Canon is an anti-Linux company, and, as such, refuses to release the specs
or make a binary-only Linux driver for these beasts:

If the system you telnet into does not recognize xterm, it is broken. But
TERM=linux is not likely to be recognized on a non-linux system.
For my Solaris ISP I have the following in my ~/.login (for csh there).
I think part of it was there and I added the "linux" part.:
# Set Terminal Options
# setenv TERM vt100
if ("$TERM" == "") setenv TERM vt100
if ("$TERM" == "unknown") setenv TERM vt100
if ("$TERM" == "cons25") setenv TERM vt100
stty erase '^H' kill '^U' intr '^C' eof '^D' quit '^\'
stty echoe -istrip tab3
if ("$TERM" == "linux") then
setenv TERM vt100
stty erase '^?'
endif
For sh or bash you could have something similar in ~/.profile:
if [ "$TERM" = "linux" ]
then
TERM=vt100
export TERM
fi
And also fix your stty erase wherever that is set.

How did you get it to work? I tried to follow the instructions for
this in the HOW-TO and figured out that ssh and rsh don't connect the
remote command to a tty, which the scheme apparently depends on.
I verified this by using ssh to run a sleep command remotely, and doing
a process list on the remote machine and seeing that the sleep had no
associated tty.
Do you have to specially compile ssh and rsh to achieve this?

Am running Gnome on RedHat 6.2. I set up my desktop and save the session.

In fact, sometimes when I log on, the windows are all a different size and
in a different position from where I left them. I do save the session upon

Anyone have a verified method of producing liner notes (ie sleeves ie
inserts) for audio cassettes? Dedicated software or latex/lyx
templates? I don't have a printer at home so it would have to produce
some reasonable output like PostScript or dvi. If I can't find a
linux-friendly method I'll gladly take suggestions for other platforms

Is there a FTP site where you can still get this.
I actually still have this, since I have the powertools CD set for RedHat
5.0, which includes, among other things, RPMs and SRPMs for a 1.0 release
of Afterstep.
After Afterstep 1.0, they went from one .steprc file to multiple files.

I want to be on the safe side. Although everything works fine (more or
less)... sometimes it gets cranky. Network load goes sky high, or processes
just make multiple copies of themselves etc etc. About 2 weeks ago, we had a
very long power failure, and when the system came back up, some files were
messed up, including my firewall scripts.
I have a feeling that by the time I got in after the weekend, my system may
have been compromised (i.e. hacked). I haven't found any logs to indicate
so, but the firewall script did not execute on reboot, I had to do it
manually. Ever since that day it's been acting up. So since I dont know if
this is because of corrupt files or a hack attempt, I'd like to be safe and
reformat the whole thing. Fortunately, my /homes is on a completely
different hard drive, as well as /etc. So I can keep these files while I
reformat the rest.
Thanks

Run ppd verbosely with the -v option and see where it disconnects.
As I understand it /dev/cuaX is depreciated, but still works, so this
should not be the problem. You just need to have more logging to see what
is _really_ happeneing.

Adaptec support for Linux is not the best because Adaptec, for the longest
time, was anti-Linux and refused to give the needed information to Linux
driver developers. They finally changed their mind, but not before the
Buslogic/Mylex adapters had a chance to have much better Linux support.
Also, Adaptec changes the card's interface in subtle ways with each new
card, or even with different revisions of the same card, making drivers
work poorly.

There are devices that allow you to hook up PCMCIA cards to a desktop
machine. However, you would probably be much better off replacing your
PCMCIA modem with an external modem. Hw long ago did you buy the modem?

I guess it depends upon your definition of a socket. I think even a
non-tcp/ip method like a pipe or fifo still technically uses a socket.
But it is rather simple to communicate with a program when it is listening
to what appears to be a normal file and all you have to do to communicate
with it is write to or read from that file.

Hey all. I asked about this a while ago but it never got fixed. I
would
like to try again.... (PLEASE RESPOND BY EMAIL)
I have a Sony CDU948S external SCSI CD Burner, that I would like to have
working under Linux (I am running YellowDogLinux CS1.2). I have gotten
it to burn a data CD once and an audio
CD only three times ever in YDL. Most recently, I tried do make an
audio CD
like this (after a restart of the machine):
cdrecord -v -dummy speed=4 dev=1,5,0 -audio -pad *.aiff
I think this has worked before (without the dummy tag, of course), but
it
gets to the process of writing to the CD....
Track 01: 0 of 48 MB written
.... and nothing happens. It gets this error:
cdrecord: Device not configured. Cannot set SG_SET_TIMEOUT.
Currently running 'write_continue' command.
Condition not caught: SCSI ALREADY RUNNING !!.
Raisecond: not implemented.
Aborted.
.... than after my little SCSI error, if I do a "cdrecord -scanbus',
which
used to (when I turned on the machine) show an internal 500MB drive, my
CD-R
drive and my Jaz drive, now does this:
scsibus1:
cdrecord: Device not configured. Cannot set SG_SET_TIMEOUT.
1,0,0 100)
And that's that. I just won't work. Somebody suggested that it might
be a
termination problem. I used to have the drive (again, externally) set
to ID
5 with a terminator plug on it. Now, I have my Jaz drive chained after
it,
with ID 6, and Termination set to "A" on the drive. Is that active?
Anyway, I do not know a lot about SCSI on Linux, nor enough about Linux
still to interpret what that all might mean. Any ideas?
I would be most grateful for any help.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

If you are doing a RedHat install, select 'text' to get a text-based as
opposed to a graphical install. Don't bother installing X.
Run 'Xconfigurator' or 'xf86config' once you get a text-based Linux on
your system.

Your main login would need to chroot to their home directory and you would
need to replicate any system files, commands, libraries, etc. that they
need to access from there. In other words you would just about need to
duplicate a system within their home directory.
I know that I would NOT want to be bottled up in a system like that,
because it means that newbies cannot get useful help from other users.
On a normal system, if somebody has something to hide, they can simply
change file permissions.

I've seen problems with lvd drives on a non-lvd controller - and then
I had to jumper the drive so that it starts out in SE (single ended)
mode.
but controllers should be smarter than drives (well, sort of) and they
should realize that the drive isn't lvd. most of the lvd controllers
I've seen have 2 68pin connectors; one for lvd and one for scsi3/se.
have you tried the other connector (if it has one)?
which controller is it? my tekram 390u2w works equally well for lvd
and se drives.
