Subject: Help installing "d" disk series for Slackware
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 18:08:37 GMT
Dear group,
I just installed Slackware with all the basic utilities and I now want
to install the "d" development tools disk. As you know, it has make,
perl, compilers, etc.
I am in this catch-22 after much reading and surfing:
I downloaded the "d" disk files to my HD.
I cannot seem to install anything because I don't have "make" or any
"compilers". My question is, how do I install "make" and a C compiler
without having "make" and a C compiler. I read ALL the INSTALLs and
READMEs. Please help. Do I need to get a precompiled binary of a
compiler to do the install ??
Please don't flame me, I'm new at this and I don't go running to
newsgroups unless I've done my own research !
thanks in advance,
Jon

Where can I find and download McAfee and AMaViS programs to scan virii

Try the sketch program. It opens up ai files and allows edits quite
nicely. Still beta though. Latest version is 0.6.5. I discovered this
program after I was shipped a bunch of ai files on a Friday afternoon,
and opening up the files in GIMP did not allow me to edit the files in a
manner that I needed.
It uses Python (you will probably have to install some packages, the
instructions are on the site)
I wasn't impressed with killustrator.
I use xfig to do flow charts.

Thanks again for the answers.
I'm definetely stuck with gzip, since another compression algorithm is not
supported by the client program and we have no control over this programs :-(

I'd second the recommendation for sketch. I haven't used it to
open AI files, but I switched from xfig to sketch a few months
ago for HW/SW block diagrams when I couldn't figure out how to
get xfig to do what I wanted (I forget exactly what that was,
something to do with opacity...).

It is written in Python, and it uses Python as an extension
language, so you can add your own filters, transformations,
whatever.

Tcp wrappers are not as good for security as ipchains. They only work with
services controlled by the wrappers via inetd. Ports which may be harboring
rogue services are not protected. Further, you have to watch out for ip
spoofing (presumably, this is taken care of by your firewall?).
Tcpwrappers are good for controlling access to certain resources, but as a
general security system, use ipchains.
If this linux box is a firewall, then you probably already have ipchains set
up, to some extent. If ipchains already blocks the addresses, then
tcpwrappers will not override them. I would suggest that you look at Mark
Richards' post. If you have more questions, people here will help.
You also might look at http://www.linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/ .

Could be your kernel because it is not a stable release ( use 2.2.14

Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 19:39:41 GMT
I have a 56k modem on my 233Mhz Pentium PC, equipped with what my
Mandrake 6.0 Linux detected as a RealTek ethernet card on such-n-such
a port with so-n-so IRQ.
I also have a Win95B windows box with an ethernet card (I can ping
from Linux box) and another 56k modem. I want to share either one's
internet connection, but really prefer Linux to do it. Making IP
masquerading work requires me to d/load a newer kernel as the one I
have has some holes in it, security-wise. And it seems like a lot of
work, plus I could break what's working now.
Coyote Linux seems to be a reasonable option, floppy based, mentions
hardware that I have (ethernet card, etc), but the website also says
'for those with T1 lines' etc etc
Can I use this? Any success stories out there? Anyone in a similar
boat?

Try this (workes for me under RH 6.1):
# /sbin/lilo -b /dev/fd0
This assumes that you have a valid /etc/lilo.conf. All it does is tell
lilo to mess with the floppy boot sector instead of the system MBR. Once
you boot from the floppy, select the boot you want from the menu.
One thing I intend to try is to see if I can add the boot drive's MBR to
lilo's list, so that I can also boot NT from the floppy (just in case I
forgot to take it out of the drive when I actually wanted to boot NT).
To make this safer, why not try this:
1. Get a blank DOS formatted floppy (DOS format is not required, but it
is convenient)
2. mount -t auto /dev/fs0 /mnt/floppy (or wherever your floppy mount
point is)
3. cp /etc/lilo.conf /mnt/floppy
4. Edit /mnt/floppy/lilo.conf to create the boot environment you desire
5. /sbin/lilo -b /dev/fd0 -C /mnt/floppy/lilo.conf
6. Reboot and see what happens...
I haven't tried this full sequence myself yet, but it should work (IMHO,
YMMV, etc.).

Might as well be "useD" Karel, since it looks like IBM
is backing Linux so it won't need OS/2 for networking
anymore! Anyway, OS/2 was just a place for MS to
learn how to do NT and when they couldn't figure it
out they bought guys from DEC to, er, borrow VMS
concepts to do it! :)
It wouldn't be a bad OS if one could find work programming
it! I still have Warp 3 on one of my machines mainly through
inertia. :)

I'm definitly a beginner to linux, so please bear with me if this is silly.

when one of the users creates a file in a commonly accessable folder the
file only gets read permission for the group. How can I make it so that the
file has read and write permissions for the group. I know that I can change
the permissions after the file is created with 'chmod g+w filename', but I
would like that to happen when the file is created.

..and stuff it full of ram. I forcefed my p90 96MB, runs ok for a

That's pathetic Funkenbusch. Shame on you for trying to mislead the
readers. The patent states that the mouse
can operate on virtually any substantially planar imperfect
surface, especially those having a random surface pattern
relatively light and dark areas separated by edges, for example a
wood grained surface or any surface that is not completely
monochromatic with no image imperfections thereon.

That is definitely not a standard 'cross hatch pattern'. Microsoft
did not invent a new type of mouse. They apparently used a grid of
sensors instead of perpendicular lines of sensors -- this is the
biggest invention Microsoft has produced so far?
And it only took Microsoft 15 years to come up with it. Clearly the
courts should not interfere with Microsoft's right to innovate: next
time it might take *20* years to copy a new idea! We can't have
that, now can we? Seriously, if Microsoft had to invent their way
out of a paper bag they *might* get out by dumb luck.

The module is vfat.o; use:
/sbin/modprobe vfat

..reboot, at the lilo prompt, '[tab]' to see your boot alternatives,
one should be "linux", now type 'linux 1' or 'linux single', this should
dump you into a root shell bypassing root's password login. (Next
possible point of entry is your rescue diskette, and moving hard disks
around.)
..now, 'man passwd' to chk out how to fix it, and 'man adduser' to find
out how to add users.
..myself, I add a username for each kind of work session I need.
