That was a lilo problem due to a bios problem ( And an approporiate
analogy would be that you could only use 1024 cylinders to start the
car; once it is running, you could use more . . . but would you want
to :-)

True, it is pretty hard to have an intelligent discussion about the
topic. The problem is that for the most part, windows users do not
know much about linux and linux users use it because they hate
windows. I have to admit that for the general public, windows is
probably the better OS. True, it is about as stable as a whale on a
tightrope but its point and click basics are important for some
people. There are people who used Microsoft Word for the last five
years and are still unaware of the presense of the "options" dialogs.
Can you really expect them to use linux?

Some people have no interest in hacking an OS and are more willing to
put up with windows than try to understand the 500 modules of the
kernel.

I use both(but hope to use linux exclusively in a few months due to a
change of circumstances.) I like linux better but I have no
difficulty understanding why to some, the concept of using the command
line seems ancient, complex and useless.

On a 6.1 machine, upgraded from 2.2.12-20 to the recommended
 ( RHSA-2000:037-05 ) 2.2.16-3, using the binary rpms.

Upon reboot, comes up fine but ordinary users cannot login
getting permission denied on /bin/bash. A logging program
that does a setgid to an ordinary user, can't, getting permission
denied.

Perms unchanged from orginal 2.2.12-20, going back to old
 kernal all is fine.

Looks like whatever that setuid problem that it fixed has
disabled any setuid or setgid capability...GRRRRRRR.

There must be something simple to do to allow non-root
 processes????

 Thanks in advance,
 Bill

I had RedHat up and running real nice---dual booting between Linux and Win2K
using LILO as boot manager.
Then I reinstalled Win2K. Now it boots directly into Win2K without the
slightest regard for Linux.
I assume M$ was nice enough to overwrite my MBR info.

How can I restore this? My kernel vmlinuz is on the third partition (I
believe /dev/hda2)
I have access to rawrite, fips, restorrb, etc... I don't have an existing
LILO bootdisk.

What do I need to do to make things happy again?

thanks,

Colin

A long time ago, some ftp-sites support tar. You could tar a whole
directory and download it, anonymously. That was how I grabbed
Linux distributions from the Inet.

sounds like you need the xfont server to be running.
I am not sure where it is started, but have a look in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/

Date: 27 Jul 2000 16:09:37 -0400

Greetings-

I have linux (debian) on a laptop whose screen is too small for the
default font and geometry of emacs; I have to start emacs with the
line:

emacs -geometry 80x30 -font <very long font string here> &

I'd like to set these as the defaults - I tried putting:

emacs.font: <very long font strong>
emacs.geometry: 80x30

in ~/.Xresources

but there's no change.

Any advice?

Using fvwm2, by the way, if that matters.

Ok, before I get flame mail, I am asking this here because it seems like the

I was also trying to compile mysql also and got a similar error about no such

Yeah, unless it corrupts your system. I've finally gotten my
machine to work in run level 3 mode again, but runlevel 5 still
doesn't work for some reason. It just stops when it gets to the
console prompt instead of starting up the graphical menu. If anyone
has an idea how I can fix that, let me know.

It is very hard to respond to an inquiry where you haven't told us what you
did. What LILO version; what kernel version; what hard disk configuration?

Subject: e2fsck problem
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 23:09:32 +0200

Hello everybody,

I've got a problem that I hope you may help me to solve.
I have a linux box running on a 3 partitions filesystem: 1 for root,
1 for /usr and 1 for /home. They all stay on the extended partition
after the first, primary, win98 one. The flavor of linux is red hat
version 6.2. It has always run fine till now, and it still does, but
today I have noticed a small warning during the boot messages.
It says something like the checking time has arrived, and that it
should be wise to run e2fsck on the linux partitions. It has nothing
to do with the maximal mount count, though, because it was written
before, during and after the "forced check" due to the mount count.
I started linux in single user mode, unmounted all the three
partitions and run e2fsck manually, but nothing happened. BTW, I used
the options -c -f on /dev/hda[5-7]
But then the warning still popped out. What should I do to convince
linux I'm a good guy and I regularly check my filesystems, and that I
just checked them?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you very much

Marco
