which one preforms the best before I
finally decide which to use.
The problem is that these modules don't want to seem to cooperate,
patches to the kernel seem to conflict ( for xfs, I didn't even get a
patch I had to download their version of the kernel source ).
So I have to have different kernels for each patch.
Question is this, is there a way to build and install the kernel so
that it has a different name
( ie vmlinuz2.4-xfs, vmlinuz2.4-jfs, vmlinuz2.4-reiserfs ).
That way i can keep all three kernels, do my benchmarks,
and pick one when I' satisfied.
TIA

I have not done RH7.0, but I do use demand dial pppd in Mandrake 7.0 (NOT
the same thing). But I just run it from my own ppp-auto script when not
manually connected (I don't have any /etc/ppp/connect).
If demand pppd is automatically, it is likely launched during boot. See
if linuxconf (or netcfg in X) mention anything about a ppp starting
automatically during boot, and check /etc/ppp for any options files that
contain a phone number (or peers subdirectory).
The 'ps ax' command also may give a clue what is starting pppd.
BTW where did you find a free ISP for Linux? The best (freewwweb
died) and the rest (that require Windows banners) are dying or being sued
by Netzero, who just patented the banner thing in December 2000 (how they
could patent something that everybody is already doing is beyond me).

Just rename the kernel and add an entry to /etc/lilo.conf like:
image=/boot/vmlinuz2.4-jfs
label=jfs
read-only
root=/dev/hda5 (or whatever it is)
and run /sbin/lilo
Then when you restart hit [Tab} at the boot: prompt to see all the kernels
you can use. type one in and hit [Enter} and you're off and hopefully (if
you compiled it right that is) and running. :-)

Linux won't mount the CD.
Can a data CD created in Windows be read in Linux?

No, you have to burn the CD in ISO 9660 format.
If you want to read that windows data CD, you have to mount it in a
different format (I think it is ufs).
