Subject: can mkisofs include only some files from directories
Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 02:01:42 GMT
All,
I need to create a CD image of only certain files from several
different sub-directories (ie modified in last 30 days). I can
generate a list of the files, but how can I use this list as input into
mkisofs (if at all)?
Is this possible without copying the original files? I also need to
make sure the directory structure remains intact.
Thanks,
Martin
PS. I consider this quite a severe limitation of mkisofs if this is
the case ...

Subject: ``..Advice For New Immigrants...
Date: 5 May 2000 02:11:21 GMT
If you are feeling unwelcome in a country they just recently kicked
the door down on, perhaps they could take a few tips to ease their adjustment.
And a few social tips:
1. Understand you are in a foreign country, probably illegally. The
language barrier is of your own making and is not a responsiblity of the
host country.
2. Stop complaining. No one owes you anything, and the freeloader and
whiner rolls are already full. Remember that you would not remain here
unless the situation was much better than at home.
3. Expect that most people you meet will honor your culture, traditions and
laws only to the extent that you honor theirs. Understand too that illegal
immigrants come from the back of the line in their own country and their
presence causes a burden on the social and economic resources of the
communities they settle in. Since many of you are poor and unskilled, you
wind up on the welfare rolls. Those who do pay naturally resent your hands
in their pockets. Many workers, especially in the construction industry,
have been displaced since your arrival.
4. No nation is morally or legally obligated to accept another nation's
underclass. Therefore, since legal immigration is a privilege, it is best
to be grateful. And since illegal immigration is a crime, it is wise to
stop demanding all the time.
Which leads last to point #5;
5. Obey the immigration laws of the country one currently finds oneself.
Of course, compliance with #5 would eliminate the problem altogether since
most of those who are complaining of feeling unwelcome would have to leave.
Only in America!

Unless it is Linux on an alpha, or linux on a SPARC or UltraSPARC (I'm
making the assumption you have a PC) - you can't. Binary is binary, and
SPARC != alpha != PA-RISC != PPC != MIPS != SPARC != UltraSPARC

With Caldera I could , as a regular user, click on an RPM file, bring up
Kpackage, and install it. Evidently superuser powers were granted to
the regular user.
I am trying to duplicate this feature in SuSE. I have tried this:
su -c "/opt/kde/bin/kpackage"
That opens kpackage as superuser but if I try to install an RPM I get
this message:
" can't open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"
I would guess that my superuser permissions don't extend beyond opening
up kpackage.
What can I do to correct this?

301 is IBM BIOS talk for a keyboard error. You can look up the other
one (162) at www.ibm.com.
By the way, this has nothing whatsoever to do with Linux. You really
would get better responses in comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc or some such
newsgroup.

There's a book on the 4.4BSD operating system (of which FreeBSD, NetBSD, and
OpenBSD are all spin-offs, as I understand it) published by Addison-Wesley.
I haven't read it, and can't say anything about it other than that it exists.
Hope this helps.

AFAIK, the only ftp daemon which can "restrict" users upon login to
a limited area of the filesystem, is PROftpd with the chroot-like
feature.
here is a URL to that feature in their documentation:

No, they most certainly were not. You had to have done something to
change the permissions somewhere.

Ed,
WU-FTPd does this very easily. Not many people RTFM though (man 5 ftpaccess).
Look into the "restricted-uid" and "restricted-gid" directives. If you want to
restrict a set of users, create a group and place the untrusted users in it.
This is especially useful in webhosting situations.

Andy

Warren,
Could you be a little more specific... What Mandrake version? What Kernel?
What XFree86 version?
The only thing I can tell you with the information that you supplied is
your need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config. (You can also use XF86Setup
and the slew of other utilities out there). Additionally you should have a
look at some of the debugging information that the X server gave you when
it crashed. Did it log anything in your syslog?

Andy
