Bob / Bill has revealed an ignorance of a number of things, a number which
is increasing rapidly...

Definitely the latter - bill|bob is a troll, and a rather poor one at that.
a few keystrokes and he ceases to be a problem ;-)

True, very true - Linux has done well thus far just through word-of-mouth
and the advocacy of it's users (now including yours truly, a recent re-convert)
More good, positive and truthful press is a good thing IMHO.

Aye, both the KDE and Gnome folks have done particularly well in this area,
and in less time than it's taken for MS to come up with a WinNT service
pack ;-)

Video Chip is WD9710 (on Paradise Pipeline 64 card with 1MB RAM).
Installed Linux 2.1.132 (on top of a Debian 2.0.34 system), created Frame
Buffer device /dev/fb0 as described in http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/,
but xinit comes back with message:
exec of /usr/lib/X11/XF68_FBdev failed.
The executable is there, extracted from
http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/XF68_FBDev.libc6.tar.gz.
I have no idea what to look for now. Any and all suggestions will be greatly
appreciated.

Sorry...
To clarify my problem, the GroupWise being used has an Internet Agent
Gateway that handles POP3 and SMTP - internal mail runs IPX but anything
addressed outside is passed to the TCP/IP handlers of Novell - also, the
Novell version used has an Internet Access Server software that can
establish PPP connection with an ISP (actually, I'm trying to configure MX
records at the ISP end as well and I'm not really well informed with this
end of things ;-) ).
I know the theory behind what needs to be done, but I'm not well informed of
configuring the Linux end for MX records and zone file/s - can I just edit
the current zone file and insert an "IN MX 5 mail.novell_lan.com.au" or are
there other files needing updating like "reverse zone files?".
Note that there is no DNS on the Novell LAN and I will be configuring static
IP addressing as it's only a small LAN.
Anyway, thanks for the information and I'd appreciate more help from
anyone...
Thanks again

Is this the same Emacs in both cases? The Help menu has an entry for
the Emacs version.
Using C-v for pasting is CUA style keybindings, and I have heard
rumors that it is possible to make XEmacs have these bindings. I'm
not sure how to turn that off, though.

Yes, I am. At the time that each was released, they were
"state of the art". And, actually, I would argue that MS-DOS 1.0
should have cost alot more than win98 because of the inital
developement cost.

$200 bucks? Were you wearing a mask when you got that deal? I
don't remember the exact price of the original IBM PC, but it
seams that it was over $4000. I bought a XT clone in 1987 and
it cost $1700 (20M MFM disk, 256K memory, CGA graphics).

Are you saying that inflation since 1982 is 300%? I don't have the
exact figures, but I don't think so. I don't believe that bread
prices have gone up more that 20%. And as far as computer equipment
goes, well, it has a negative inflation rate (except for Microsoft).

Well, with that criteria. Where I work, a medium sized insurance
company, over the last year we have started migrating all our paper copies of
insurance policies from, well, paper to disk image. We run the software for
viewing and searching on a NT server that is up 24/7 baring stupid password
tricks(short boring story). The server runs a SCSI drive enclosure with three
23g hard drives with about 40g of data on them so far.
Backups(CD's) are maintained at 2 locations, a separate building about
200 feet from the main building and a archive vault approx. 90 minutes away.
Of course this is the same procedure we have used for our Mainframe data
backups.
If we lost the server PC would it be a disaster like you described,
no, but then if anyone put themselves into that position they should be drawn
and quartered and the pieces scattered to the 4 winds, but that is my opinion.
Do we have disaster plans, of course, and they are reviewed and tested on a
yearly basis.
That is just one example, is it stop the world I want to get off
critical, no. But it would be a major pain reloading the CD's to a new hard
drive, and the people doing the imaging might lose sometime if the temporary
storage disk filled up before the new server was in place.

Read the following recognizing that I have spent about two weeks researching
fax servers on UNIX and in no way should be considered an expert!!!
There doesn't appear to be a "standard" for faxing from apps via a printer on
*nix. Some creative programming on the part of your Sysadm could potentially
come up with a way of doing such as the one described above. I don't
neccesarily belive that using some type of script and X to be evil; however,
it would take some serious planning to put together a routine that would be
robust and supportable.
At this time, there doesn't appear to be sufficient demand for this function
in the *nix world for someone to write it. In another response to the
original post, someone lambasted *nix if other OSes had it and *nix didn't.
The reality of markets is that if there isn't sufficient demand then the
product doesn't get created. *nix is still a specialty OS. In general, it is
not the desktop for productivity applications (wheter ideally right or wrong).
Consequently, when a special purpose programmer needs to fax from their app,
they take care of generating the appropriately file to turnover to the fax
app.
If your and others on your systems need faxing from your applications via a
printing interface (lpr/lpd), then talk to your Sysadm about writing an lpd
filter that will prompt you for a fax number and then submit the output to
your fax process.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
William

just use:

which will work if root owns the file (otherwise, use:
chown root.root filename
to set the ownership) but it wont work for shell scripts.
