This could happen becuse your BIOS is set for an OS with ISA-PnP.
In your BIOS setup you should disable ISA-PnP-OS.
Then your BIOS will give a listing of ISA and PCI devices, which
Linux will read and use.
If all goes well that should be ok.

No, it will allow the server to accept all sorts of connections from
_every_ remote machine on the network (for example, spying on your
keystrokes) without any form of authentication at all.

It is better to use the xauth(1x) mechanism:
 http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/matic/xsecur.htm

Oh, *please* do not post this x-vcard garbage to Usenet.

Make that:

        append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1"

Bet it works this time.

Hmmm. 12M+4M=16M, similar to what I went through with a P100 laptop.

I ended up having to put the 'append=' statement in lilo.conf just to get
it to accept anything over 16M.

Has the modem got jumpers on the card, and if it hasn't it's probably
a winmodem, meaning no go.

Just had a go over here and users, who and w all work fine with
a second user logged in and as an ordinary user so I can't begin
to imagin what the problem might be.

It might be useful to say which distro you're using and how those
users are logging in (via modem, over a lan or just at the keyboard
in a seperate session/console).

To find out what the security settings are for the file do

$ ls -l named.conf

and you'll get a report that looks a bit like this, but I havn't
got a file called /etc/named.conf so I've just brought up
/etc/mime.types as an example.

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7374 May 11 12:44 mime.types

find out who the user is and then log in as that user and look
at the file. In the past I've had to modify files that I owened
before I could view them. As root do:

$ chmod +rw /etc/named.conf

Then as root you really should have read and write access to the file.

I'd suggest a good place to start is a book such as Learning Red Hat Linux
by O'Reilly or Running Linux also by O'Reilly. I've got both of these
books and use them frequently.

A good website to give you some of the basics and some of the essentials
is Patricia's site at:

http://www.crosswinds.net/~beginnerslinux

You can also get the Meta-FAQ and a lot of other documentation from
http://www.linuxdoc.org the Meta-FAQ will answer many general questions
about the OS and about where to find further information and resources.

So read the Meta-FAQ, have a good look at Patricia's site, if you're still
interested buy a Book (Learning RH Linux mentioned above comes with a RH 6.0
CD), and if you're still interested after reading the first two or three
chapters of the book go ahead and install.

It's a very steep learning curve so be prepared to do a lot of reading, and
it's well worth the effort.

On your ISP/Webhosters website there should be information about running
CGI. Most ISPs don't let you run your own stuff only scripts and
utilities that they provide but you may be lucky and have a provider
that will let you use your own CGI, read their website to find out.

if I may: it's all written in the doc that comes in the CD (if
I remember correctly, it's in the linux/documentation directory,
where you'll find three pdf files, one of them call install something)

now, the way I found out of course, is after a few trials and errors
doing exactly what you did :-)

in short: as root, run do: install /net (using the script on the CD)

then, for each user account, go into whatever directory where you have
installed StarOffice in the previous step, and execute: install
(not the script on the CD);

it will install some local stuff for each user (not the whole thing mind you)

et voila :-)

Jeff:

Look for a file with a name similar to...

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo:0

It sounds like you were in the past attempting to add alias IP
addresses to a network device. The file may contain either IP numbers
or a range of IP numbers.

You will probably have a file called file /etc/sysconfig/network-
scripts/ifcfg-lo which is ok. Don't touch this one. Delete the one (or
better yet move it out of that directory) with the :0 after it. If it
made no difference you can always move it back.

You may also have to do the same with a file
called /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0

Good luck
Mark

simpler still - edit the line in /etc/profile to read "ulimit -c 0". that's
it no more core files.

It uses the HTTP reply header field "Server:"

When you send a request like

GET / HTTP/1.0
Host: www.garden.com

You get a reply like

HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Server: Apache 1.3.6 on Solaris
Content-Length: ....etc

IIRC, after updating the kernel, it is recommended that you run

depmod -a

to correct the module dependencies. Could this be your problem?

I am trying to execute a script in my $HOME/bin every time I get a new
email. This is how I set up my .forward:

"|/home/my_account/bin/script arguments"

It doesn't work, the email gets returned to the sender with the message:

sh: script not available for sendmail programs
            554 "|/home/my_account/bin/script arguments" ... Service
unavailable

Any clues on what I might be doing wrong? I did make the script
world-readable/executable.

Thanks in advance,
Venkat

I thought the members of this group would get a kick out of the
following: today I installed M$ Office2000 at work: no fewer than
five (5) re-boots were required by the installation process (ie the
re-boots were not required because of OS crashes).

Does anybody know why so many re-boots were necessary?

I've seen Win95 running... er, crawling sluggishly on a 486/33 with
4M. I have no idea how they managed to get it installed, but it was
there and it was functional if you wanted to wait 35 seconds to open
Notepad.

How can I set things up so that a 'welcome' email message is sent to a
new user when I create the account?

RH 6.0 mail/news/file server, no X.
