you have time to ask questions, wait for answers, and install both distros,
but you don't have time to compile a kernel?

cat /proc/cpuinfo
If it gives you info about only 1 cpu, thats all that it has boot.
If two have been booted, there will be info on both.

The 2.2.13 kernel driver will only get you 8-bit SoundBlaster-compatible
sound, at best. I suggest you dump it and use the ALSA driver
(http://www.alsa-project.org). You need at least version 0.5.6, but it
works pretty well in my experience, and produces 16-bit sound.

As stated in the message to which you replied, the Optra Color 40 is a
PostScript printer. As such, it needs to special treatment in Linux.
(BTW, although there are no Ghostscript drivers for many Lexmark inkjets,
Lexmark has produced OS/2 drivers for most of their inkjets. This hardly
qualifies as "worship of the great god Micros$oft," IMHO.)

This is *false*. The kernel you are using must have been compiled with
SMP support activated.

Several distros support SMP out of the box, e.g. all RedHat 6.x distros
have supported SMP (with separate UP and SMP kernel rpms).

Subject: kernel source & Compiling - Redhat vs SuSE
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (ION)
Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 17:47:04 GMT
Hello! This may be a dumb question, but here it goes anyway!
If I have source code for a driver that I want to add to my kernel, I can
easily compile it using my RedHat system and kernel, etc.
However, what I was wondering was if I could compile a kernel for a SuSE Linux
system on a Red Hat system?
I'm assuming not, because of needing the source tree for the SuSE distrib, but
how about if I would have it... could I use my RedHat system to compile it?
Also, how much different is a RedHat kernel from a SuSE kernel? In other
words, is it just the core components that differ, or would a network card
source file (just for an example) have to be specific for SuSE?
Sorry for all the questions! Thx in adv.

It's not the compile time, it's the time to:
extract the source from a distribution,
tweak the configuration parameters,
compile the kernel,
check for mistakes in the compile,
install packages needed for the compile,
substitute kernel and reboot,
fix problems with kernel,
finally after you get everything working...,
remove all extraneous stuff ( source and all ).
That all can take quite a while.

RedHat used to when the SMP kernel first came out
( hoping Mandrake does too, since it's dervied from RedHat ).

Hello,
I tried to print from Netscape (Version 4.6 and 4.72) and in some cases,
when the page is mainly a form, it created zero length postcript files.
In other cases, it works fine. Is it a known bug/feature with netscape?
Is there a workaround? I really don't like to go to a Windows machine
if I have to print out a filled-out form for reference.
Thanks for your time, Vilmos

Win98 writes to the Master Boot Record.
After installation Win98 boots - no choice in the matter.
But there is hope.
Boot up using the Linux installation disk.
Put in the root disk when prompted.
At the point where you are invited to type "setup", instead type "fdisk"
(no quotes).
If this doesn't work type "fdisk /dev/hda" as some distributions require
this. You don't say which type of Linux you use ???
When you are in fdisk press the letter 'p' to print the partition table
to the screen. You will see three entries.
/dev/hda1 is where Win98 lives.
Now the other two /dev/hda? entries refer to the extended partition and
the logical drive (D:) that in your case takes up the whole of the
extended partition.
Linux lives in the entry that does _not_ say "EXTENDED".
Remember this number.
For this example I'll call it /dev/hda3 - it may be different for you.
Just remember it.
Press the letter 'q' to exit fdisk.
Remove the root disk. Put in the installation disk and reboot.
This time round when you get to the place where you are invited to enter
extra parameters and you are presented with "boot:" then type
mount ROOT="/dev/hda3" (with quotes)
This will boot the Linux that you installed earlier.
Once you are into Linux read
man lilo
man liloconfig
Possibly in the /usr/doc/faq/HOWTO directory you will find Good Things.
Depends on your Linux.
Good Luck
P.S.
Careful with that fdisk - it bites.
Just use p to print and q to quit and you'll be OK
If in doubt remove floppies and reboot.

I don't know about Mandrake or Storm, but since Mandrake is based on
RedHat, there is a high likelihood it comes with the SMP kernel. RedHat
6.1 ships with the SMP kernel and works like a charm on my dual
processor machine.
Search the installation CD for a file that has 'smp' in it. It's
kernel-smp-2.2.12-20.ix86.rpm on mine (x86 is 386, 586, or 686).

A few things that may help with netscape...
1. UPGRADE
I don't know about other distros, but redhat 6.1 still ships something
like netscape 4.5. You can get RPMs for at least netscape 4.7, and can
get tarballs of netscape 4.72 with 128 bit encryption from the netscape
site. This should help your stability a lot.
2. Turn off JAVA and JAVA script (edit:preferences:advanced)
This has let me see some sites that locked things up otherwise. Of
course, you'll lose some functuionality at these sites...
3. Planned restarts
I found that earlier versions had a memeory leak or something a
gradually consumed all of the system resources if it was up for several
days. That and the mail client would stall retrieving large messages.
I haven't noticed this problem since I upgraded, but watch the memory
used by netscape. If it gets out of hand, it can pay to restart it when
you don't have anything critical going on.
Still not rock solid, but netscape now stays up for at least several
days at a time for me now. Better then netscape or ie under windows by
far!

"(...) any random surface pattern of relatively light and dark areas
separated by edges (...)" is the relevant part of the sentence. As far
as I can see this means a surface that is not of uniform colour and
texture, on which the "new" Microsoft optical mouse wouldn't work
either.
It's so funny when they wriggle...

Subject: Problem with Red Hat 6.1 install booting...
Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 14:30:41 -0500
I'm having a bit of a problem, and I was hoping someone could help me.
I've got a machine with a P-120 CPU, 24 MB of RAM, a 2 GB hard drive,
and no CD-ROM drive. I want to install Red Hat 6.1 onto it using NFS.
When I boot the machine using a boot disk (tried this with boot.img and
bootnet.img, and their updated counterparts from updates.redhat.com), it
gets up to "Uncompressing Linux...", and then halts with the error "crc
error -- System halted." Does anyone know off the top of their heads
what could be causing this problem? I'd really like to get RH going on
this machine... might be the first step into getting the entire office
away from Microsoft.
Thanks in advance...
