Has anyone seen this behavior? Using AbiWord 0.7 under Linux (debian
2.2), text doesn't obey margins, it just keeps going off to the right
until a hard return. Same behavior whether typed in or importing Word
docs. Same verson of AbiWord for Windows works fine :(((.

Thanks.

compared to Windows or Mac GUIs. What can I do to upgrade X' performance?
Do I need a faster processor, or will a newer/faster video card help? Right
now I'm running original Pentiums in the 150-200 Mhz range. I have enough
system RAM. Video cards are ATI Mach 64 with 2-4 MB, or similar. Would
better video cards help, or do I need faster CPUs? BTW, this is for plain
old 2D stuff, no 3D or games.

The latest version of Netscape (no, not 6.0 beta/aka Mozilla), i.e. 4.75

To expand a TAR file:

tar -xzvf the_file_name_exactly_as it_appear_in_terminal

To find out how to use it, go to a terminal and type "man tar"=20

If you have already created a new filesystem on it then say
goodbye to them. If not, then try to copy partition to a file,
loopback mount it, and play with it.
If all you did is deleted the partition entry then you just
have to recreate it with fdisk and mount it.

Here are some quick instructions to copying the partition
and mounting through loopback.

cat /dev/hdb6 > dos.image
mount -o loop dos.image /mnt/dos
cd /mnt/dos
...

Check man mount. I don't remember the exact parameters for loopback.

It's very important to not ask dump questions in a newsgroup. Not only is it
bad for your image, it's also disturbing for people on the newsgroup. How to
unpack a tar file is the most common question and is asked a thousands of
times. Search the answer with a search engine, look in newsgroups or type
"man tar" at the command prompt.

The answer is out there.

Open a terminal window.

The command
df
will tell you how much each space each file system is using and
how much is free. You might note that the numbers don't quite
balance. This is because the system reserves some space in each
partition its use in manipulating the file system.
You can also get this information from the Gnome system monitor
utility.

To see how much disk space a subdirectory of the current directory
is using, use the command
du -s dir_name
putting in the appropriate directory name.
There may be a GUI method of doing this from one of the menus,
but I haven't been able to find one.

Try
info tar
But you will first have to learn how to navigate through the info
system, which you can do by entering
info

Or under gnome, you can access the info pages more simply through
the Gnome help borwser. You can probably also do something similar
under KDE.

One of the most important questions you need to answer is: What windowmanager am
I using?

KDE and GNome are very graphics intensive/memory takers, as others such as
Blackbox/twm are very light on resources and make X behave much faster.

Also, what version of Xfree86 are you running? Pre-4.0? 4.x is supposed to cut
memory usage in half, afaik. It should improve the performance very well.

I found the solution to why my ide cd recorder was not
recognized by cdrecord and xcdroast.
The followind line had to be added to lilo.conf :

append="hdbc=ide-scsi"

I think the reason is to tell the kernel to recognize that the
ide scsi emulation linkages would use the /dev/hdbc device
where the cd recorder drive was located.

I also had to load the ide-scsi.o module, which appears to
make the ide drive emulate a scsi device.

The lynch pin was the adding of the line to lilo.conf.

I've got a win3.11 box networked at home w/linux stuff. Works well. I
would highly advise downloading tcp/ip from MS's site instead of trying to
work with ipx for Linux (i've never tried but I'm guessing it's more
difficult to setup) and it's faster and more expandable. Installing
protocols in win3.11 is trivial, just like 9x/NT. Even looks the same.

Good luck!
