[ If you got errors during compile that is another issue. It is very important

The subject line says it all, that's exactly what appears during ./configure

BTW, my PC did not issue any error messages when I did "Hello world", in
fact it created a.out. a.out runs fine

DId I have to run ./configure ;-) for the Hello world, am only a script

Has anyone ported the curses based spreadsheet "sc" to glibc-2.x
and a modern version of ncurses? Same question for the curses
based mini-database "index"?

Assuming that no-one has, could anyone point me to resources that
might help me to port these two programs? That would include
letting me know of a better newsgroup on which to post this
question.

Many thanks....

Mandrake 7.1 also handles USB Printers (I've heard it works with a
few other devices too, like modems supposedly). I got my HP 812C
Deskjet printer working with it. Unfortunately it does not get
along with my ARK 7-port USB Hub.

Subject: hdparm help please - Invalid argument??
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 00:34:37 GMT

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting hdparm (3.6-4) to work on RedHat 6.2 with a
home built 2.2.15 kernel. I have two IDE hard drives the smaller a
Maxtor 4.3, with linux hdb9, etc.; and the larger a Western Digital
WD68AA- with Windows, hda1, etc.
Starting with the -i option:

# hdparm -i /dev/hda1
/dev/hda1:
 HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument
# hdparm -i /dev/hdb9
/dev/hdb9:
 HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument

If I access the drives directly using the -I option I get this:

# hdparm -I /dev/hda1

/dev/hda1:

Subject: Anyone have Intermute for Linux?
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 20:38:10 -0400

I bought a license for Intermute last year before I had Linux and at
the time they had a Linux version and the author told me if I
installed Linux that the Linux version would also work with my same
license code. Since then, some company bought the program out and
changed the name to Add-Subtract. Well, they also decided to screw
all the old Intermute users by charging them to upgrade (even though
all Intermute upgrades were supposed to be free for life). They
also nixed the Linux version completely and removed it from their
site. Well, I now have Linux and I despise ads in Netscape with
Linux as much as in Win98 and I have the license to use Intermute,
but I can't get it at this point since they removed it.

Does anyone happen to have the Linux Intermute package that could
send it to me? I'd really appreciate it. Alternatively, are there
any other ad blockers for Linux I could try?

Thanks,
Gordon

The version of sc included in Slackware, sc-7.2, is built with
glibc-2.1.3 and libncurses-5.0, which I think is what you are
looking for.

Then he's got a broken UPS. Or his batteries need replacing. I can
assure you that mine (a BackUPS Pro 1400 and a cheap BackUPS 300) don't
do this.

I think I can be reasonable certain of being correct when I say that no
brand or model of UPS (designed for the US, that is) is designed to only
provide 90v while on batteries!

What does it report when you do a self test?

I can think of three possibilities for the problem you've observed.

1: The unit may be defective. If it's new, perhaps you can get a
   warrantee replacement.

2: The unit may have bad batteries. Try replacing them.

3: He may have accidentally purchased a Japanese UPS. Japan's
electricity runs at 100v. No reputable dealer should have sold him a
Japanese UPS, but there are plenty of disreputable dealers out there.

Whenever you have some source code from someone
Check for a readme file
If there is a configure file, usually you will have to run it
If there isn't a configure but a Makefile, usually "make" will compile everything
and "make install" will install the binary on /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin
If there isn't any Makefile on configure you are on your own and must either write a
makefile
or invoke the compiler and linker directly.

I you didn't install the proper libraries, makefile and compilers you will have
problems compiling
as well.

Subject: ps2 mouse problem with portege 7020 running win98
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 01:00:49 +0000

I have a Toshiba laptop Portege 7020 that initially came with Windows NT
operating system. Since then I have installed commercial version of
Windows 98 SE in order to get USB and IR ports working. But through
this process, PS2 mouse stopped working. This is when the BIOS is set
to "simultaneous" which is suppose to allow both PS2 and "accu-point" on
my laptop to work at the same time. Setting the BIOS to "auto detect"
will make PS2 mouse work, but of course the "accu-point mouse" on my laptop
is disabled in that mode.

I have downloaded all that is available on Toshiba website (to my best
knowledge), and Toshiba tech support was not able to help me.

PS2 and accu-point mouse worked together just fine in NT. And in my
dual boot setup, Linux mode also works fine.

Q1: Anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem?

Q2: Anyone know if the commercial version of Windows 2000 would fix this?

I would appreciate anyone's help/pointers regarding this.

Un-Ku Moon

I'll buy that "so what"! I wasn't looking for anything elegant, just something
that would eliminate my having to stay poised with fingers on the cntrl and c
keys and this does the trick.
Interestingly,
tar -tvvf /dev/nst0 | head -1
and
tar -tvf /dev/nst0 | head -1
produce identical results.

Thanks for the quick reply.
