Typical of an interrupt conflict. Apparently you are talking about an
ISA internal card modem. Read the modem HOWTO (or resolve your
conflict without reading the howto, but resolve it you must ;-).

Hi,
I have an old noname PC with a Cyrix Cx486DX2 at 66 MHz, 32 MB RAM and a
VLB IDE-Controller with a Holtek HT6560B chip.
I never got the second IDE port working, but now I saw in the
2.3.99-pre8 a new version of the HT6560B driver, so for curiousity I
compiled a new kernel with ht6560b support.
This kernel does not detect the HT6560 at all, but the system comes up
and dmesg gives:
Linux version 2.3.99-pre8 (root@eddie) (gcc version egcs-2.91.66
19990314/Linux
On node 0 totalpages: 8192
zone(0): 4096 pages.
zone(1): 4096 pages.
zone(2): 0 pages.
Initializing CPU#0
ide_setup: ide0=ht6560b
kmem_alloc: NULL ptr (name=unknown)
ht6560b: PORT 0x3e6 ALREADY IN USE
The problem is the kmem_alloc error. The ht6560b error is a result of
the kemem_alloc failure.
Has anybody seen that also? I don't want to bother the kernel hackers
with an already known bug...

I've got gcc, gcc-cpp and make installed... What else do I need? Thanks!

Subject: distro-related supermount? problem
Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 16:23:44 GMT
Hi,
I reinstalled my Mandrake 7.0 for various resons.
I discovered that apparently one must NOT try to specifically
declare an /etc partition, or else the system will hang solidly
after declaring it can't find inittab or any other initialization
files. Took me about three reinstalls to figure out what the fsck
was going on.
What worked for me here was to choose "auto configure" from the options
in the partition options, then remove the enormous "home" partition and
put in smaller stuff as desired, such as "etc2", "var2" and so on. I'm a
single user and don't need about 14G of home space!
However, Mandrake has a few more tricks up its sleeve-
The problem I'm having now is that I select "supermount" when the
option presents itself. On booting into Linux, I get errors to the
effect the kernel is not enabled (wrong word? I'm in W98!)
for supermount, and my 2 SCSI CDROMs and the floppy do not get mounted.
What the heck is *this* all about?!
Typing "mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom" mounts the
appropriate CDROM properly, but what about Supermount? And
besides, after I've done that, the next time I boot Linux
it hangs after "mounting local filesystems".
That's where I stand now.
How do I get out of this one, please, guys??
Thank you very much.

Yes, that's what I wanted. But that system here seems to ignore the
/etc/gettydefs file. It didn't exist by default, and when creating one,
it's ignored. Also, man login doesn't mention that this file was used.
>If this does not solve it just try looking at login, and maybe recompiling

Well, that seems to be the only way. For the source of login isn't
included on my distribution media, I'll have to get it from elsewhere.
But it was important to know that it only depends on this program. I
always thought it was part of the kernel itself...
Thanks

Well, it sure would be hard to read /etc/fstab without /etc mounted!
The usual is to have /etc on /. You _can_ do it as a separate mount,
but it'll take a little work and preparation and I don't think you're
at super-unix-guru level yet! So don't try.

I haven't followed the latest License Wars series, but I thought
the real contentention was between KDE vs. GNOME, with GNOME's
main reason to exit being that KDE wasn't GPL'd. Did I miss
a twist in the plot? (Yes, I agree that LGPL is a relatively
sane license, but sanity rarely has much to do with anything.)

Ranish Partition Manager is free and does the job. Provided that your
Windows partition is below your Linux partitions, you can use Ranish to
change the type of your Linux partitions to FAT16 or FAT32, then format
them. You can then delete them and your Windows partition will be
resized accordingly.

Have you tried changing the irq on the card. I had an aha1505, never
could it to go on irq 10 ( 11 was already in use ) even though nothing
was using 10, moved the jumpers to 9 and bingo the module loaded , no
problem. This was on a RH system but the aha152x module should be the
same.

That is OK if you have time to kill. I just want to keep

of the work the people building distributions have done.

In what way? I have several things that I maintain locally either
because they aren't in the distribution or contributed rpms or
because I need local changes. This set has become much smaller
over the last few years as most worthwhile things have been
rolled into the distributions. Using recent Mandrake and
VALinux base distributions and the stuff on the PowerTools
CD, I think the only updates I've been doing is adding the
latest Samba (via rpm update) and building apache from scratch
for a few machines where I want mod_perl and jserve (and
adding a jvm for those). Even amanada has been included
in the VALinux distribution.

This is your choice, of course, and having that choice is a
very good thing. You just have to realize that this is a
fast-paced business and you are going to be repeating that
work at least every 6 months just to stay at the point
where a single distribution 'update' run would put you and
you have to track all the bugs and improvements yourself.
I prefer to take advantage of the thousands of programs
that someone else has bundled in a workable form and spend
my own time on a few critical ones where I actually need
more control. However, even with these I would be perfectly
happy to let a distribution update that worked as well replace
my older version.

You've forgotten two steps:
# make modules
# make modules_install
After this, you should have a /lib/modules/2.2.15 directory, and you
can remove the /lib/modules/2.2.13 directory, as you aren't anymore

Anytime you do a kernel upgrade, you need to rerun lilo, or
(alternatively), you can put the new kernel image on a boot
disk. (That is a good idea when you are first starting out.)

Well, your listing only shows 'rhosts', not '.rhosts'. Do "ls -als" to
show the files beginning with ".".
If you're trying to get rid of 'rhosts', then try "rm -f rhosts".

As for linux, if it is dialing and connecting, then the modem is
working. more likely it is your authentication setup. Is your ISP using
PAP or CHAP ?
Sometimes the max speed you can get is dependent on the telephone
company setup, the number of analog to didital conversion between you
and them. take a look at 56k.com, I think there was an article that
discussed why 33k might be the max you can get.

You can try turning on IP forwarding.
As root at the command line or xterm give the command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Then connect to the ISP and see if that works.
Also if you don't have a static IP assigned by your ISP then you need to
set the default gateway to 0.0.0.0

It's not unusual at all for a 56K modem to connect at 31,200. It can be
due to many causes, one of them being phone line signal quality.

If it works under Windows, it's probably not the jumpers.
When you say "it returns error type 15", what is "it"? Is it in your
system log?
Also, what COM port is it supposed to be, COM1? COM2? Which ever it is,
check for the correct tty port being recognized by Linux (ttyS00 = COM1,
ttyS01 = COM2, ...). If Linux doesn't see the tty port, it doesn't see
the modem.

That's probably not relevant. Either compiler should be able to
compile the trivial executable that configure scripts use.
What does the end of config.log contain? My guess is that you're
missing the development version of libc. In Debian the package is
called libc6-dev. That's the package that contains the standard
header files that virtually all C programs will require.

Perry,
Double check that. /dev/ttyp1 is not a file system, nor a disk. It's an
I/O port.
Maybe some configuration file is munged?

How did you configure the DNS? It's not part of the Gnome dialer setup,
so how did you do it?
Or, put another way, what does your /etc/resolv.conf file look like?
