I would like to understand why Linuxconf is running as a daemon,
when I thought it is only used when one needs to configure
some aspect of Linux

Irony is a wonderful thing.
That doesn't change the fact that the kernel mailing list DOES act as a bug
tracking system. You may argue that it isn't well suited for that task but
how can you argue that it is not, in fact, used in that way?

Freebsd & Linux follow significantly development models and thus have
different needs for bug tracking. One advantage of using a mailing list for
bug tracking is that it allows search engines such as deja to tie together
the development of various related projects (sane, alsa, apm, etc) in a way
that would be difficult with traditional bug tracking systems.

Hmm. There's a complete guide to building boot disks at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html
but I believe the problem's a bit simpler than that. Get a Linux system
running, insert the boot floppy you made, and do this:
# rdev -R /dev/fd0 /dev/hdXX
replacing XX with the drive letter and number that your root partition is
on.
Also, when you are compiling a new kernel, insert a blank floppy disk and
enter "make zdisk" where you usually enter "make zImage". This will build
a bootdisk automagically. HTH,

I setup my server with a sub-directory named 'network' and have lots
stored in there. But when I connect from a workstation via nfs, that
directory shows empty. The directory is owned by 'root' and has
'users' access. The permissions on the directory are 755. The nfs
share is setup for 'no_root_squash' and 'rw'. I am logged into the
workstation as 'root'. I can see all of '/etc' and even edit it if I
want.
And even go into the '/root' directory. But no '/network'.
Anyone know why? KAS

My linuxconf experience is with RedHat and may not be applicable in all
cases.
linuxconf runs as a daemon to provide html access to its' features.
You can set the permissions on it by running linuxconf in normal mode.
Config - Misc - linuxconf network access.
I think it defaults to no access.
Hit your localhost at port 98 with your browser of choice , log in, and
configure away.
I seems to me that most people don't need to be able to modify their
configurations
via a browser, so I thought it was strange that it defaults to starting
the service up.
( I don't think I asked for it when I was doing my install. )
I deleted the link to the /etc/rc.d/init.d/linuxconf file from the rc3.d
directory
that was starting it up at Init. A while later I did a port scan with
nmap and saw
the bugger was still there. If you don't want the linuxconf httpd server
running,
You have to comment it out in the /etc/inetd.conf and execute:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet reload or killall -HUP inetd
Otherwise inetd will restart it when a request comes in on port 98.
When I used a RPM to upgrade my linuxconf, it put the entry back the
inetd.conf
Some of these packages are getting a little too much like that other OS.

No, I would say that his problem has to do with the fact

I may be getting a DSL line installed, and I will set up a PC as a
gateway/server for the rest of my home network. I will use Red Hat Linux or
FreeBSD as the OS. Once the server is built and initially configured, I need it
to be "headless," i.e., be able to boot up without a keyboard and monitor. Any
further admin on the box will be done by telnetting in over the LAN.
Can anyone recommend a motherboard which comes with a BIOS that will allow me
to set up this kind of a headless configuration?

+ I assume that one would make sure that no users are on the drive. I've had this
+ happen after closing a shell without cd'ing off of the drive. Sometimes fuser
+ reports that root is using it when root definately doesn't have anything on it,
+ I've checked ps to make sure that updatedb or anything else that might be using

+ sometimes so I'm not sure. I'm using RedHat 6.0, I don't remember if it ever
+ happened to me with Slackware or earlier RedHats.
I don't know why fuser would be reporting erronious data, unless
you were in the /cdrom directory when you did the fuser, or perhaps
you were exporting the /cdrom drive on an NFS server... Anywho...
another program you should be able to use to determine who is using
the drive is lsof.
Maybe this'll help?

Subject: Re: Linux RedHat 6.1 Dial-In Setup Problem !
Date: Sun, 28 May 2000 19:43:47 -0400
It's hard to tell what the problem is from that description.
There should be some info in the /var/log/messages file.
You may need to change the section for your port in mgetty.config
I use: ( I have my dialin on ttyS1)
port ttyS1
init-chat "" ATZ OK ATM1L2Q0W2S2=255S0=0 OK
answer-chat "" ATA CONNECT \c \r
debug 0
data-only YES
issue-file /etc/issue.dial
rings 2
You may need something different for your modem, but you can set debug
to 9
This will write a copious log file /var/log/mgetty.log.ttyS1 ( or 0 or
whatever )
Between the mgetty and messages logs you should be able to get a better
idea
just what's wrong so you can fix it or at least post a more specific
question.
The mgetty log can get very big with a high debug level, so keep an eye
on it.
