Deja Vu? Didn't I just read this message with a different header?
Well, you probably won't get an answer unless you give enough information
with your problem description.

You might start with which distribution, and how your NIC was set up
originally. And then, go into what you added to your kernel configuration.
Let us know exactly what messages show up on the screen when you boot, and
what errors are being logged in /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, etc.

Without that kind of info, any suggestions would have to be very general,
(like "RTFM") or pure guesses. There are lots of folks willing to help,
including me.

The Brooktree line of cards have some good drivers. They're also the
cheapest video capture card, and probably the most popular. Check the
package of the cheapest capture cards, and see if they have a Brooktree
chipset. Viewing quality is great in X or on a frame-buffer console. Capture
isn't quite there yet (not in mine anyway) but it's getting better...

The error messages may be due to not finding the links to the files. You
can do the following to fix the links.

cd /usr/include

   rm -rf asm linux scsi

One can download gzip's source from the FSF and compile it on any flavor
of UNIX. GZip is effectively available for any flavor of UNIX. There
is ALSO a version of both tar and GZip for MacOS. MS-Windows' WinZip
understands .tar.gz files as well.

Check out http://penguin.lvcm.com/ click on "Video Capture" in the
sidebar. There is a family of chipsets from Brooktree (Bttv this and
that) that are used in a lot of video tuner cards (including my own
STB TV card), and well supported under linux. If you know how to rebuild
a kernel, when doing a "make config" or better, a "make menuconfig" or
"make xconfig", there is a section in the build devoted to TV cards.

On my Linux box, I get that same error whenever I start X, but I concluded
that it was due to the fact that the pc is a 486sx with 16 mb of ram. X is
still useable for me once I cancel out of the box, but I probably won't use
X on that pc for much anyway, so I have ignored it. Perhaps your issue is
also related to how slow the pc is?

Edit /etc/XF86Config
Search for the lines that contains the word "Virtual"
Put a # before them all.

> 2) what does xvidtune do and how can i run it?

It allows you to fine tune the X server for your moniter by pressing buttons
that move the picture up/down/left/right and increase/decrease the size of
the picture horizontally/vertically.

Then the picture is centred and the right size, you hit another button, and
it outputs a modeline to standard out that you can cut and paste into the
/etc/XF86Config file in the correct place.

> 3) when running XF86Setup how do i apply the changes or does it do it
> automitically?

If you continually have trouble with XF86Setup, go primative.
Use xf86config. This is text only, asks a string of questions and is usually
MUCH more reliable than Setup. It's just underrated 'cos it's not pretty.

> 4) how can 'virtual' help me?

Virtual desktops are usefull because X has the ability to switch resolutions
on the fly. At the highest res, it might take up the full screen, but
hitting CTRL ALT +/- cycles through the resolutions and without a virtual
desktop scheme, most of the desktop would be inaccessable at lower
resolutions. (Usefull if you find a web page with VERRRRY small text for
example).

> 5) are there any linux commands that would be helpful?

yes.
xf86config.

I have an old PPro 200 machine and I recently installed a 20Gb HD. The
motherboard controller is old and only supported 8Gb so I purchased an SIIG
ATA-100 controller and now I can access all 20Gb. All the store sold was
ATA-100 controllers. The machine dual boots with Win98 and Win98 has no
issues.

The distribution is Mandrake 7.1

The error message given during boot is.
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:06

At boot time if I press F1 during the controller bios boot-up the controller
apparently does something that enables Linux to boot but the HD is dragged
down to 1980's IDE speed, 1.9MB per second. This exact same IDE HD in
another machine with a motherboard UDMA 33 controller (Intel) gets 20MB per
second using the hdparm test (-t).

Any ideas.

I want to thank you for your patience.
I went back and examined my kernel files.
My problem came from the way I copied
my unpacked files to linux-2.2.14.

Seems I copied each unpacked directory
except for 'net'. I had some good stuff in the
old 'net' directory, so I put off copying the rest
of the new 'net'. (Don't ask me why I did
something so dumb.) So naturally, xconfig
wasn't finding Config.in in the old 'net' directory.
It was still in the new but unmoved 'net' directroy.

Again thank you for your patience (/embarassed).

I have an SMP SuperMicro DM3 board with SlackWare 7.1 (Linux-2.2.16)
installed.
The documentation says there is an AC97 Codec installed and the BIOS
says it is enabled.
I can modprobe the AC97_codec.o module and it seems to install (no
responses). lsmod shows it installed but not used.
None of Gnome, KDE, or FVWM are able to make any sound come out of the
speakers.
The only time a sound comes out is when the power is turned on.
A continuing series of messages saying "/dev/dsp not found or you may
not have permission".
I am root so this should not be a problem (checked permissions and I
have crw_rw_rw_).

This is the only thing left for a completely running system (except
playing with the RW CD a little more).
Anyone think where I should look next:

Thanks to all for the suggestions. As it turns out, my erase starts
