yikes! we hadn't considered that - although we _may_ have tested
it with the included ones at one point, I know that at the
moment it's using the old serial connector. I'll change that
tomorrow morning.

Transfer TTFonts from MS-Windows system directory. They work.
Should install TTFonts server and initiate it before calling X-Windows.
Actually the call is from rc.local.

Not a good idea, set up a username, you'll have a home directory

My HD light stays on if I play a CD and let it run right to the end, after
that the led for the HD is on untill I reboot, this exact same problem
used to occur in Win95, but I'm used to it now. It doesn't happen if I
stop the CD before it finishes playing the last track but does happen if
I just play the last track and let it run to the end.

I'd say do as much reading as you can before you start, read the MetaFaq
and any HOWTOs that you find relevant (http://www.linuxdoc.org).
Both "Learning Red Hat Linux" and "Running Linux" by O'Reilly are well
worth a read. It's a very steep learning curve, I moved from Win95
to Red Hat 6.0 six months ago and havn't looked back.
Winmodems as a rule don't work, but I think that some of them might.
Check the websites of the various distributions for hardware
compatibility before you make a final coice.

I've had quite a bit of experience with libraries and databases,
I'm of the opinion that this is not a simple job, and as you'll find
it gets quite involved and complicated (not the bar code thin, the
porject in general).
If you've got limited time to spend on this I'd definitely go for
an off the shelf product and use your time to evaluate the various
products as thoroughly as you can before buying something. You'll
probably go with Apache (http://www.apache.org) for your web server,
and the product that you buy will have to come with the CGI ready
written and in itself will take some time to taylor to your needs.
If you want something that's reliable it's going to be expensive
(but I have never looked into linux solutions specificly). You
may be lucky and find a freely available MySql library db complete
with it's web interface floating around on the net somewhere, but
I've never done any investigation into MySql so don't take my word
as gospel.
To summarise, spend your time evaluating possible off the shelf
products in as much detail as possible.
PS: The bar code thing won't be a problem, even MS Access can
deal with bar codes.

I'm afraid that Usenet newsgroup hierarchy doesn't exist on

I suspect they are not widely propagated in the UK at least. Can

Hi John,
?? Not sure what your talking about with "won't see it when reading
main". On NT with NS 4.72 the Edit/Preferences/Mail &
Newsgroups/Messages choice has a selection for Spell Checking. When you
write a mail message with New or Repy it will get spell checked on Send,
if you have the option selected. The spell checking is automaticly
invoked when Send is clicked. Its nice as sometimes I would forget to
spell check my outgoing mail.
Possibly this feature is a Microsoft enhancement to 4.72.

Subject: afio backup to jazz problems
Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 08:13:18 -0500
I'm trying to do an afio backup of my redhat 6.2 system to a 1 gb scsi
jazz drive. Here are the steps that I'm using:
- cfdisk to create a primary Linux partition (use entire disk)
- mke2fs to create an ext2 fs on the disk. Disk mounts and can copy
to it.
- from root dir "find . -path '/proc' -prune -o -print | afio -o -z
-Z -v /dev/sdb1"
The backup runs and writes to the disk but at the end the disk can't be
read. Running e2fsck reports that there is no file or directory while
trying to open /dev/sdb1 and then suggests an alternative superblock.
Try that and it reports a whole bunch of bad inodes. I've tried several
variations such as setting the block size in both mke2fs and afio to
1024, running the backup with dev/sdb1 mounted and unmounted, doing the
backup on a small sub directory to ensure that the archive isn't bigger
than 1 gb and some other things that I can't really remember.
One thing that seems odd is that cfdisk (and fdisk) will not let me
change the partition fs type to ext2. After mke2fs it is listed as
ext2, but after trying the backup it is listed as Linux again. I
haven't tried tar yet because I've developed a serious fixation on afio
and need help!!
Thanks,
Nick

I have two machines with this card. I use the SVGA aand it works fine
for me.
You may have to tell it how much video ram it has. On one machine that
has an integrated video Xconfigurator detects the internal video, even
though it`s turnned off in the BIOS, the installation programme detected
the the TNT.

http://www.netcraft.com has lots of information along those lines.

Hi,
I have a Winfast TV 2000 card and tried to use it with my Linux (kernel
2.2.13). I have tried to compile bttv-0.6.4h, but got the following errors :

Could someone tell me what I did wrong, or the proper steps to set this
up in my Linux ?
I don't want any fancy functions, I only want to watch TV with my Linux
box :)

Subject: Linux email and file rights problems
Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 13:30:02 GMT
Hi people,
I am new to linux and I am having trouble with it. When I log into the
system it tells me that dev//tty0 (i think) is read only. I cannot send
any emails or delete any files as it tells me that the file is read only.
I think the whole drive is read only which is why I cannot do anything.
Does anyone have any ideas how to restore the drive back to the way it was.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Paul.

/dev/ttyp1: Read-only file system when i log in.
I cannot sent emails or ftp, neither can I delete any files as I get an
error message saying that this is a read only file.
Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks.

1) check if you have Glide installed
2) run quake2 as root
3) install Device3Dfx
4) check if other 3Dfx programs runs OK
if all of that falls - please write something more about
"quake suddenly receives a SIG11" - I hope SIG11 appear
_before_ game begins?

I've had hardware-accelerated OpenGL on my machine for months. Other
people have for years. Free OpenGL, that is (Mesa).

Direct3D is not built around a single dogma at all (it's a kluge).
Anyway, it surprised me, too, that OpenGL's idea is to provide an API
that is as easy to implement in hardware as possible. The Red Book
(i.e. the official OpenGL manual) told me so.
