Have you tried any of the net-based apps, which you can use from any web
browser? There are reviews of them on ZDnet, Cnet, etc.

Do you truly mean "Virtual Private Network", or are you trying to dial
into a private modem bank that uses SecureID for authentication?

I suspect the latter, and if so, it's not a problem, I do it regularly.

I set up kppp to use terminal authentication, and when it asks for my
password, I type in my PIN, and the current number on my SecureID card.
No problem at all.

Get the pcmcia-cs package (http://pcmcia.sourceforge.net/ if nowhere
else), untar it, ./configure && make && make install . The PCMCIA
support built in to the 2.2.x (and even the 2.4.x, last time I checked)
kernels doesn't work very well if at all. The modules work much better.

I don't know how much benefit you'll derive from 2.2.17. If all your
hardware was supported in 2.2.12, most likely you won't notice any
improvement anywhere. 2.4.x *may* run a bit faster for you, but it's
still in heavy development and pieces tend to break unpredictably in my
experience (especially on laptops.) Also, I thought all those i-series
ThinkPads had Lucent Losemodems built in; the binary-only driver for
those things will *NOT* work if the kernel version is > 2.2.15.

Not enough info! Try the following steps, in order:

0. Open a mixer program and make sure the master and CD volume controls
are set at a reasonable level.
1. Run "sndconfig" as root if the mixer program complains that the
mixer device isn't present; this means your sound card hasn't had the
correct driver loaded.
2. http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.html
3. Post the exact make and model of your sound card. "Soundblaster
compatible" is not a valid response; we're looking for something like
"Crystal CS4236" or "Ensoniq ES1371". If the soundcard is PCI, run cat
/proc/pci and post the lines from that which concern the sound card.
Once you've done that, someone will most likely be able to tell you
exactly what to do to activate your soundcard.

Hi. I'm actually making a backup, of both my old (dos and win95) an new
(linux) hd.

Now I've got the problem that on the dos/win hd are a lot of files that
have a name like FILENA~1.HTM (that's their real name, becuse it were
once windows filenames wich I later copied with dos... Stupid.)
The problem is that I have a dir with all these files, but gcombust sais
"ignoring ... <filenames>" and cdrecord (wich gcombust is just a
frond-ent to) does too. I don't want all these files tarred in one big
backupfile, I Just wann'em plain, damn'it!

How do I do that?

Subject: no space for semaphores
Date: 13 Oct 2000 23:56:48 GMT

We've been running a mailserver for a while now (230 days) and an a/v application I am
trying to run dies with:
Cannot acquire the semaphore(semget return -1): No space left on device
There is lots of disk space and lots of swap space.
I presume the app has ENOSPC back from semget().
Where are semaphores allocated and how can I get space back ?
I don't really want to reboot, which would no doubt fix the problem.
I kill the a/v program regularly to load new databases (just plain killall, no -KILL)
so
I guess it might slowly chew its way through the allocation.

Anyone know anything about this ?

The industry standards and real OS's were around long before DOS for
OC's. IBM had a couple and UNIX was around.

Random guess. You have a Gateway PC. You have an Ensoniq AudioPCI es1371
soundcard. You have Boston Acoustics Media Theatre speakers. If so, try
plugging your speakers into your sound card with the analog lead rather
than your digial lead. Linux doesn't support digital output. This helped
someone else once, including me. Perhaps it wil help you. :-)

Cheers,
