Subject: /dev file permission keep changing
Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 01:26:36 GMT
When I'm logged into my Mandrake 6.0/ KDE 1.1 desktop the file permissions of
/dev/dsp /dev/audio and /dev/mixer get changed after someone else does a
<ctrl>+<alt>+<F2>, leaving me logged in and then the second person logs in.
The second person then starts KDE.
Here is whats happening. While still logged in as myself, I logged
in as another user and started KDE. The first listing is before the logon,
the second listing is after KDE starts and the third listing is after the
user logs out.
#Single user
[root@case /dev]# ls -l dsp audio mixer
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 14, 4 Apr 17 1999 audio
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 14, 3 Apr 17 1999 dsp
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 14, 0 Apr 17 1999 mixer
#Second user, KDE started.
[root@case /dev]# ls -l dsp audio mixer
crw-rw---- 1 chris audio 14, 4 Apr 17 1999 audio
crw-rw---- 1 chris audio 14, 3 Apr 17 1999 dsp
crw-rw---- 1 chris audio 14, 0 Apr 17 1999 mixer
#Second user has logged out.
[root@case /dev]# ls -l dsp audio mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 Apr 17 1999 audio
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Apr 17 1999 dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 0 Apr 17 1999 mixer
After this, the first user (ME :) can't use tha audio until I manually
change the permission back.
Anyone know whats changing the permissions and how can I make it stop?

Make suer you have user id & password in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
Try this option
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 debug user XXX connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v ''
AT OK ATD5555555 CONNECT '\d\c'"
For this is working.

Well, what's the sender domain? It looks to me like it's
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" This is not valid, of course. First, don't send
mail as root. Second, you can either set sendmail to masquerade a
valid domain or you can hack the sendmail.cf file and put in a domain
manually.

If so, it was a damned good TV series. (It was on about 15 years ago, and it
really stuck in my memory).

I think the Psion Organiser deserves a mention in there somewhere.

You've got your VLANs wired wrong. Traffic is spilling over directly
from the devices requesting addresses without going through the router,
and is being relayed by the router as well. I'd suggest rechecking the
VLAN configurations.

Contrary to what you might think, you are either NOT in the correct
directory (/usr/src/linux) or you haven't extracted your kernel archive
properly--you did do this, right? The kernel archive should be
extracted from /usr/src. Make sure there is no existing linux directory
there, if there is move it or rename it. When you extract the kernel
archive it will create /usr/src/linux and some additional
sub-directories. Run make from that directory.

Subject: Re: newbie question

Just to update everyone on what is going on. I tried most everything that
everyone
suggested. I started out by going into linuxconf. I set up the eth0 adapter
using the dhcp option and specified tulip as the module. This added a line
to the conf.modules file in /etc automatically. I then tried ifconfig, but
nothing
came up. When I am in the control-panel the eth0 shows up but it is
inactive.
When
I try to activate it , it just tried to obtain an ip address for a while,
during
which
time if you type "ifconfig" the card shows up. But then it gives up
"Operation
failed"
and the card is no longer seen if you type ifconfig.
Now I am not too sure what is going on. I tried to compile the driver that I
got with the card, but I suspect that it was designed for an earlier kernel.
At any rate it fails giving me various errors about arguments not being the
correct number. I had a look at the code, but could not decipher anything.
Something to do with pointers. So that was a no go.
I am willing to take suggestions here. Do you folks think that the card is
being
recognized or that the driver is the right one, after all the card does show
up in the control panel ? Or is it a problem with the DHCP. Incidentally,
as you may have gathered from the previous postings, this is a strange case,
because the tech who set up the service, used DHCP in windows , but
when I contacted @Home , they gave me an IP, gateway add, dns numbers
etc. So I am not completely sure if I should DHCP or static. I have tried
the
static settings to no avail too. Incidentally the DHCP works under windows.
So I am wondering should I throw the noname card out the window and buy
something more conventional ? Your ideas, suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks
A.

There are utility programs for this purpose. Our company
wrote/sells a product called PEEK. This software lets you
see what someone is doing, and also lets you type on behalf
of the user. It's used for remote support, demos, training,
etc. For details send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Skipping boot scripts !!!
Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 02:13:48 GMT
Hi,
I completely scraped my box when upgrading from debian slink to potato.
For information, I'm running Linux 2.2.14 on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite
2180 CDT) and have problems with the PCMCIA drivers.
But : I can't boot since the PCMCIA initialisation script is run at boot
time.
So my question is :
Is there a way to disable the execution of init.d scripts at boot time ?
or at list stop it ...
Please help, I'm completely stuck with this ...
Thanks in advance.
