Subject: Help!!!! Added second nic card, now neither work...
Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 23:58:46 GMT

I installed a linksys card into my rh6.1 system as a secondary nic card and
the linksys card fails to load at bootup of redhat. The new nic should be
eth1and the old nic which was already in there and working fine for months is
eth0. Now that I installed the second nic card (eth1) not only does eth1 not
work, but neither does eth0

I ran nmap locally on my ipaddress and it says: 'SIOCGIFCONF claims you have
no network interfaces!'

I tried editing conf.modules and tried running linuxconf to fix it but both
have failed to bring up either interface while both nics are installed. I can
always remove the second nic and get eth0 back just fine, but that's not what
I want. I want both working.

/etc/config.modules:
  alias eth0 ne
  options ne io=0x240, irq=5

  alias eth1 ne
  options ne i0=0xe000, irq=11

Attempted to append statments to /etc/lilo.conf. I've tried each of these with
no success:
 append="ether=0x240, 5, eth0"
 append=.ether=0e000,11, eth1
 append="ether=0e000,11, eth1"

The above have syntax errors, I don't know the correct syntax to make lilo
stop saying syntax errors in these lines. Any idea what the correct syntax is?

Also ran netcfg to try to activate the interfaces. Netcfg shows a status
of active when I click on the activate button but I still cannot access
neither interface (it shows disabled when I first startup netcfg). As soon as
I exit netcfg and come back into netcfg the settings are back at disabled. No
way to make them stay active, and yes I tried saving.

Since the two cards work fine under windows I know it must be a configuration
error under my linux settings -- I just don't know what to check and what to
change.

I haven't tried installing the linux driver that was on the linksys diskette
because it required rebuilding the kernel with what looked like a driver for
an older kernel version. No desire to crash my entire system because of adding
an error to the kernel.

Besides rebuilding the kernel, I'm out of ideas at this point. Can you help?

Thanks!

Andre'
p.s. This is a dual boot pc running win95 and rh6.1. eth1 is connected to my
networked pc and eth0 is connected to my dsl modem. When I boot to win95 both
nics work fine. Under linux neither eth card works when both nics are in at
the same time.

Already tried editing:
- linuxconf
- conf.modules
- lilo.conf

Approach any of the linux sites say, www.linux.org The newest version of
RedHat Linux (arguably the most poppular distribution) can be had at
www.redhat.com (if you have the bandwidth) P.S. - If you are posting this
from India, approach PC Quest or Chip Mags.

Subject: Re: Win4Lin
Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 19:40:33 -0500

I am very impressed. I installed it on the 6th, and haven't rebooted
into Windows since then. I've also used it to access some Windows
applications that I like to use in developing websites.

The first thing I have discovered is that running win4lin (I'm using
Windows 98) is MORE stable that running Windows 98 natively.

The main Windows applications I use are HoTMetaL Pro 6.0, Ulead 5.0
(it's graphics optimizer is the best IMHO), Adobe Acrobat 4.05, Office
97 to see files that customers send to me exactly as they were sent, and
of course MSIE to test how my pages look.

I have verified that it works well by creating a 70 page web site and
publishing it totally under win4lin, and putting some finishing touches
on another site of about 30 pages.

The main advantage to me is that when putting in the hooks in the web
pages to the database (I use PHP as a module to access the PostgreSQL
database), I can run emacs with however many files I want open on the
remote site and have telnet windows open to various places in the remote
site's filesystem and open directly on the database, without having to
worry about Windows crashing and losing all those sessions, since they
are running in Linux and it I cannot remember the last time

But here is the funny thing...Windows ain't crashing hardly at all. In
large part, it is because win4lin allows Linux to handle the networking.

I would still have to reboot into windows if I wanted sound, access to
my com ports or to use a scsi scanner. However, I don't use my com
ports, I could care less about sound (only a couple of web sites that I
work on have that).

On my system I had Windows installed on /dev/hda1, /dev/hda6 and
/dev/hda7.

Win4lin works by installing windows into a win directory for each user,
$HOME/win (aka ~/win).

That becomes drive C:\.

The thing that caused me the most trouble was accessing my two dos
partitions, /dev/hda6 and /dev/hda7.

What was not clear to me was that to mount or ''attach'' those under
win4lin, they should NOT be mounted as a part of the Linux filesystem.
After unmounting them as root, I was and have been able to easily access
them as drives D and E.

The other negatives I have enountered are that I had to install the
HoTMetaL Pro 6.0 sitemaker DB in a different directory than the default
to have it work, and one of the button in ULead 6.0 is a little sticky.

However, the boost in my productivity from not having Windows crashing
all the time when I'm working on an important and time constrained
project totally wipes out these negatives and leaves the positive column
with a huge stack and some!!

But when it boots, the following messages appear:

Checking

Mounting local filesystems mount: fs type devpts not supported by

(This fs type devpts message appears again after Initializing random

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_always_defrag is missing -- cannot control IP

I have not had success finding what these messages mean. Please if
anyone can help, I'd appreciate it! I've read that it's possible to get
this build to run okay...

Subject: Red Hat Linux 6.0 UMP/Netscape plugin -- no sound

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings!

I've installed UMP (Unix MIDI Player) in my Linux (Red Hat 6.0)
Netscape. I believe I do have it installed. But, I don't hear any
sound (even when I run Netscape as root).

Now, I didn't say anything about this for the past couple/few weeks,
because my sound system was suspect. (I only about a week ago got my
sound system working. I paid $30 to OSS for the license and latest
drivers for my SoundBlaster AWE64. I paid for and installed the MIDI
stuff as well as the basic drivers for Linux.)

MIDI does work, and it works VERY well! It sounds great, in fact!
I, for example, execute:

/usr/lib/oss/mplay 1 cavatina.mid

     ...and it sounds terrific!

Now, when I first installed UMP, I got all kinds of error messages.
(Sometimes, it was the /dev/dsp wasn't available. Sometimes it was all
kinds of dialog boxes with errors. I ruled these up to my sound system,
and I believe it was.) Now, when I access pages that (supposedly) play
MIDI clips, I don't get any errors at all, but I get absolutely nothing
else, either (no errors but no sound, either).

One page, for example, I've attempted it with is:

http://pubweb.bnl.gov/people/hoff/

This page starts off with "No longer do UNIX users need to hide their
heads in shame while their PC and MAC counterparts enjoy embedded MIDI
sound at their favorite websites." :-) (Which IS, I'll have to admit, part
of my motivation!) :-D

I access the "test page" at this URL, and it sends me to:

http://pubweb.bnl.gov/people/hoff/midiSamplePage.html

...and I see the UMP "logo" in the upper left corner (with a treble
cleff and a plug). I see "click here for led zeppelin" and click it. I
then see "X% of 50K" in the lower part of Netscape, and it finishes pretty
quickly. But, I hear nothing.

I've accessed a couple other pages, as well, that I at least suspect
plays MIDI music. (I used to get the dialog boxes of errors. Now, I get
nothing.) For example, single player Wheel of Fortune at this URL, when
actually playing the game:

http://www.station.sony.com/wheel/

Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to what the problem may be now?
I've even set the POSIXLY_CORRECT environment variable recommended on the
hoff URL page! :-) What advice do you offer?

     Thank you!

     Barry

Hi

I would like to prune my /dev directory of anything I don't need.
Unfortunally for most files in that directory I have no idea what
they are for. I know that these files represent devises and that hda
represents my first harddrive, therefore I can guess the meaning of
hdb but for the others I am without a clue. None of the linux books I
have mentione the files in the /dev directory other than hda(x). I was
wondering if someone knows a website that describes these files so
that learn there meaning.

Hi, I would probably use tar myself, but isn't that's what the "-dpR"
options in GNU cp are for?

They have a lot of good stuff for NTFS.

You have to upgrade to kernel 2.2.14 and apply an ATA66 Patch.

I forgot where to get the patch but someone will remember...

I'd strongly recommend leaving /dev alone. You not going to gain much
deleting anything there. Those files are mostly special files for
accessing hardware. (i.e., /dev/hda is your first harddrive). If you
delete the wrong file, you could be in for a lot of grief.
