Probably this one can be useful. I've made a search and found it at the
microsoft web site:

Subject: LILO Woes with Redhat 6.2 (2.2.14 Kernel)
Date: 24 Apr 2000 04:32:29 GMT

Hi-

I'm a professional driver tester, and at work we put 4 OS'es on our machines (4
partitions on 8 gig hard drives). Our usual procedure is to place Linux (Red
Hat) on partition 4 (because it's usually out past the 1023-cylinder boot
limit, and we can boot it with a LILO floppy).

SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 is usually on the first partition (this will be important
later on in the problem description), with SCO 2.x.x on partition 2, and
Solaris X86 on partition 3. All these will boot just fine by fdisking (in the
OS of your choice) and making that partition active.

Red Hat 6.1 (2.2.12-20 kernel) never seemed to have a problem, we just made a
LILO floppy to boot the Linux partition.

I did a fresh install of Red Hat 6.2 (2.2.14 kernel), and all of a sudden,
linux panics on boot! The kernel unpacks OK, and everything appears to be
going normal, until it searches out partitions. Now, instead of having hda1,
hda2, hda3, and <hda 5 hda 6> (hda 5 is root linux partition, hda 6 is swap
space),
it appears that whatever the partition finder mechanism is is now smart enough
to sniff out the UnixWare file system subpartitions in the UnixWare 7.1.1
partition, and you end up with <hda 2 hda 3 hda 4 hda 5 hda 6 hda 7> hda 8 hda
9 <hda 11 hda 12>, and subesquently, you get a kernel panic because LILO can't
find the Linux partition. I do install LILO in the linux partition (not on the
MBR, because this causes problems for both Solaris and UnixWare, both of which
will stage an MBR holy war if left to their own devices ;^). I have tried
changing the boot partition in lilo.conf (on the boot floppy) from hda 5 to hda
11, and the same thing still happens.

Help! I've gotta get these partitions bootable again...

Thanks!

OK! That takes one step off.

That appears to display my internal IP.

hehe... I just copied most of it off a howto.

OK! Now I just need to find some good documentation on this subject... Know
any good urls for a non-programmer? :) Thanks for your help!

.tar --- archive utility
.gz --- gzip'ed compress utility, you'll find many tar files are compressed
for download
.sh --- bourne shell

EX> quake.tar
Extract by: cd to the directory you want to install and tar -xvf quake.tar
You should see a README file inside the directory created
EX> quake.tar.gz
Uncompress and untar by: cd to the directory you want to install and gunzp
quake.tar.gz ; tar -xvf quake.tar
EX> <file.sh>
Shell script, make executable with chmod +x file.sh and run with
.(dot)/file.sh

Here in comp.os.linux.misc, Kevin Huber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Actually, I think Microsoft has managed to eliminate more competitors
(and more high-quality alternative products) than all of the above
have, which is one of the reasons many people are so pissed off.

It's hard for a user to see a "better" alternative product either die
completely or become unusable because the company producing the product
was purchased by Microsoft, or because Microsoft had enough leverage to
squeeze it out of the mainstream market.

>Who financed the Microsoft empire? There have always been

The alternatives for hobbyists (who generally have better connections
to obscure software sources and a higher pain threshold) are not the
same as the alternatives realistically available to mainstream business
or home users, and the two latter groups of users represent the vast
majority of the marketplace.

I don't think so.

I have no problem with *some* drives needing extra cooling.
It's the "Any HDD over 6GiB is reccomended to sit in a 5 1/4" bay with
a HDD cooling unit" statement that I'm questioning.

Subject: FS: toshiba 430CDT and ZipDrive $480 and FDC settlement of $100!
Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 01:01:52 -0700

I have my Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT with an active matrix LCD for
sale. The CPU is a Pentium running at 120mhz, it has the CD-ROM
attachment and the Floppy Disk attachment. The condition is fair because
of a small crack near one of the hinges (I think this a common problem)
and there are a couple of stickers on the case (a CRYSTAL METHOD and a
SWITCH BLADE SYMPHONY). I still have the original manuals as I'm the
original owner. Also included is a PC-Card FaxModem rated at 56k Flex.
I will not erase the HD which has MS OFFICE 97 PRO, running MS Windows
98, MS MONEY 99 and more! You will be responsible to delete those Apps.
I will include a very nice laptop bag which the Satellite Pro fits very
well in and an external mouse (when you don't want to use the trackpoint)
NEW PRICE $480 (need the cash for taxes). Also as a recent addition I
will include my Zip Drive as well because I realized that I won't need it
after the sale. Also after going to Toshiba's web site to update the
drivers I notice a settlement from the FDC that entitles Toshiba laptops
owners towards $100 free on Toshiba products this is the web site for
more details:

E-mail me for more info (one the laptop NOT the legal settlement I am not
a lawyer) or if you wish to buy the laptop at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
