Try for example the RedHat hardware compatibility web page.
It should tell you about specific motherboards, video boards,
etc. Unfortunately, it does tend to be somewhat out of date.

I connected a linux-box to a windows-NT domain, the tcp/ip setup is
working fine, the samba V2.05 works fine.. When I want to join the
domain with the command: smbpasswd -j <domain> -r <Server> I get a
message containing following:

change_account_trust_password: failed to change password
unable to join domain <domain>

Can anybody help?

Nothing.

You are confused about the nature of /dev/foo. These are just names.
You can make as many of them as you like. Even the major/minor numbers
are not always vital .. in the case of the serial driver, they're just
names too. You can hook any irq and ioport to any of them. Man
setserial and read the modem and serial howto.

"com5" usually indicates a winmodem. If a modem was detected by the
serial_cs driver, cardmgr will have linked one of you /dev/ttyS* names
appropriately.

Subject: sb line and linux alsa driver problems
Date: 30 Apr 2000 21:48:13 +0300

I feel utterly stoopid, help me:

I have sb live 1024 or whatever plugged. I did install alsa 0.57 or something.
Everything else is fine except two things:
 1. in /var/log/messages it is said
kernel: snd: card is out of range (0-0)
    when I insert the driver
 2. no sound is heard when I say "mpg123 foo.mp3".
I have tried with different mgp123 thingies, including alsaplayer, I am
positive that I have said "unmute" and I have set "volume" to some value
in all possible items available with "alsamixer". When I try play sounds
no error messages is displayed, interrupt count at /proc/interrupts
does get increased for device EMU10K but no sound is heard.

Here is my conf.modules:
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-emu10k1
options snd-card-emu10k1 snd_dac_frame_size=64 snd_adc_frame_size=64 snd_index=0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

and yes, I did that thing that creates more files to /dev provided with
alsa-driver. Everything looks good from /dev/asound but no sound is heard..
I've only tried with PCM thingies, not midi, synth or else, only PCM.

what am I doing wrong?

scsi cd's are scd? not sd? so they wouldn't show up.

But another thing to look at would be the
the source for fdisk, when I do a fdisk -l it lists all partition
info on all disks weather mounted or not.
So this program does what you are looking to do.

Myself I do it the old fashion way, I leave my case open and look.

Subject: fdisk | LILO | reformat
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 19:12:29 GMT

I have an Intel-based box, with a basic IDE drive which I successfully
partitioned to run as a dual-boot system - Win98 on the C: partition,
Linux 6.0 (Redhat) on the extended DOS partition, LILO boot. For a
variety of reasons, I'd like to reformat the drive, and take Linux off
the drive (I run it at work now on a different machine, but need this
old drive 100% DOS/Windows).

However, when I fire up FDISK, I can't seem to delete the extended DOS
partition on which Linux is currently residing. Nothing seems to work.
I haven't tried fdisk /mbr - is that what I need to do?

Any advice appreciated...thanks!

fetchmail without any argument runs and terminates after finishing the

There is definitely no fetchmail running between the 10 minutes !!
I get the mail obviously from the crondaemon, but which crontab causes it

With the Linux installation boot disk go through the install up to the
partitioning section. Once there delete all the linux partitions if you
used Disk Druid to do this then choose the back button and save changes
when asked. Then reboot with a DOS/windoz disk in A: and format the
drive.

Use the Linux fdisk program, not the MS one. MS don't know what ext2fs is.
Do the same thing as you want to install it, when you can use fdisk ( or any
other ) delete the partition.
A better way to do is Partition Magic. You can do what you want with this
prog. But is not free.
you can uninstall lilo with this command
lilo -u
( do "man lilo" before, it might be the wrong parameter )

I wish I could help you. I'm in the same boat. I'm quite dependent on Act.
I haven't found anything for Linux that even comes close. Even if someone
does produce something for Linux, the chances of it being any good are
pretty slim. There are jillions of these programs for Windows, and most of
them really suck, even though they all claim to do the same things. There
will probaby be something included with Corel Office, but if it's anything
like previous versions of Info Central, forget it. (I really like Sidekick,
though.)

I'm thinking of creating my own app from a database/spreadsheet program.
But I don't know how successful I can be, and it would be an awful lot of
work.

If anyone is interested in developing this kind of thing, look to Act,
Sidekick, Goldmine, or Maximizer for inspiration. I've tried 'em all, and
these are the ones worth bothering with. The devil is in the details, so to
speak, and the authors of these programs come closest to getting it right.

It it weren't for the contact manager issue, I'd probably be able to wipe
Windows off my drive. I could probably even survive without Word or Excel
(to read the endless email attatchments people so mindlessly send.)

See the mount(8) manual page, in particular the description of the ufstype

Okay, it seems I had compiled the floppy as an IDE device and that was
causing problems... fixed that. Now it boots. Then I found that my
ethernet cards won't work in it. I had compiled the NE drivers

set this in the Kernel instead of loading the module?

That's a perfectly good answer, so what's your problem with it? If you aren't
specific about the reading problem you have here, you can't expect us to help you
with it. Which word do you not understand? "local"? "global"? "option"?

Set and export aren't even vaguely comparable. You are asking for the
difference between apples and oranges.

Set is for various modes of the shell. Export is the declaration format for
global variables. That's all. I'll quote you the man page so you can tell us
what you don't understand:

set [--abefhkmnptuvxldCHP] [-o option] [arg ...]
-a Automatically mark variables which are mod-
ified or created for export to the environ-
                      ment of subsequent commands.
-b Cause the status of terminated background
jobs to be reported immediately, rather
than before the next primary prompt. (Also
see notify under Shell Variables above).
              ....

The only one of these I use is "set -x" !

Look, just try it:

   bash$ set xxx=1
   bash$ echo $xxx

   bash$ xxx=1
   bash$ echo $xxx
   1
   bash$ sh -c "echo \$xxx"

   bash$ export xxx=1
   bash$ sh -c "echo \$xxx"
   1
   bash$

Presumably it would be found insulting to suggest GNOME Card as an option?

Your comments of "creating app from db/spreadsheet" suggests a thought;
Applix's "SHELF" is an open-source framework for building applications.
They include a sample application, a Palm Desktop package.
