you seem to have tried al;most every thing so I'll only add
you may need to rerun /sbin/lilo on the offending computers after all
changes or reinstall the kernal then re run lilo. Tiny differences in
disk partitions can mangle lilo unless it is rerun.

Yes, they've been saying this pretty much for a year or so...no sign of
anything else than the said press releases. I mean, it's understandable
- they require their ad banner be displayed on the screen all the time,
but in Linux, you may as well switch to another virtual terminal and...

What version of Mandrake are you using?
Try Mandrake 7.1 or download XFree86 4.1 from rpmfind.net.
I had a similar problem with Mandrake and a Dell with an Intel i810 video
chip.
The new version of X worked. No configuration. I just started it.

First, pick a key to use as your "Compose" key. I like to use the
right-hand Ctrl key. Then do "xmodmap -e 'keysym Right_Ctrl =
Multi_key' ". After doing that, you can generate by pressing the
Multi_key, ' , and e. Umlauts are " , grave accents are ` , is Multi,
-, L, is Multi, , , c ... The full list of what you can do is
discussed in the Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO available on
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ or in /usr/doc/howto/ .

When I start linux, the gui logon screen will not show. Instead, I see
the non-gui logon screen, but I cannot type anything in. It will switch
every half second to a black screen and that logon screen. How do I
login? I think this was caused from running wine, but I'm not sure. In
the shutdown log, it shows that the X Font Server couldn't shut down
properly and never loaded properly. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

I've been using linux for a couple of weeks now, I really like it, why,
well the best thing about it is that it is so fast in executing stuff,
and practically never freezes or crashes.

I though that linux would be faster because it doesn't have all this GUI
for deleting/copying.. files for example, but I'm sure there must be
other reasons why Linux is a much faster OS than windows. Anybody knwos
why????

I'm running Redhat 6.2 as well. Go to www.calderasystems.com. There you
will find a link to support-knowledge base. Do a search on "wheelmouse".
There is one titled how to enable the wheel on a wheelmouse. Follow those
instructions and you will be fine. The Caldera Distro is based on Redhat.

Also, I found easier instructions in Linux Magazine this month. It's still
on the newstand. The topic is how to customize your desktop or something
like that.

You can do it. It's not hard. I'm a linux newbie and I have mine working.

Good Luck

Thanks for the followup. I have a interest in this - I was trying to help setup
the partitions on this machine. You probably noticed the HD was actually a 10GB
device but the oldish bios only recognises 8GB. Manually entering the drive
shape into the bios permits Linux to see 10GB. The problem is Win98! - It's C
drive partition was installed with the bios' default HD settings and with the
drive shape explicitly entered, Win98 won't boot :-(. Is it likely that the
mke2fs error is due to incorrect partition table info due to the 8/10 GB
discrepancy? The owner of the machine is reluctant to reinstall Win98! Maybe I
will try a backup + delete/recreate partitions + format/S + restore for the
Win98 C partition if the 8/10GB thing is the problem...

On the extended/logical partition issue: I was under the impression that 4
primary partitions were permitted before having to resort to the
extended+logical scheme - Do you agree?

Regards
Tom.

At the lilo prompt enter "linux 3" without quotes. This will boot in to
a text console where you will be able to login and configure X or make
corrections at the command line.

It doesn't take 4 million lines of code to make it work.

What the freewwweb page actually says is,

Freewwweb is now signing up new subscribers through
Juno, the world's first free Internet service.
To get completely free Internet access, including free
e-mail, just click the "Download Juno Now!" button and
get your free Juno software today.

Note that it says, "signing up NEW subscribers," (emphasis added).
I take that to mean if you already are a subscriber, you won't
have to download Juno.

In, inside /usr/src/linux/ run "make install", review /etc/lilo.conf,
run lilo and, reboot. Before you can do one backup of directory /boot.

Another thing that makes it faster (on Intel processors, anyway) is that
Linux uses the 32-bit protected mode of the processor all the time.
Win9x shifts back and forth between 16-bit real mode and protected mode
many times a second, since DOS uses a lot of real-mode code and Win9x
still runs on top of DOS. These context switches consume processor
time.

Win9x is also rather bad at multitasking. Try running WinAmp and
Word97 at the same time, and Word97 has visible lag on a 1-page
document. No such problem with StarOffice+xmms on Linux, even though
StarOffice is more bloated than Word97. (Again, Win9x is based on DOS
and DOS is single-tasking.)

However, a single-tasking single-user OS like Win9x has certain
advantages if you're only going to be running one thing, and that thing
does fancy 3D graphics. With this in mind, MS may be counting on the
X-Box to save them from ruin if their OS empire crumbles....
