That is all in the kernel and therefore has to be released in source code
form. redhat probably edited the code for the kernel and therefore their
version is slightly different than the stock Linux kernel, but it is like
that for most distributions. If you don't know where to get this modified
kernel or another that has the extensions you need, just email redhat
requesting the source for it and compile it for your machine. They have to
give it to you since it is under the GPL.

Hi,

Could someone tell/remind me if the install problem with the
first release of mandrake 7.0, resulted in endless
"inittab not installed" and subsequent hangs, on attempted
initial boot?

eeeeeAAA!

Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2000 04:52:45 GMT

I would like to copy a video cd using linux. I haven't been able to find
any documentation on how to do this. So far what I have been doing is
this:

rip the mpeg track using mpegtv

pad the mpeg file using vcdpad

make the vcd .toc and .bin files using mkvcdfs (part of the vcdtools
package)

and then burn the cd using cdrdao

This is a lot more time than I would like to spend. I would like to be
able to go from cd to hard drive and back to cd without anyother
conversions in between. Basically what I need to know is how do I rip a
.toc and .bin file firectly from a mode2/form2 cd?

Any help is appreciated.

Wife needs either VT102 or VT220 emulation for her real estate comms.
Seems like all the 'term' things (xterm, gnome-term, rxvt, etc.) sport at
least VT102, but:

* only rxvt will print on the requested command (KP-period);
* only gnome-terminal gives a consistent PF4 for shift-F4 key
* NONE seems to have any documentation on keyboard mappings

As things stand, I have to boot MS-DOS so she can use her special app
to access stuff, and do lots of other aggravating tricks on command.
It would be SO nice if I could just open a terminal window and have her
work there. Help!

Yes. Uninstall it as root. Then as root install it by using
setup /net
put it inot a directory somewhere (eg /usr/local/Office51). Then as
user, run
setup
and install the small vesion to your home directory.
Why not use it multiuser. That is what Linux is for.

Cable providers (most notably @home) use the 10.0.0.0 block for
internal addressing. All the headends and all the modems have 10.
addresses. These are probably just headend signals destined for the
modem, and it bridged them to your interface, which then denied them.
Your real DHCP server will have a valid IP address (in the 24.0.0.0
block if you are @home). Try allowing DHCP packets through to this
machine. As for the 10. addresses, I wouldn't worry too much about
it, it's just modem and headend DHCP traffic (the modem gets its IP
address through DHCP as well)

How can I toggle starting x at boot up? I did not configure x to start
so I type "startx" and get enlightenment gnome'ish. I would like know
how to make the system start x automatically and then unconfigure so it
won't.

Is there something like /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -[ed], like on Solaris?

Thanks David

Take a look at /etc/inittab and pay special attention to the initial
runlevels and runlevel 5.

I'm not diskette engineer, but...

We have had in the past (and still have) here at my house several systems,
one of which is an XT clone with only 360k drives. On those occasoins when
I need to move data from a newer machine to the XT it is always a pain.

My fairly extensive experience with this pain has taught me that this
process works ONLY if done in this way:

1. begin with a new 360k diskette that has never before been used or
   formatted.
1a. In lieu of a new one, I'd expect that a used one that has been bulk-
erased (with, e.g., a magnetic tape bulk eraser) would be equivalent,
though I don't personally have a bulk eraser to try it with.
2. Format the 360k diskette on a 1.2m drive.
3. Having done that, you can then WRITE on it with the 1.2 meg drive,
and can also READ it on either a 1.2 or a 360.
4. If you EVER write on it with the 360, then subsequently remove files
or reformat again with the 1.2, it will NEVER again work reliably on
the 360. Even reformatting on the 360 does not solve the problem.

My take on this is this: Having written with the 360 you've written tracks
at the wider track width. Subsequent manipulations on the 1.2 write a
narrow track width. This leaves the narrow track down the middle of the
older data on the wide track. The 1.2 can read this fine, but the 360
then gets a mixture of the two different write-events and simply cannot
cope.

Which brings back memories of the problems people had with floppies
formated on a 360k (40 track) drive, being written to by a 1.2M (or
720k) 80 track drive, and then being unreadable on a 360k drive.
