The usual method is to use the "l" flag. Stay on "local" file system.

     tar cplvfC - / . | tar xplvfC - /new-disk

I am currently researching Linux-based e-mail servers. I have found many
'standard' mail servers (SMTP/POP3) but there seems to be a lack of
packages that offer features similar to MS Exchange (calandering, task
lists, etc.). Is there anything out there that can do e-mail as well as
scheduling, etc.?

Tux,

I hope this would solve your problem...At the linux LILO prompt keyin
'linux single'. This will start your linux on a single user mode, you
will now get a root shell access.
Through this access you can gain access to the file /etc/shadow. Edit the
file /etc/shadow using vi editor. Delete from the second field of the
root id (those set of characters stands for your encyrpted password)..
The field is similar to the one below.

root:Ai745$djf:11062:0:999999:7

1)Delete all the set of characters from the second field ( next to the
'root:'). Save then exit the shadow file.
2) then type the command 'password' from the bash..
3) you will be now asked for a new password.
4) key in your password
5) you now have the new password for your linux....

I've used it just fine for getting the kernel to recognize both of my
ethernet cards when I boot up, with the drivers compiled into the kernel.
You shouldn't see the append, but it should still work. I don't think that
the append in LILO will work for modules.

Then you must be running a rather crappy version of gnulinux as mine
(debian) demands the root passwd before giving you a root shell,
otherwise it continues up the runlevels normally.

However, I was not saying that a linux system or any other system is
totally secure in itself. The whole point of a data center is to process
data, most of this data comes from clerks doing data entry (although
there are exceptions). Linux systems would make excellent
desktops/workstations for such clerks for all of the reasons mentioned
before. Such centers are huge, with hundreds of people working 24-7,
with unpleasant armed guards and cameras.

In such an environment you are always being watched.

Rebooting would be noticed*, pulling out a bootdisk would be noticed
(Few of these places even allow bookbags, purses or any personal
possessions to be taken to the workstations anyway). Anyone attempting
shenannigans would be grabbed, fired, and out the door long before they
could do anything "cool".

*Either by a human or by network management software.

Hi Mattew,

Try: "man 1 cp" or for those who aren't running Linux or Slackware users
who forgot to install groff ;-) try some online man pages:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=cp&sektion=1&manpath=Linux&format=html

   OPTIONS
       -a, --archive
Preserve as much as possible of the structure and
attributes of the original files in the copy. The
              same as -dpR.

So what you meant to say was yes, cp -dpR will work :-)

Try setting up your sound card with sndconfig before you set up
your modem (that used to be a bug in sndconfig - not sure if it's
still true)
Get a sequencer app like jazz++ (www.jazzware.com) ...
it has a menu item for setting up midi devices.

Hi
Theres quite a bit about this on the web, I ran into this prob and just
turned off the ide drives in the bios. Linux boots from the scsi drive and
still finds the ide drives ok. You can modify Lilo to get round this prob by
tellin it where to boot from. I have some txt files on it if you are
interested. I could email to you, let me know.

tar --help will list all the switches and brief explanations of them

but specifically for your problem you would use (usually):

tar xvf apsfilter.tar

x - extract
v - be verbose about what it's doing
f - use this file as the source (apsfiler.tar in this case)

I recommend you learn tar well, you'll be using it a *lot*.
