Found the xawtv page, got that installed on my machine, but now I have
to deal with bttv. Unfortunately I find that I need a new kernel. Mind
is 2.2.12-20 which I know is stable. But I told that I need at least
2.3.xxx which I gather will be unstable - so I don't want to put that on
my system (even if I could).
Is it possible someone could give me a step-by-step guide on how to get
bttv on to my computer. I'm reading the Kernel HOW-TO , but it's filling
me with a great amount of foreboding.
I apologise for being one of the new type of people to Linux (those
with little experience of the very inner workings of a computer).
Thanks
Duncan

I'm setting up some basic firewalling rules on my SuSE 6.2 (kernel
2.2.14) box. However, when going through the system configuration in
Yast I discovered a bunch of FW_* variables. Could someone please
explain what they are since the descriptions seem to be absent. I know
they pertain to firewalling but I don't know what values to put in them.
I'm running a very small network using the 192.168.1.x IP range. The
Linux box is the gateway to the Internet via ppp, and my Mac is
networked through eth0.
Also, is it possible to log any from the firewall to somewhere other
than /var/log/messages? Say, /var/log/firewall?
Thanks,
Jim
PS Go easy on me, I'm new at this!

Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 13:17:55 GMT
when debugging a printing problem (user cannot lprm) I ran into basic
troubles in understanding setuid-root. I couldnt clear my mind in man
chmod.
assume a file like:
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root users 95 Apr 2 15:00 testscript
what does it exactely mean ?
when ANY user execute this file it is run as root ?
or:
only a user = root or a user in users can start it so that it run as root
and other users can only run it 'normally' ?
in the first case, which makes more sense to me, why is there a per-user-
setuid and a a pergroup-setuid ?
anyway : on my system neither the first nor the second seems to work.
testscript should delete a file that is owned by root (just for
testingpurpose only !!)
#!/bin/bash
rm -f /tmp/test
where
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 95 Apr 2 15:00 test
I run this script as root and the file gets deleted. I run the file as
user (groupmembership users or not) and I get a permission-error !
Is it possible that setuid is permitted on my system (its based on
redhat5.2 but with new kernel)
thanks,
peter

Yes.

Security reasons, basically. If you have this:
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root uucp /usr/bin/crud
-rw-rw---- 1 root uucp /dev/ttyS0
then the SGID bit on the program allows it to be owned by root and run as
group "uucp", so the program can directly access the serial port without
having full root privileges.

SUID shell scripts are not allowed. Ever. Too many security holes.

There is no user called "help" on this machine. If you are referring to =

This is not April Fools at all.
The fact is that W2K is not an upgrade for Win9X - it is a switch to NT.
And the general public neither wants nor needs NT. They should, instead, be
"upgrading" to Windows Millenium. See the text below.
It is also the case, as you say, that there is no anti-virus out there yet
(though, I'm sure, McAfee is working on it as we speak). One of the
interesting attributes of W2K is that, unlike previous MS offerings, it
cannot be uninstalled (It warns you of this fact in one of the early
installation screens).
The following text ought to be read and understood by one and all before
coming anywhere near W2K:
=====Original Message=====
RAK> OK... call me clueless... what is "Windows Millennium"???
For nigh on 3/4 of a decade now, Microsoft has had two strands of
"Windows": the Windows that sits on top of the DOS operating system and
the Windows that does not. Up until recently, the Windows that sits on
top of DOS has been named after the year -- a clever marketing tactic
aimed at persuading people to upgrade every couple of years and subtly
pushing them ever closer to the "yearly rental" purchasing model that
the "Halloween Documents" discuss -- and the Windows that does not use
DOS has been given an alphabetical name and a version number. Hence we
have had DOS+Windows 95, DOS+Windows 98, Windows NT 3.5, and Windows NT 4.
With the new releases of both types of Windows, Microsoft has now
switched things around. The Windows that does not use DOS is now named
after the year, whereas the Windows that sits on top of DOS now has an
alphabetical name. Hence "Windows 2000" is in fact the successor to
Windows NT 4, and "Windows Millennium" is the DOS-based successor to
DOS+Windows 98.
I've read hypotheses that the idea behind this is simple "bait and
switch": Since DOS+Windows Millennium is being downplayed, to the
extent that most people (such as yourself) don't even know that there
will be a new version of DOS+Windows, the idea that Microsoft Marketing
has is that people using (DOS+)"Windows 98" will see "Windows 2000" as
being its natural successor, simply because it is "the next version of
Windows with a year number", and switch over to using the non-DOS-based
Windows without realising it.
Incidentally, there is a noticable trend amongst existing Windows NT
users of calling Windows 2000 "Windows NT 2000".

Ok. I've used the suggestion of just clicking the "OK" button and getting
on with things. It does fine dialing in to my ISP. However, when it comes
times to startup pppd, the daemon starts (i can see it in the process
table), but no connection appears to be made. I turned on debugging and
see the an error about modprobe not able to locate the "char-major-108"
module.
in my /var/log/ppp file:
Apr 2 00:07:47 localhost modprobe: can't locate modules char-major-108
Apr 2 00:07:47 localhost pppd[600]: pppd 2.3.10 started by chris
Apr 2 00:09:47 localhost pppd[600]: terminating on signal 15
Apr 2 00:09:47 localhost pppd[600]: Exit.
Perhaps an interesting note is that the ppp.o and slhc.o modules report
"unresolved symbols" when loading them. I ran depmod on them and found
that the unresolved symbols appear to be kmalloc, kfree, and some other
allocations routines. I don't understand why this is happening.
thanks,
chris

get a bigger hard drive and put all your files onto the big one then
experiment with linux on the little one. try the install and if it says
anything about something valled LILO or anything about dual-booting then go
ahead as planned. 6.4GB should only cost you anywhere between $100 and $200

No you don't; the bttv driver definetely works for me on kernel
2.2.14. I'm using xawtv version 3.07, and don't have any problems with
it. The only thing is that the teletext driver (saa5249 or something)
needs me to put the parameter '-oldbttv' before it works. Big deal.

Summary of the Kernel-HOWTO:
Delete the symlink /usr/src/linux (man rm); then untar
linux-2.2.14.tar.bz2 into /usr/src (man bunzip2; man tar); this will
create /usr/src/linux-2.2.14 - if not, rename (man mv). Then make a
symlink so that /usr/src/linux points to /usr/src/linux-2.2.14 (man
ln). Copy the old .config file (/usr/src/linux-old/.config) into
/usr/src/linux (man cp), then run 'make menuconfig' from
/usr/src/linux.
Then:
make clean && make dep && make bzImage && make modules
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14
Then change /etc/lilo.conf appropriately (man lilo.conf)
/sbin/lilo (man lilo)
It's not at all dangerous as long as you leave an option in lilo.conf
to boot your old kernel in case something goes wrong.
It's not as complicated as it looks - the whole process takes me about
10 minutes (2 minutes configuration, 6 minutes compile, 2 minutes
lilo.conf and boot).
