I know this is not a linux problem, but I thought someone might have an
idea on how to fix this. It is using the gnu gzip/gunzip tools.

thanks

================

I'm in urgent need of help. We have several d/l's coming from our
mainframe system. These files are gzipped on the mainframe. The size
of the files gzipped are between 200meg and 1gig. This translates to
multi-gig files (possibly upto around 80gigs/file) after unzipping.

The problem:

When we try to run gunzip, it will run for a while and then state "File
too large". We checked, and the largefile option is turned on for the
mount on which we are working. Therefore, we concluded that the
problem is with gzip/gunzip. Does anyone know of a workaround?

Unfortunentally, it is not possible for the files to be broken down any
further by our mainframe folks. Therefore, we must find the solution
on the sun side.

Thanks for any ideas

Since I'm new to both Linux and Freebsd....I have a question concerning

what the best method/utility/product available to make an image copies of a

RH Linux system....for roll-out in a QA lab.

My company is purchasing 40 PC's (SBC - single board computer) is a

rackmount 1U high density configuration...this will be used as load
generators

to test our product...in our QA/performance lab. With only 2 people and a
very

short schedule to roll this out in our lab, we are faced with coming up with
the

best solution to install RH Linux on all 40 (soon to go up to 80 PC's).

Once we correctly install Freebsd and all it's load generation software on
the first

PC - only 1 drive per PC...I would like to be able to clone that drive for
all remaining

PC's....then only IP address and hostname..etc...would have to be modified
per PC.

What is the best way to do this..?

Also I have soon concern about managing 40+ RH Linux systems in
general......what

software do most people use now...if they are in the position of managing
many

Linux systems in a lab.

Thanks

Lynx, and I'm not so sure that netscape works like you say it does

Yes. Some BIOSes report a max of 64M with the BIOS call Linux uses to get
the amount of available RAM at boot time. Some report more, and this
seems to have no rhyme or reason. (Phoenix BIOS dated June 1999 reported
max 64M for me; Award BIOS dated Oct. 1998 reported the full 96M.)
Kernel 2.4 will automagically detect however much RAM you have, and
2.3.99-pre5 should be able to do better at autodetection than any of the
2.2 series. FWIW, 2.3.99-pre3 has been incredibly stable for me.

Hi all,
There hasn't been a kernel release for a while. Does anyone know if
technical difficulties were encountered? I thought there was a beta
version of 2.2.15 a while back. But it hasn't been a public release yet.

Also BTW, what happened to comp.os.linux.announce? It also has been
very quiet.
Thanks,

I just downloaded Star Office from Sun. It comes in a tar file
which one must unpack first. I assume you did that somehow.
If you haven't, open a terminal window and in the same directory
as where it is, use the command
tar xvf so51a_lnx_01.tar
(if that is indeed the name of the tar file you got.) This
will produce a directory
so51inst
and inside that will be a subdirectory
documentation
That contains a file named setup.pdf. If you have a pdf viewer,
you can examine that file, and it ought to explain what to do.
I was able to read it with acroread (which I got from Acrobat)
and also using gv with the command
gv setup.pdf
gv should be a standard part of your Linux distribution.

Or, if you are adventurous, you can just go in the subdirectory
office51 run the setup program by
cd so51inst/office51
./setup
Of course you would probably have to be root to install it.

It may be possible to do the installation by double clicking on
the setup icon in the file manager, but I suspect that the
setup up program has been designed to run in a terminal window.
(I haven't actually tried it though.)

Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 09:30:08 -0500

Hey guys,

I'm not entirely sure if these are the right newsgroups to be posting
this question in, but I'm open to any suggestions (including better
newsgroups to try)....

My situation is this: my preferred distro is Slackware, and I currently
use Slackware 7.0. However, I rarely (if ever) use the console... most
times, the only two commands I use at a vterm are "startx" and
"logout". I'd love to be able to set my system to have gdm running like
RH 6.1 does (and no, I'm not switching to RH... don't like it), but I
haven't the foggiest idea how to go about doing it, and trying to study
the init files of a RH 6.1 box hasn't told me anything. If anyone can
help me in my quest, I would GREATLY appreciate it. :)

Thanks in advance...

Subject: deallocvt: could not deallocate console N
Date: 26 Apr 2000 09:15:37 -0500

Hello,

I run linux under console mode (it's an older system) and am having
problems with virtual consoles. I have logins on the first two
consoles and then spawn additional consoles (with the `open' command)
when I need them.

A few days ago I opened up console 3 and then exited. I now cannot
deallocate the console. When I try:

prompt% deallocvt 3

VT_DISALLOCATE: Device or resource busy
deallocvt: could not deallocate console 3

I know there is nothing running on it, `ps aux' shows nothing on tty3.
In the past I've had similar problems, but usually within a few hours
the console was `freed' and I was able to deallocate it.

The really wierd thing is that I can type into the console (nothing
happens), but then when I open up the console with a shell, all
of the command I had typed are run on the shell. e.g.

============================ Begin Example =============================
This is tty3, I can type here

aiejfiej
aeifjije
aifjeijr
blah blah blah
prompt% This is tty3, I can type here
This: Command not found.
prompt%
prompt% aiejfiej
aiejfiej: Command not found.
prompt% aeifjije
aeifjije: Command not found.
prompt% aifjeijr
aifjeijr: Command not found.
prompt% blah blah blah
blah: Command not found.
prompt% _
============================  End  Example =============================

I typed in the first 6 lines on the blank console and then switched
over to another console and typed `open -c 3'.

Any help is appreciated. If you could email me as well that would
be great.

Matt

I've never seen X suck up that much memory, but then I have "only" 96M in
my machine. ICBW but I think X uses memory in much the same way as the
kernel uses memory for disk cache. ("How much memory is *not* being used
at the moment? ... OK, I'll take that amount!")

The $64*1024 question, of course, is "Have you been experiencing
problems with other applications because X is sucking up so much
memory?" If not, fuggetaboutit. If so... see if you can compile the X
server with debugging enabled, send in bug reports, etc.?

In text file /etc/inittab, change the :initdefault: line to (IIRC)
runstate 4, i.e.
  id:4:initdefault:

In Slack7, there iare comments at the start of /etc/inittab that
indicate the proper values for each runstate

caused a lot of things to break. Has anyone had any success in
installing XFree86 on their own Linux machine using the RPMs? And if

Thanks. I'm running Red Hat 6.2 on a Athlon 600 with 128 MBs of RAM

I do not have any first hand data on your modem, however, the rp3 config pgm
is not compatible with some BIOS. Please try the kppp configuration tool. My
modem is an actiontec pci master, which is supported by the manufacturer under
Linux and it works great. You may wish to try a new modem.

/winmount -I IP-Adresse (from your windows-box)

I found these attempts which started today with the first attempt
starting before the time shown here in the first line. As you can see
they are trying to connect one port at a time in order from 3400 up and
at the present time they continue to try diferent ports in numerical
order. I have blocked all connections TO and FROM these addresses but my
logs and tcpdump show that the attempts continue and were still going
when this was posted to redhat.security.general and many other
