This probably already came with your Linux distribution, it's called GNU split.
It's part of the GNU textutils package, if you are really looking for the
source code.

When you install created a partition of /boot first and make it only like
20 or 30 MB which will be way more then enough for the kernel and map
file.

The newest version of lilo has fixed the 1024 cylinder limit problem so
this may be an option.

Where exactly the 1024-cylinder limit is depends on the BIOS. Recent
BIOSes use LBA translation, which puts the limit at 8G. Older BIOSes
used "Large" or "Normal" translation, putting the limit at 2G and 504M
respectively. So try doing as another poster suggested and make a 20M
partition called /boot that's right at the beginning of the drive...
this will ensure that /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/map can be reached by your
old BIOS.

Hi,
I have to shift a linux disk (containing RH6.2 fully
installed) from one machine to onother. The change
of hardware is noted by linux program kudzu and I
go through the procedure of configuring for the new
box. ok. But it didn't seem to completely work. Seems
there are still IRQ conflicts. Ethernet card won't work.

Could someone point me at info/HOWTO's/doco
or suggest how I specify IRQ's and the like for the
kernel so it can work with this new hardware?

Much appreciated,
Paul.

Now I have 2 questions:

1) Why doesn't "df" command show the usage of /mail/quotas, is

2) If the quotas file really occupies very large disk space,

Note that Axent "has a vision"...
<http://www.axent.com/Axent/About/SODs/LinuxStatementOfDirection#3>

"Our vision is to adapt appropriate AXENT products to the Linux
 platform"

Obviously, the "standard" scheme of using /usr/sbin/chat to script the
interaction won't do, as it provides no way of responding to the
challenge/response system that the Defender scheme provides.

The pppd suite included with Debian basically uses chat; it comes with
a sample Expect script designed for use with a "secure access key"
system similar to Axent Defender. I have fiddled with it,
unfortunately with less than scintillating success.

Personally, I couldn't care less about there being a GUI solution; I'm
happier with something that runs scripted, as that [generally] permits
automating the process. This obviously represents an exception, as I
need to be present to punch buttons on both Defender and PC.

At any rate, if you see any answers, please let me know.

Generally, the Installation-notes and README's are written for self-compilation.
If you install an RPM, you usually do not need to run any Makefiles.

I might be wrong here, though.

Linux is not an acceptable desktop operating system. It is useful as a web

As a rule, when I install a capability, I put the tar.gz file in
the /usr/local directory. I gunzip the file there and then
tar the file from that directory. The files that I get when
they are tar'd usually end up in a subdirectory of /usr/local.
>From the subdirectory I run ./configure, make, make install,
and make clean, in that order, and assuming that I have all of
the libraries and capabilities on my system that are needed
for whatever it is that I am building, the executable(s) ends
up in the /usr/local/bin directory. I make sure that that
directory is in my execution path. There could be lots
of reasons that your builds are not working. After you
run ./configure, edit the Makefile and make sure that the
root directory for the install is /usr/local (assuming that is
where you are putting your build). If that is the case, and
the make does not run properly, you should get some error
messages telling you what the error was in trying to build
the capability (e.g., compile error, link error, etc.). If the make
works, then the make install should work (assuming you have
a bin subdirectory, etc., in your root directory (e.g., /usr/local).
In some cases, you may also be installing libraries in a lib
subdirectory and man pages in a man subdirectory (some other
subdirectories are required in the man subdirectory (e.g., man1
etc.). You have to make sure that all of these subdirectories are
present before you run make install.

11) cp /usr/src/linux-2.4/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4
12) Edit /etc/lilo.conf to add the following section:

image = /boot/vmlinuz.2.4
root = /dev/hda3 <----- this should be your root partition
label = linux-2.4 <----- choose your name. Lilo will give you a
choice when more than one image is
                           availble

13) lilo

If all went well, then you should be able to boot to the new kernel.
If you like it, you can rename the directory that the Red Hat kernel
is in and create a symbolic link called /usr/src/linux that points to
/usr/src/linux-2.4:

14) ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.4 /usr/src/linux

If you have your new image in /etc/lilo.conf as the first one in the
file, then it will be your default kernel.

You do not need to update libc or any other libraries. There is
always the small possibility that some software that makes system
calls like ioctl() may break, but I have not had that problem going
from 2.0.36 to 2.2.n. You can worry about such problems when they
crop up.

These are the steps I follow on a SuSE based system. I think Red Hat
is similar in having a /boot directory for the kernel image. It is
vital that you copy the System.map and bzImage files to the correct
place and edit /etc/lilo.conf correctly. Then you *must* run lilo so
that your system will continue to work.

With the method I've outlined above, your old kernel will still be
available incase your new one does not work. You can tell lilo which
one to boot. That is what the label is for.

Now that's cool. There have been many times when that little trick
would have come in handy.
