I just meant that he was being a bit presumptuous by assuming to
know what the original poster's users should and shouldn't be
doing on the system. Obviously, there is some need for users to
be able to shut down, or the question wouldn't have been asked.

That's not helpful at all. A better answer is, "Here's how to fix it....."
and not, "You don't need that." That's the kind of answer one might
get from Microsoft. :-0

Maybe file-naming conventions on Winblows interfer?
Just save as foo.tar or foo.tar.gz (ie, short name), and it should
work...

Dear Sirs & Madams,

I have only just go X to start at all but when it does (on startup of Linux)
there is a box in the centre of screen and the locks PC locks up. I think it
is because I have created a bad XF86config file by choosing incorrect
settings in XF86Setup.

Does anyone know how to start up Linux without the automatic starting of the
X gui, considering that I cannot get into a character-mode login prompt at
all now?

Scott.

In the silicon valley typical junior sysadmin rates are
currently about 60-70K per year. Advanced sa's are
        pulling down 80-90K base.

However, those are just base salaries. I know one SA
that just retired from Netscape with a couple of million
in diversified investments. He got lucky, but he was also
smart --- he stuck with it, didn't sell off all his shares
as soon as he could, worked hard for about five years there,
and he spent quite a bit of energy learning about and
engaging in investing, tax management and financial planning.

Who knows. I might make that yet.

check the kernel source docs for info on setting up ramdisks- it's not
to hard.

I think what you should do is mount your hard disk read only, because
that is what you need to protect. If the power goes off and stuff in ram
is lost, no biggy. You'll loose current data, but the system should hold
up fine. So anything that needs r/w, put on ramdisk. Using a separate
swap partition should be ok.

You'll need to put something in your startup scripts to establish the
necessary ramdisks files on startup- i.e. copy r/o /var to r/w /var on
ramdisk.

good luck,

Jim

Slackware 7 has a startup file (/etc/rc.d/rc.modules) which will
by default load the modules if needed for the parallel port. For
reference, they are: parport parport_pc lp
So you shouldn't have to worry about the modules for /dev/lp0 support.

When you say you "can't even get a response from it", what exactly happens?
If it hangs, I would make sure the printer is OK, cable is good, and it
isn't sharing an IRQ with something else. Does the BUSY light (or whatever)
on the printer blink? Also check /var/log/messages to see if the system
logged any errors there.

Strikes me that most people in the computer industry are making their money
that way. They get stock options, and wait for them to mature. Of course,
the salary is often enough to live on (if you work hard for it), and the
stock options give you a little cash for your future.

I talked to one CISCO engineer who said that by 40 years of age, he'd retire,
as would his wife, and he'd be "comfortable" for the rest of his life.

Hey, thanks for the response. When I said that it wasn't responding, I
meant that when I did "cat file.txt > /dev/lp0" nothing happened. It
went through, didn't hang, but the printer didn't even budge.. no
lights, nothing.

I'm pretty sure the cable and printer are working, I'll double check
though.

So you're saying that "normally" I should have to do anything to get
parallel ports working? I should be able to plug it in and do "cat x >
