Never mind, found the problem.

Evidently Linux was setting my CD-RW drive to UDMA mode before it set up
SCSI emulation. Disabling UDMA for it fixed the problem.

Pages you can't view even in NS are not worth looking at. Some people might
even go as far as to say that any page you can't view in a text-browser ain't
worth it.

Hey, you found a valid excuse. Not bad.

Hi all,

I have attached a parallel zip drive to my Gateway (has only one parallel
port). In fstab, how do i add this drive? The mount point will be
/mnt/zip (already taken care of) but which dev do I need to use?

Thanks

If you are only looking for a way on outputing the IBM Extended
Characters, this is cited from "README-tech.txt" of DOSEMU:

9.1.1. IBM character set in an xterm

GREAT NEWS: You just use your existing ordinary "rxvt" or "xterm".
Just install the VGA font by going into the DOSEMU directory and
running the "xinstallvgafont" script by typing "./xinstallvgafont".
Then just run "xdosemu" to start a DOSEMU window!

9.1.2. IBM character set at the console

This will work if you are using the Linux console for telnet or
kermit, to run a remote DOSEMU session. Just simply run the
"ibmtermdos" command on the remote end. It puts the Linux console to
use the IBM font for VT100 display, so that high ASCII characters are
  directly printable.

NOTE: This will not work with "screen" or any other programs that
affect character set mapping to the Linux console screen. For this,
you should specify "charset fullibm" inside the "video { }"
  configuration in /etc/dosemu.conf.

9.1.3. IBM character set over a serial line into an IBM ANSI terminal

Simply specify "charset fullibm" inside the "video { }" configuration
in /etc/dosemu.conf and then run "dos" in the normal manner. You must
be running in an ANSI emulation mode (or a vt102 mode that is
compatible with ANSI and uses the IBM character set.)

Thanks everyone.

The -T option did what I wanted.

I started using include files for accounting purposes
and have stuck with it. You can run word counts
on the number of files you told it to archive.
And then run a word count on what it did in fact
archive. Then, you have a nice searchable text
file (with grep) in case you are wondering in which
one of dozens of tar files a particular archived
file is. Very fast.

/usr/doc/xmms-1.2.4/README is pretty informative.

For web radio, try clicking PL to get the playlist window, then
click the "+ FILE" box, from which a "+ URL" choice will pop.
Click that, and then add something like http://205.188.245.132:8036
to it...

IIRC, automount, or something to that effect is checking
every second to see if it needs to mount or unmount a CDROM.
Disabling that feature (and thereby going back to manually
mounting and unmounting) should get rid of your excessive
log entries.

Assuming you have a new(er) Zip drive, make sure the Zip drive is
connected, turned on and (optional but a good idea) with a Zip disk in
the drive, then as root run the command

modprobe imm

The output will show the device if this works. If not, see

That's free as in 'free speech', not as in 'free beer'.

It's reasonable to pay for any service someone provides to you. Including
helping you upgrade your kernel. The fact that people are willing to help
you for free sometimes does not give you the right to demand that they do
so whenever you want them to.

All the information you need to compile your kernel is right there in the
source tree. If you need an additional document to help you understand it,
hire an expert to write the document for you[1]. You can then release the
document under a free license: that can be your contribution to free
software.

[1] I am not being sarcastic, either. If you don't understand, go to
    www.gnu.org and read some philosophy.

When i start Linux I get an image that's far too big for my screen, that is I

called in Linux). Does anybody know what the problem is, and especially how I
solve it?

Please help as Ive been looking forward to finally try out Linux

I sort-of figured that out, but it does not seem to help. I went to
/etc/rc.d/init.d and did /sbin/chkconfig autofs off, and it did, in
fact, turn everyting off in the rc?.d directories. I then did ./autofs
off and it turned off the daemon. But it makes no difference. I even
rebooted, just in case, and that did not help either.

I actually prefer to mount and dismount stuff like floppies and CD-ROMs.

the db2sysc are some IBM DB2 dbms server daemons. I must be overlooking
something. Anything obvious?

Most of this is related to GNOME/Enlightenment. I do not remember
magicdev before, and cannot find it in the /etc/rc.d/init.d scripts.
Could that be it?

Subject: No space left on device for /var filesystem

For some strange reason I cannot write to /var anymore.
It complains that "No space left on device". However,
there is plenty of free space left on the device .
According to df, it says that there is 800Megs free.

I am running Redhat 6.1.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Vendor Neutral Linux Certifications, or, LPI vs. SAIR
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 00:00:46 GMT

I'm interested in learning Linux from a professional perspective. I
have taken an intro course and have been using Linux for over a year
now. I've installed many distributions and have learned a lot. But,
there are gaps. I want to get certified with either LPI's offering or
SAIR's offering to both (a) give myself a structured study goal and
(b) obtain a well rounded and respected vendor-neutral Linux
certification. I'm going to do this self-study, using various
distributions and several PC's including a Sparc workstation.

My question is, which is better or has the better future? SAIR seems
more academic and thorough, but focuses on multiple distributions
(which you can argue is both good and bad). LPI seems to be more well
known at this time, and is supposedly distro neutral, but it doesn't
seem to cover as much ground and detail as SAIR's cert. LPI seems to
get more press, but there seems to be this tone that SAIR isn't going
away and will compete quite heavily with LPI.

Does anyone have an experience with which they think is better or is
about to "Take off" ?

Bruce

The story I read said that the worm checked to see if the OS was
RedHat and that it didn't exploit non-RedHat systems.
