I'm using RH 6.2 with updates on a PII, using IDE Creative, recompiling
kernel to support ide-scsi.
I tried both Cdrecord -1.9 and 1.10 beta with similar results.
When I try to burn a CD sometimes I get invalid access errors, in any
moment of the recording (begin, end, middle). After I get an error like
this, a few times my IDE HDs/CDROM are inaccesible and once my CD needed
a cold reset to work again.
This happens about 66-75% of the times, even in dummy mode.
It never happens in windows, using Nero 4 or 5.0

I found that I had the same problems if I and the automount dameon
running. Since canning this, all works okay. I think that the dameon
might be trying to access the cd during the burn...but that's a
uneducated guess. So, if you have 'automount' running, kill it and try
again. Worth a try...

The display is the display and the analysis is the analysis. Use the best
tool for each. The best tool for the analysis is the one that meets your
need for performance. The best tool for the display is one that works well
with whatever you choose for the analysis.

Hello all, please help .
I've had Linux installed on my system for a year and some now.
Here's whats' up: X windows has never really worked good . It was
slow, like I was running Windows '95 on a 386 or something (I have a
Pentium ii 300Mhz /98 Megs ram). Recently, I edited my XF86Config file
(I'm scared to touch this thing) I put in some new modelines for my
monitor, calculated from a posting describing how to do it. But, my
system seems to just skip over them or something as if they weren't
even there. I can't change the resolution by using 'ctrl - alt - +/-
keys' either.
So, I'm wondering, is there a way of seeing exactly what video
mode that X Windows is running in? Like, some log file or something? I
know how to switch between users or whatever by pressing 'ctrl - alt -
f1, f2, f7 '.
Also, I installed a new 'microcrap wheelmouse' on my box lately.
I found out how to set it up using 'mouseconfig'. It works on the
console, but not in 'X'. It jumps around the screen and acts like it
was on coke or something. DOes anybody know what's up with this ? I
don't care about if the wheel works, I just want to get my fucking
mouse working so I don't have to quit X windows every time.
If anyone knows any of this, and wants to help, I'll
appreciate it..

What kind of kernel configuration error might cause the system
time and date to serge forward about 16 hours or so around ten minutes
after booting the new kernel?
The system has worked for months on an older kernel that
someone else who is no longer around here configured. As I said in an
earlier message, I am simply building a new kernel to add sound
support.
Well, I built one without the sound and it still has the
glitch. When it is in sea sure mode, the system seems to hang for a
fraction of a second and then it resumes working, only with the
corrupted time count.
I did check with Dell to see what kind of PCI bus controller
is used and they indicated that it is a 440FXPCI. Those letters do
not appear to exist in that combination anywhere in the kernel
documentation which means that there is probably some generic choice I
should make that is not intuitive.
I have noticed that the sound drivers also do not appear to be
working, but I don't know if that is related to the same problem.
It's all academic until the system is stable.
I can communicate on the network and everything looks fine
until the system glitches and then the date shoots ahead.
It also does not corrupt the CMOS as the date is correct after
a reboot.
What should I be looking at since the system seems to be close
to working? As luck has it, nothing complains. It's just obvious
that the system is unstable.
I have had the same results on a 2.2.17 kernel and a 2.2.9
which is what I am working with now.

Try using Xconfigurator (on RedHat systems). Or try XF86Setup (you may
have to install it).
These tools will help you find the right XF86Config file for your
hardware and will (attempt to) install the correct X server for your
video adapter. After you have entered all your information, the tools
will test the settings you selected, and if all goes well, they will
even write the XF86Config file for you.
I don't ever touch my XF86Config file either; I use the above tools to
do it for me. Works 99.5% of the time for me (there's that other 0.5%
that's due to either Fate or the Devil, depending on how you look at
it).
Hope this helps.
Stephen.

"403 Forbidden". I have checked the rights to apache home directory and

A month ago i installed the same distribution of linux (except postgres and

Could you tell me what i could do about it ?

What you probably mean is IMAP over SSL (not SSH). You might want to have
a look at mutt (http://www.mutt.org), which is a very powerful and highly
configurable mail client. It supports IMAP over SSL, see the Mutt manual,
sec. 4.11, for that. Other features are POP3 support, PGP/GnuPG support
and can be configured for almost everything.

Hello Greg,
Now that I know a little bit more about what you are
trying to do, I can answer it better. IFCC is designed so
that applications built using it can scale with multiple
processors.
Once a request has been received by a server, the application
developer has several options in terms of how it is to be
handled. It is really up to the application developer to
decide what makes a best solution given the amount of memory,
number of processors, number of network cards, rate at which
requests are coming in, etc., and how to scale.
When a request arrives at a server, a response can be synchronous
or asynchronous. A client can indicate as part of a request
whether it is going to wait for a response, or pick it up later.
Facility for doing this is in place for IFCC generated code.
How a request gets processed by a server is totally up to the
developer. As you found out, if a thread is created every time
a request comes in, one can easily tie up the machine (this is
probably what happens with vanilla RPCGEN generated code). With
IFCC generated code, the developer has choices about how to
implement the best solution. The main options are
1) synchronous call.
Simple and a good place to start. No threads, semaphores,
mutexes, etc.
2) create a thread for every request that comes in.
Little bit more work. System can get overwhelmed with too
many threads.
3) have a maximum number of threads that is a some how related
to the number of processors, memory, network cards, etc.,
in the system. The threads would be spread over one, or more,
pool of threads, and they would probably be all created at start
up time. A thread would not be created or destroyed every
time a request came in. When a request comes in, it would be
put into one of the work queues. Each thread pool would work on
a work queue. The threads in a pool would take turns to do the
work. Where there is no work, they wait.
If you have a multi-processor system, then 3) would be high on the
list.
The example that I had mentioned previously, tutorial18, shows 1)
and 2). It can be turned into 3) with additional application code.
One day we hope to provide a generic way of doing 3) so that it is
easier to leverage multi-processor systems. Ideally, implementation
of 3) should be such that it could be configured and re-configured
dynamically.
I believe Linux does support kernel threading for user threads
within a process. Given IFCC generated code, what you want to do
can be done. The optimal solution lies in being able to control
how many threads are productively running before performance
starts getting adversely affected.
Hope this helps.

Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 22:30:11 -0000
I am running RedHat 7 with the KDE 1.x desktop and have kppp configured to
run my ISP connection. As root, I can start kppp without a problem.
However, when a non-root user starts kppp, a dialog box pops up requesting
the root password to continue. Buried deep in the on-line documents, I
came across a discussion on this which recommends setting the SUID for
kppp and changing the group ownership and creating a group for PPP users
and making sure all of the file permissions are set correctly. I did all
of this, and still kppp asks for the root password for non-root users.
This seems like a silly problem, since the Gnome ppp launcher does not
seem to have this problem.

If you have it as a doc, print it to a file, this will give you a ps. Then you
can use ps2pdf to turn it into a pdf.
If you have it in ps-format, just use ps2pdf.
if you have it in tex-format, do teh following:
latex foo.tex
dvips foo.dvi
ps2pdf foo.ps
(there might be shorter way for the tex-thing).
