uh, i don't think any of them have a reason to go into such a complex
project as making their own compiler. That's sort of along the lines of
being a job for a separate project group (like KDE).

I believe there is a LUG is Clarksburg which is about 2-2.5 hours south
of me, so maybe halfway between me and Beckley. I don't have the URL
anymore but I believe I found it by going to linux.org and looking for
the list of LUGs on their site and eventually finding the list for WV.

if you end up trying out Pan you will probably need to upgrade your glib
and gtk libs. That's what I had to do but it depends on the distro you
are using (newer distros probably include newer versions of the libs).

If u need help doing all that let me know. I did the process 2 times,
once on this computer and once on my laptop. No major trouble on either
one (mostly since both were using suse 6.3)

Hi,

I resorted to changing the pam file /etc/pam.d/rsh, replacing the 'required'
clause of each 'auth' line with 'optional'

Opens as big security hole - but never mind (the firewall should protect me
....)

There are many good Linux distsributions that boot off one or two floopy
disks (such as LOAF, FD Linux.etc.), but are there any that have GUIs, and
that are not just command line systems?
Only a simple GUI (so that it is only on a few disk), and not on loads of
disks as I don't have much memory (8 Mb).

Would top show anything useful here? If it is thrashing, Netscape
would not be using much cpu time; it would be waiting for IO. BTW, top
can list the most memory-intensive programs instead by typing "M"
(without the quotes) to it.

Let us ask a few questions first:

How much memory does the O.P. have on his machine? If less than 64
Megabytes, he can expect trouble with a program like Netscape (more
trouble, that is, than with more memory).

How much swap space does the O.P. have for his machine? Is it a file
or a partition?

Does he run any other program(s) using a lot of memory at the same
time?

Hi,

I need some help on printing graphic files from a RH 6.2 server.

I have a bunch of small graphic files (EAN barcode) in png and gif format that
I want to print out on a HP LaserJet 2100 without Postscript support. The
printing will be controlled by either a Perl or Shell scipt, so I am looking
for a lpr-type of command or utility for sending graphic files to the printer.

Does any one know of such command or a way to handle this? many thanks.

and then if just hangs.

What really puzzles me is that if I reboot into Windows, I'm able to
retrieve the message(s) without any problem.

I've made no config changes at my end. Yesterday things worked. Last
night they quit working. That it still works under Windows makes me
believe there's something I can do to get it working under linux again.

Any help or ideas would be appreciate.

Oh, really? Looks to me like there's about 64M available.... Your BIOS
is reporting the memory size in a screwy way; boot with
  LILO: linux mem=512M
instead of what you normally type, and edit /etc/lilo.conf so that the
line
  append="mem=512M"
is present above the first image= line, then rerun lilo.

It's really odd that you didn't notice this using any of the system
information tools, and even with "only" 64M, Netscape
isn't such a bloated sack that it takes 10 minutes to do anything.
There may be another problem--did you make a swap partition of any size
at all? You generally want one, even if you have a large amount of RAM,
for various reasons. It helps performance when the system can shuffle
unused processes from RAM to swapspace, for one. 128M would probably do
you just fine; either make a swap partition or do:
  dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=128
  sync && sync
  mkswap /swapfile
  swapon /swapfile
and add /swapfile to your /etc/fstab .

OK, what's up with that? I wouldn't worry about that unless you have
any USB devices you Can't Live Without, but upgrade your kernel from
whatever RH shipped to 2.2.18 anyway...

And did you edit your MAC addr there, or does the module not recognize
the rtl8139's MAC addr?

>char-major-145

This is the device for a SAM-9407-based soundcard. Are you sure this is
what you really need? The ac97 files in /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/
don't seem to mention this type of soundcard at all, and the ac97 is
supposed to have the same interface as the cards that are supported by
the kernel's OSS drivers. You should search comp.os.linux.hardware for
"AC97" and possibly your motherboard name; http://groups.google.com/ .

kernel-2.2.18, bash-2.03.0(1), fileutils-4.0l and util-linux-2.10f-5.1
The last two containing ls and more respectively.

The single file per line that root experienced in 'more' is the result
of having the ls -C option unset.

My own bashrc has ls aliased as 'ls --color -CF'.

To copy a data CD:
[insert data CD]
  dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/tmp/image.iso bs=2048
[remove data CD, insert blank CD-R(W) into writer]
  cdrecord -v dev=0,1,0 speed=4 /tmp/image.iso

This makes an exact copy of everything on the source CD, but only works
for data CDs. Certain game manufacturers have started putting
unreadable sectors in certain spots on their CDs to foil this; see the
old days where DOS games would have bad sectors in certain places... If
you want to copy an audio CD, use cdparanoia and the -dao switch of
cdrecord, making sure to read the man pages first.
