It is amazing to me that with all the agony and hair pulling, some IS
manages I hear are discussing doing without external email entirely.
Nobody seems to realize that it this virus stuff is just a symtom of a
broken product (ie Exchange/Outlook) and that you need do nothing other
than get rid of those products and replace their functionality.

None of the press say anything like that, naturally.

So much for a free press.

[Summary: This person has an old pre-IDE soundblaster CD-ROM drive. He
 was able to perform a RedHat install with the CD-ROM, so it is one of
 the vender-specific CD-ROMs that Linux supports.]

Try inserting the kernel module for this CD-ROM by hand:

        cd /lib/modules/$( uname -r )/cdrom
        insmod sbpcd.o

Try other kernel modules if that one does not work.

Subject: what changed my /tmp's write permissions?

Hello,

I've had some scripts running for quite a while now that have lines
similar to the following line:

set command [exec /bin/cat commandfile]

These worked fine until just about yesterday and now I cannot figure out
why they don't work any more: here is the error message I get etc...

$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
$ pwd
/home/nzanella
$ /bin/cat commandfile
ls
$ tclsh
% set command [exec /bin/cat commandfile]
couldn't create error file for command: permission denied
%

So what is this error file stuff? All MY files are readable...

Another thing: I notice that my locate command no longer works on
my Red Hat Linux 5.2 box:

$ locate cat
locate: /var/lib/locatedb: Permission denied

$ ls -l /var/lib/locatedb
-rw-------   1 root     root            0 May  5 04:02 /var/lib/locatedb

# df

# ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxr-x   3 286      wheel       12288 May  5 14:41 /tmp

Hmmm...

I did not do this to /tmp . How did this happen? /tmp is no longer world
writeable!

# ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxrwx   3 286      wheel       12288 May  5 14:41 /tmp

That's better!

Huh, now my scripts work fine!

Let me update the locate database...

# /etc/cron.daily/updatedb.cron

(minutes later)...

$ locate cat|less
/bin/cat
/bin/zcat
[snip]

Now, the issue I am trying to bring up is the following:

There must be a redhat script that somehow chmods the permissions of
/tmp under certain (still unknown to me) circumstances. I am sure that
some of you have had this happen to you as well. Can anyone explain this
strange phenomenon? I suspect it has something to do with cron.

Note: this happened to me already at least four times over a fairly long
      period of time. I never bothered to bring this up before since doing
      a manual chmod a+w /tmp as root is not a great deal of trouble but
      still.

Neil

I have a better solution:

Have two kinds of email. One for the outside, one for the inside. People
are required to read mail from the internet proper with a plain POP3
client, such as Eudora or Netscape. People can read mail from fellow
employees using Microsloth Lookout.

Of course, you really want to disable Javascrip in HTML if you use
Netscape as a mail client. I have seen security products marketed using
pages which require javascript to read. Look at some of rsa.com's web
pages to see what I am talking about.

It seems people get too caught up in meaningless features to pay attention
to more important features, such as security and stability.

Looking at 'man bash' I believe it would be:

0 17 * * fri /scipts/backup >> /var/adm/cron.log  2>>/var/adm/error.log

Assuming that is how you really spell your 'scipts' dir.

That would work, I guess, but the usual way is:

0 17 * * fri /scipts/backup >> /var/adm/cron.log 2>&1

Peter,
Let me explain myself.
What YOU mean ( pointers to functions, as members of structures ) is=20
INDEED possible in C.
Now what HE has written, is clear (as one may suppose) example of C++=20
code, and the phrase "it is possible in the class" ( refer to the=20
quotation ) means that he really MEANT function members of structures, =

which is the feature of C++/etc.

I have exactly the same problem after - please feel free to giggle ;o) -
 accidentially altering /etc/mtab instead of fstab and inserting - at
least it seems like - an invalid entry.
After that the system hung up, when it tried to unmount the filesystems
on system shutdown. So I had to turn the computer off without having
linux shut down regularly.
When I tried to reboot the system the last 2 kernel-messages
were "Filesystem not cleanly unmounted - Check forced", which ends
with "PASSED" status!!! and "Trying to remount Root FS ReadWrite",
which writes out "OK" and after that hangs up!

When running fsck from rescue disk i have the same output as Nick, i've
tried several other programs...
Since i have no man-pages on my rescue disk and - the way i crushed my
system should show that i'm not very familiar with linux - i dont have
many syntaxes in mind, there may be lots of other ways to try to rescue
my data.
OK, fdisk -l didn't list ANY logical drive on my second partition -
which cannot be ( at least not all ) missing, since I can boot Win2k
from one of them. So I just guess, that's the information fdisk -l
should write out maybe! ;o)
Well, debugfs shows about the same message as fsck ( i dont have it in
mind exactly - but if it will help you to help me, i will look up of
course ).
At the end, just try mount it tells me "wrong FS or bad superblock".

Any idea how I can undo these changes to mtab?

THanX a lot in advance!!!!

I would like to upgrade to 6.2 or maybe even try Slackware, Debian or
one of the other thousand distributions. In order to do this you must
back up files and at this point I disagree with you about only having to
copy /etc and BOOM you done. That is so wrong!! What about the
kernal!! and all the applications/server/compliler/local
programs/configurations of servers and such that are set up at the
time. You don't find ALL of this in the /etc path!! There is so much
more to backing Linux. Are you prepared for your hard drive to choke
and still be able to get back where you were. If so how are you doing
it?

I am having difficulty backing up my current system. Idealy I want my
backup to be bootable. I have been unable to achieve this. You see, if
Windows crashes you at least have an avenue to access possible fixes
with the safe mode. If Linux crashes you can't boot up into anything.
You have to revert to a rescue disk set which a lot of know how to use.

Never had this happen thru all 5.x and 6.x versions.

PS--Permissions on /tmp should be 1777. This includes the 'sticky bit':
