Subject: strange sound device behavior on GA-7ZM mobo & Athlon800
Date: 10 Nov 2000 18:07:54 GMT
Hi,
I've recently set up two computers with same mobo, Gigabyte 7ZM.
One with Duron 600, other with Athlon 800. The MB comes with
integrated audio device which is nicely recognized by RH 6.2.
Both machines run 2.2.16-3 kernel. Both are setup identically
(in BIOS part regarding the sound device and in conf.modules),
both load the same modules and both report the device identically:
OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
Load type: Driver loaded as a module
Kernel: Linux uran 2.2.16-3 #1 Mon Jun 19 19:11:44 EDT 2000 i686
Config options: 0
Installed drivers:
Card config:
Audio devices:
0: VIA 82Cxxx Audio driver 1.1.2.1 (3.02)
Synth devices:
Midi devices:
0: Sound Blaster
1: VIA 82Cxxx Audio driver 1.1.2.1
Timers:
0: System clock
Mixers:
0: via82cxxxAC97Mixer
1: Sound Blaster
Still, when running mpg123 to play a MP3 file, the Duron works
flawlessly while on the Athlon mpg123 gives following messages:
unsupported sound format: 33
Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 16bit failed
Trying 44.1Khz, 8bit stereo.
unsupported playback rate: 44100
Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 8bit failed
Trying 22.05Khz, 8bit stereo.
then it plays the file, although the sound quality is visibly
(hearingly :) degraded.
Any hints would be appreciated.
regards, Michal.

Ok, got no responses...But fixed it anyway.
Here is the deal. Not only do you need to allow ftp through
your firewall, you need to allow ftp-data
This is on the linux side in firewall scrip..
Funny that ws-ftp worked either way and dos or browser ftp
didn't work without ftp-data available. Also quote pasv did not
make a difference.
While I am at it, I tried wu-ftpd, ncftpd and proftpd.
wu-ftpd it ok, works through inetd too.
ncftpd is very flexible. Fills in things wu-ftpd is missing. Even
though it is commercial, you get a free 3 user license.
As for proftpd, what was looking like an excellent ftp server
ended up being by far the worst. It is bug ridden, no doubt.
Plenty of buffer over flows, even in latest versions. Now even
if you think it is the greatest thing and say oh I don't have problems
think again. Things are there that allow someone to shut it down
just by typing a few letters in while logged in.
It also looks like it has been idle since about July, maybe no one
is working on it anymore??

I'm having problems to start a default Linux session in console mode
because when I wanted to do this in Mandrake I only had to edit
/etc/inittab and change id:x:initdefault, but this strategy doesn't
result in Debian.

Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 18:20:09 GMT
The default MTA in Debian Potato is EXIM and I had to answer some
questions durin installation process. I didn't know what to answer
exactly, so I need some help from you because my english is not good
enough to understand some of these questions.
What is the `visible' mail name of your system? This will appear on
From: lines of outgoing messages.
Enter value (default=`debian', `x' to restart):
Does this system have any other names which may appear on incoming
mail messages, apart from the visible name above (debian) and
localhost?
By default all domains will be treated the same; if you want different
domain names to be treated differently, you will need to edit the config
file afterwards: see the documentation for the "domains" director
option.
If there are any more, enter them here, separated with spaces or
commas.
If there are none, say `none'.
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):
All mail from here or specified other local machines to anywhere on
the internet will be accepted, as will mail from anywhere on the
internet to here.
Are there any domains you want to relay mail for---that is, you are
prepared to accept mail for them from anywhere on the internet, but
they are not local domains.
If there are any, enter them here, separated with spaces or commas. You
can use wildcards. If there are none, say `none'. If you want to relay
mail for all domains that specify you as an MX, then say `mx'
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):
Obviously, any machines that use us as a smarthost have to be excluded
from the relaying controls, as using us to relay mail for them is the
whole point.
Are there any networks of local machines you want to relay mail for?
If there are any, enter them here, separated with spaces or commas. You
should use the standard address/length format (e.g. 194.222.242.0/24)
If there are none, say `none'.
You need to double the colons in IPv6 addreses (e.g.
5f03::1200::836f::::/48)
Enter value (default=`none', `x' to restart):
You may want to filter out unsolicited commercial email, (UCE, also
known
as spam). Unfortunately it is difficult keeping up with all the spamming
sites and abused relays.
The Realtime Blackhole List is a spam filter that someone else maintains
(see http://maps.vix.com/rbl/). They are very quick to add sites, so
if you bounce on this you may occasionally miss legitimate mail. Adding
a header is an alternative---then individual users can choose what to do
with RBL mail using their personal filter files.
Note that the RBL only works if you receive mail directly. If it is
stored
for you at your ISP, the RBL won't work as it depends on the IP address
the
connection comes from.
Would you like to use the RBL? ('f'ilter, 'r'eject, or 'n'o)?
Enter value (default=`n', `x' to restart):
Which machine will act as the smarthost and handle outgoing mail?
Enter value (`x' to restart):
Mail for the `postmaster' and `root' accounts is usually redirected
to one or more user accounts, of the actual system administrators.
By default, I'll set things up so that mail for `postmaster' and for
various system accounts is redirected to `root', and mail for `root'
is redirected to a real user. This can be changed by editing
/etc/aliases.
Note that postmaster-mail should usually be read on the system it is
directed to, rather than being forwarded elsewhere, so (at least one of)
the users you choose should not redirect their mail off this machine.
Which user account(s) should system administrator mail go to ?
Enter one or more usernames separated by spaces or commas . Enter
`none' if you want to leave this mail in `root's mailbox - NB this
is strongly discouraged. Also, note that usernames should be lowercase!
THANKS

What you are trying to do is browse across subnets. To do this you have
two options: setup a WINS server and configure each subnet to use it, or
setup Samba and configure it to exchange the browse list on each subnet
to it's peer.
I would recommend you go with the WINS solution since you already have
NT domains setup. Using Samba to exchange browse list is a Samba-specific
solution and requires Samba on both ends.

I'd say the EASIEST way to do it is grab PartitionMagic off a warez site
and let it do the work for you, or grab one of the linux distros with a
partitioning program built in (Corel Linux and Linux Mandrake are two that
I know of), and both of those give you the option of dual-booting.

Subject: Multicast between Intranets connect by VPN
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 12:38:08 -0600
Hi all,
Does anyone have any information about using multicast apps between
intranets connected by vpns.
What we have is several branches all connected to the corp office. So
Corp = 192.168.1.x - Austin
Branch 1 = 192.168.2.x - Dallas
Branch 2 = 192.168.3.x - San Antonio
etc.
Each branch can see the other (e.g. 192.168.2.25 can ping 192.168.3.25).
Now I want to be able to do some A/V conferencing between the sites. P-t-P
netmeeting works great... but now I have to figure out how to get the
multicast routed so that everyone can see everyone else. The setup is
pretty simple... Linux boxes are the Firewall and NAT (provided by
ipchains), DHCP, DNS, Gateway, and VPN servers at each locaion for the
intranets. Windows boxes on the intranets.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Glenham

Hi!
Using gnapster 1.4.1a, I'm unable to connect to any napster
server, either the "official" one, or any other. I have the
same problem with every napster client I've tried under Linux.
The reason seems to be "No route to host." Typically, the
client connects to the redirect server, but when a "best" server
is found, my connection is summarily refused.
I run Debian potato on a vanilla standalone box. I connect
to the net through a dialup ISP using a 56K modem. I'm not
behind any kind of firewall, and don't have any problems with
any other kind of TCP/IP protocol.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to connect to
napster? Some sort of entry in /etc/gateways? Something else?
I'm really at a loss here.

Derek,
Thank you for reminding me, I forgot to mention I know how to use 'ls'
seeing as how it is the Linux/UNIX version of what 'dir' is to *DOS. I
know 'who', ps, and a little more that I forgot to mention before (this
happens when you have to go to a library to access the 'Net).

Yes it DOES (you win the false statement of the week prize).
Of course it only is the DEFAULT run level. The one you boot into.
Set it to "3" for non-X.

You can't set breakpoints in a shared library before a program is
started. Maybe that is your problem. I always do a "break main" first,
then run the program to that breakpoint, then set breakpoints in the
shared libraries.

Don't forget that kde is not in the 'main' section.
If you want to go for KDE choose SuSE.
Only after some important people chose Gnome as default desktop, Trolltech
gpl'd qt. Do not support such a behavior! Stick to gnome, icewm, twm, ABK
