There's a '.inf' file for W95 which supposedly provides the "driver" you
need for windoze to allow it to do dialup networking outbound through
a direct-connect serial port. I did not write it, I have not personally
tried it (don't need it now, have a real network at home now), and I
neither claim nor accept any liability for it, no matter how well or
badly it behaves.
Save it to a file named "mdmcisco.inf".
The instructions with it say:
Copy it to c:\windows\inf directory (a hidden directory, but you
can CD to it), and it will show up in control panel as an
available modem. OR, install a new modem and say "have" disk
and point it at this file. ftp://ftp.nook.net/pub/mdmcisco.inf
After you have it, install "generic null modem" and you are all
set.
It goes on to say that you'll be prompted for a phone number when you set
up a dialout using this "modem", but obviously it doesn't use it, so
it apparently doesn't matter what you give it.
It also says that you'll need to set up PAP authentication on your incoming
Linux box, since that's what Windoze uses.
here's the script:

Nope, the reason seems to be the permissions on your mount point.

Exactly. A directory needs "x" (execute) permission to be able to 'cd'
into it.

They have - they just can't 'cd' there. A 'cp /dzip/foo ~/bar',
'cp ~/foo /dzip/bar' or 'touch /dzip/foo_bar' should work fine,
though.

Try copying the files from a command prompt instead. See the manual page
for 'cp' ("man cp").

Well, didn't have much success the first time I asked, so ... I try again. If
it's not possible please tell, I won't shoot myself. Well ... how could you
live if there are things that Windows can do and Linux can't ?
Here's the question : I'm using Linux (SuSE 6.3), and I have a modem that can
receive fax while the computer is off. I'd like to know if there's a way to
get the fax messages from the modem memory afterwards.

I've downloaded jdk 1.1.7 -glibc version- from blackdown site, and set JAVA_HOME
path to the correct jdk path, i.e.,:
JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk117_v1a #Here I decompressed the archive -> /opt
and appended the PATH:

and set CLASSPATH, so it became:
CLASSPATH=.:$JAVA_HOME/lib/classes.zip
I can saw all of that when I type env in the console. So I did it correctly.
But when I tried to compile a small java program which prints "Hello World!" -I know
how to program in java, but my problem is with jdk setup- on
the screen I face this error message -copied from the console, as it was-:
=====================
[root@localhost tmp]# javac helo.java

Even if I tried to run appletviewer from the console, I face this message:

They have, but in order to be able to 'cd' to your ZIP, you also need
the 'x' right. You can copy straight from the zip, but you just can't
change directory to it.
A directory needs at least 'x' to be able to cd to it. The 'r' is only
for reading files from it.

Technically these are not environment variables, but rather

Well, the do! If it shows up with "echo $PS2" it will
also show up with "printenv PS2".

That might not work, because it does not show all environment
and shell variables. It only shows variables that have been
exported. PS2 might not be! There isn't necessarily any reason
to export it, as it is normally reset in every invocation of the
shell anyway... except perhaps for non-interactive shells. That
brings up the possibility that Helen might have done "echo $PS2"
from the command line, but may have done "printenv PS2" from a
shell script, which are two very different things.
