Has anyone here been successful configuring Linux (SUSE 6.3) for the
onboard sound card of the ASUS K7M motherboard?
The ASUS manual does not say what kind of sound chipset is used,
but says that it's AC'97 V2.1 CODEC compliant.

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm serching for a word of advice.
I'm searching for a project to work at
(starting from zero [maybe better] or
running).
The point is that I've not strong C
knowledge, so I would like to learn...
Anyway I'm not a total unable
and I've years of experience using
Linux and some practice in administration...
I think moreover that the better way
to learn how to write software is to write
it, so I would like to learn doing it!
So, I'm searching for a *baby* project,
where it is possible to learn...

Does it exists?

Thanks,

The current Linux Journal has an article along these lines.

Given the non-package specific dependency checking tools already in
Linux, one would think that you could build a dependency database
quite independent of rpm or deb.

Err, if this is the only source the administrator has for Linux info they
are clearly soon to be fired.

As to reporting bugs. All the various distributions have well known
addresses listed in their docs to which bug reports can be sent. If you are
doing it yourself from raw sources, then you shouldn't need to be told where
to report bugs - hint: the author's address is usually plain to see in the
sources.

Did you try the soundblaster option? Most cards tend to have some

strange. linux has not been forked, and it has support for many

I'm not sure, but I *THINK* that the K7M uses the VIA sound chipset. If
that's the case, you might be able to get the onboard sound working
using ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture). The homepage is
http://www.alsa-project.org/ .

Hope this helps...

Hi,

Thanks a lot for yor reply.
Well, the thing is, not only I'm 200% sure that this message
wasn't displayed all previous years, but my rc.6 even survived
;-) my hand edition recently. I see something concerning
/etc/fastboot in rc.6, which is absent on my system (at least
now), but I don't know what "! -f" means - can it be that this
file got lost and that's the reason I'm seeing this message now ?

I haven't found anything concerning /etc/fastboot in rc.S :-(
so I don't know how rc.S my trigger this message in rc.6.

Thanks again,

But there is no reason to expect it to be any better. Is there a tool
that tells you when the last program that uses a shared library
has been removed?

IIRC, amongst certain programming cultures hacker == "incompetent
programmer", but not cracker. I think this meaning is mainly popular
amongst old ironmongers, but I may be completely wrong :-)

Actually, Linux was forked several times in the process
of moving to new platforms and continues to be. Linus
himself even considers this a 'good thing'.

I would like to use raw devices in a computer with Suse 6.4.

I know that I have to link the raw device with the block device, as I
made in a Redhat 6.2: /usr/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sda5.

My problem is that I don't have any clue how do the same in Suse 6.4.

Thank in advance for any help.

Sure there is. It could query the actual state of the system
rather than just keeping track of what packages had been
        manipulated.

Assuming that you have a postscript printer, or have ghostscript set up as

I usually run kde instead of gnome on a Mandrake 7.0 box, so the
following may/may not apply to you, but I did have the user vs root
startup problem. It seemed that esd was not running and needed to run
as root. This was causing the delay at startup. Solved it by pre
starting esd in rc.local (maybe not the best idea, but it worked).

no Idea as to why you can't shutdown easily as a user, but could be
some other permission problem.
