hi, I have a trident 4dwave DX and I am trying to install the alsa driver
for the PCI card. I am running redhat 6.2. I have compiled the driver fine
into all of the modules and a "lspci" shows that linux knows that the card
is there. the problem is that when I try to "modprobe snd-card-trident" I
get a "can't locate module snd-card-trident" and I know that there is one
because I have found it. I get the error with every other module also. I
don't know what to tinker with to get it to work, any help would be great!
thanks

You might try:
export PS1="[\u \W]"
Or a more colorful prompt:
export PS1="\[\033[01;31m\][\u \W]\$ \[\033[0m\]"

Both KDEand GNOME window managers are simply extended graphical
environments to the X11R6 window system. As such, determining which of
the two is "better" depends mostly on how comfortable you are working
within either GUI. Personally, I prefer KDE to GNOME, and some of the
other WMs (especially Enlightenment) as KDE seems to be more mature.

Even though you could copy a file to /var, this still looks like you
are running out of disk space. What does `df -k' report?

I am using RH 6.1 with the kernel 2.2.14. Whenever I boot up with this
kernel my "vga=5" option in my lilo.conf somehow doesn't execute the vga
option, my screen flickers for 2 second and uses the default vga option
instead. When I boot up using the original 2.2.12 kernel with the
"vga=5" option it executes the "vga=5" option. My kerel was compiled
with CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE = Y. I cannot figure out what is going on, is
this a bug? There is also a penguin image on the top left corner of the
kernel 2.2.14 when I boot up to it. Maybe that is causing it or is there
a patch? Suggestions please.

Once you get your timezone and system time right (ntpdate from the xntp
package can do that) use 'setclock' in RedHat (or possibly clock -w in
other distros) to set the CMOS clock to match system time. Although, my
CMOS clock is localtime, since I (rarely) dual boot.

Not sure, but you could alway use /usr/bin/setterm it /etc/rc.d/rc.local
to set it how you want it. See 'man setterm'. You can set it to just
blank or use several different power saving modes. For example I use:
# Set screen powersave
/usr/bin/setterm -powersave powerdown -powerdown 15
Power saving is X is separate (something in XF86Config I think).

But put these into ~/.profile, not ~/.kshrc. And this is a
definite case where you want to invoke your xterms with the
-ls option so each will be a login shell.
The point is that you do *not* want to reset the terminal, a
relatively slow process, each and every time a subshell is
invoked.

No no no.
export PS1="[\u \w] $"
For more information read the "PROMPTING" section of the bash
man page. In particular, look at the \W escape code too.
If you want color, you want to look at using \[ ... \], such
as this:
export PS1='\[\033[36m\]\h:\u \w >\[\033[m\]'

IP masquerading uses ports above 61000.
If you start "tcpdump -i yourExtDev" you will see something like:
11:38:31.943420 MYIP.61750 > DESTIP.telnet: S ......
The source port is above 61000; that is a good hint for masquerading. But
there is a much better way to see this: ipchains -M -L This will give you
the following output:
earth:~ # ipchains -M -L
IP masquerading entries
prot expire source destination ports
TCP 00:06.44 MYIP DESTIP 1260 (61750) -> telnet
It shows you a masqueraded telnet session from MYIP to DESTIP. The original
source port was 1260 and the masqueraded port ist 61750.

/ /boot /var /usr /usr/local /usr/X11R6 /opt /home swap (that about

The usual way of handling printing (other than raw text) in Linux apps is by
outputting postscript which then pipes through Ghostview which uses its own
print driver for the specific printer.
Anything with a print-to- file option (eg: Star Office) will produce postscript
files with a minimum of hassle. Failing that, I guess you could set up a
"postscript printer" with output redirected direct to a file (not that I've
ever done it).
Having got your postscript file, there's a neat little utility called "ps2pdf"
which converts them to pdf. You may have a copy already in your distro.
