Iam having problems with the access restriction
configured in the
httpd.conf of apache.
If anyone would be so keen to edit the text
below, so that it works,
or writes how it would work, i would be very
happy.
"OurGroup", "UserGroup?" are pseudonyms fo the
IPs.
There are 3 directories:
users #all three groups need access
user1 #subdir of users; "UserGroup1"
and "OurGroup" need access
user2 #subdir of users; "UserGroup2"
and "OurGroup" need access
The way I did understandd it, it would look like
this:
(part of httpd.conf)
##################################################
<Directory />
AuthUserFile /etc/httpd/passwd
AuthGroupFile /etc/httpd/group
Options -FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
#
# Note that from this point forward you must
specifically allow
# particular features to be enabled - so if
something's not working as
# you might expect, make sure that you have
specifically enabled it
# below.
#
#
# This should be changed to whatever you set
DocumentRoot to.
#
<Directory /usr/local/httpd/htdocs>
Options Indexes -FollowSymLinks +Includes
MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
Allow from "OurGroup"

Try the "recover" utility, should be on every major linux site...
or do a search on http://www.freshmeat.org
The utility will try everything possible to recover the files, if it can't
they're probably lost forever.

Problems are not expected, but I assume you will be able to contact me
from another PC in case of trouble.
To correct the partition tables, repair the FAT32 backup boot sectors,
and recover the 5506 MB Linux partition as second primary partition,
you can do (wilson1.bat):
findpart getsect 1 0 1 1 1 boot0 noheader
findpart getsect 1 0 1 7 1 back0 noheader
findpart getsect 1 1275 1 1 1 boot1275 noheader
findpart getsect 1 1275 1 7 1 back1275 noheader
set findpart=edit
findpart 1 0 1 * 0B 0 1 1 572 254 63 0 2482 255 63 26
findpart 1 0 2 - 83 573 0 1 1274 254 63 0 2482 255 63 26
findpart 1 0 3 - 0F 1275 0 1 2481 254 63 0 2482 255 63 26
findpart 1 1275 1 - 0B 1275 1 1 2481 254 63 1275 2482 255 63 26
findpart 1 1275 2 - 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2482 255 63 26
findpart putsect 1 0 1 7 boot0 2482 00000000 checkfile back0
findpart putsect 1 1275 1 7 boot1275 2482 00000000 checkfile back1275
set findpart=
findpart 1 fp1-1.txt
To prevent errors, you must download the batch file from:
http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/wilson1.zip
I recommend that you run the batch file in a Windows DOS box, and post
the file fp1-1.txt for confirmation before reboot. You can cc in mail,
but I will reply to the group.
Note that a Linux swap partition was not found.

I have had Linux running for more than 3 months without any crash
and/or known hardware problems. The reinstalls were caused by my
insufficient knowledge of Linux and rendered it unusable. I kept on
trying though. After reading all other answers to my posting I guessed
it is worth mentioning this: recently I have had some problems with
the power supply at home. Dued to a defect in the main power supply
outlet, which I only found out last week, I got total power failure at
some points in the last months. This caused the server to be shut down
unexpectedly. But Linux always recovered from this and did a fs check
everything after this happened. It became worse a few weeks ago that
it would sometimes happen two to three times a day while Linux was
running. I discovered the problem only last week and fixed the power
supply outlet. We never had that for two days and then this disaster
happened. I would like to know could this be the problem why all my
files were gone? A controller problem? Then I should replace it. Funny
is that I never had this problem before.
Thanks a lot for your posting. I will keep searching for the causes as
to what happened to my machine. Thanks once again!!

Hi,
any idea on how to make a 5-button USB mouse (MS Intelli Optical) to
work under X ?
The "preferred" method (/dev/gpmdata) doesn't seem to work at all with a
USB device, the method that is described first in the documentation
(ZAxisMapping 4 5 in XF86Config, then "imwheel -k" under X) does nothing
as well.
Any ideas ?

Subject: slocate eating up inodes?
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 09:07:24 -0300
I discovered my linux box was crashing every other day due to inode
depletion.
My first though was to increase inode-max. I did it, then checked
inode-nr regularly. No matter how high I set inode-max, the number in
inode-nr (first value) continued rising.
So I created a log, sampling inode-nr values every two minutes. I
discovered the numbers went more or less the same all day, but at 4am
inode-nr increased in 14000 units every day. That is the time when
cron.daily scripts run. I modified the scripts in order to create a log
of inode-nr values (before and after the script execution). The culprit
seem to be the slocate script. After its execution inode-nr is increased
in 14000 units.
So the question is... Is somebody aware of a problem with slocate? Is
there a solution other than disable the script? Are other programs apart
from slocate affected?
Setup info:
distribution: Mandrake 7.0
kernel version: 2.2.14
slocate version: Secure Locate v2.1 - Released October 19, 1999
(library dependencies)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x00128000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00110000)
Thanks in advance

Gracefully shutdown the machine, remove the case cover, plug in the
card(s) and/or cables, then boot the machine. Load the appropriate
modules for the devices you've installed, or run SaX, Xconfigurator, or
XF86Setup if this is a graphics card. If this is a printer, run
printtool. If you don't know the appropriate modules for your
device(s), look in file:/usr/src/linux/Documentation/ or at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ for information.
>Also, I just bought a Hayes Faxmodem internal ISA (heard these are good

Does the modem have jumpers? Set those jumpers to reasonable values.
If not, you may have to boot to DOS and use a DOS program to set the
card to non-PnP mode and give it a fixed I/O base, IRQ, and COM port.
Then boot Linux and use the "setserial" command to tell the kernel
what's up with your new modem. Detailed information can be found at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html in the "Internal" section.
The graphics card may be easy, or it may be a pain in the arse. If this
is a brand new SuperFoo7000 card that was just released last week,
Xfree86 probably doesn't support it at all. If the card has been around
for more than 3 months, it's most likely supported. http://xfree86.org/
has info on which releases of Xfree86 support which cards. 3.3.6, which
RedHat 6.2 shipped with, supports a lot of things, but Xfree86 4.0.1
(the latest version) supports even more but is not quite stable yet.
Plug the new card in, boot into runlevel 3, and run Xconfigurator --you
may be lucky. If not, post the exact make and model of the card and
someone here should know what to do.
>I bought a book called Running Linux but it seems to assume you already

The current edition of the book is almost a year old, and the answer to
the question "which hardware is supported?" has changed a lot since
then. Have you checked out http://linuxnewbie.org/ ? They try to make
things simpler for new users. HTH, good luck....

/sbin/init.d/rc?.d/ contains symlinks to /sbin/init.d/$SERVICENAME .
Replace the ? with a runlevel number. So for runlevel 3, "ls -l
/sbin/init.d/rc3.d/" shows a whole lot of things:
K10oracle -> ../oracle
K10xdm -> ../xdm
[...]
S90oracle -> ../oracle
S90xdm -> ../xdm
If I didn't want to run Oracle in runlevel 3, I would remove the
symlinks containing "oracle" from the /sbin/init.d/rc3.d/ directory.
If I wanted to run service "blah" in runlevel 3, I would create an
S??blah link in that directory, and I'd point it at the script for
starting and killing "blah", which should be in /sbin/init.d/blah .
On a RedHat/Mandrake system, these things are in /etc/rc.d/ instead of
/sbin/init.d/ . Slackware does things completely differently. There's
a frontend for this called "SysVinit" for KDE if the above confused you.

Scott,
On certain machines (greater than 50%? Not sure...there are many catfights
about this issue in the advocacy groups) Linux does not properly detect
RAM above 64MB. It is thought that this is possibly caused by an
archaic routine that the kernel uses to query the BIOS.
"Ok," you'll say, "I knew that. Can it be fixed?"
Oh. Yeah, right....no problem.
Edit your /etc/lilo.conf file and add the line
append = "mem=xxxxxxxk" where you replace the xxxxxxx with the RAM reported on
startup. For instance, mine looks like this on my Thinkpad 600:
append = "mem=163264k"
Once you save the lilo.conf file, run lilo by typing "lilo" and then
restart the machine. The "free" command should report much more RAM.
One caveat...double-check the number. Entering a value that is too high
may cause a kernel panic, possibly rendering your machine unbootable.
Good luck!
