That works, and you don't even need the temporary variable,
but for the special case of date command, I think the easiest
way is
eval `date '+Wkdy=%A; Day=%d; Time="%r"; Zone=%Z; Year=%Y'`
Reasonably portable, too (ancient versions of date may not
support the +-formatting option though).

My sound card model is CS4236 and I check
The linux compatibility list and it said
that it support the CS423x, so it is compatible.
I tried using sndconfig and at first it detects
the wrong card but then I choose the right one an
tried different settings but all I get are errors
, I really don't know what the right settings are
because when a look at the windows sound config it
gives me too much info. If anybody out there can help
me to make sense of this info and put music to my
machine I will be very grateful, if you need any more
information please send me a email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have been studying linux and I am willing to get my hand
dirty if necessary even if that mean going to the guts of the system
Any suggestion you give it will be appreciated. Thanks

Actually you have those people who don't know what an OS is (and
think it's normal to reboot the computer every hour or so).
Anyone who knows what an OS is, know that DOS/Windows isn't.

I am using Redhat 6.0 and want to know how I can keep my Linux up to date
without having to keep buying new CD and reinstalling everything from
scratch.
My friend has Freebsd and he keeps up to date with cvs-up. Is there a
similar way to do this in Redhat? New Version is 6.2. Must I buy new CD
again and reinstall everything again?
Thanx for any good pointers.

It is not personal wealth that is important (Perot is an example of this). It is
having those who control large business and realise that bribing politicians is
in their interest. M$, hopefully, realised this too late (they are always late :-)

If you want to see corruption at work go and work in Thailand. If you are willing
to accept corruption then anything is possible. It is still the nicest country I
have ever lived in. For all its failings the Thai people are a class above all
others.

Subject: Please help me ./configure
Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 04:02:16 GMT
Hi All;
I am newbie, as you can tell by my question. I use RH6.1 with some
upgrades.
Every time I try to use ./configure or make to make executables I get
messages that some file not found.
Here is an example:
I was trying to install stereograph-0.10a. After using tar, and
untaring the .tar.gz file, the install file says to run
./configure from the GTKstereograph-0.10a. When I do that I get the
following messages:
[root@okc-27-143-008 GTKstereograph-0.10a]# ./configure
creating cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no
checking for working aclocal... missing
checking for working autoconf... missing
checking for working automake... missing
checking for working autoheader... missing
checking for working makeinfo... missing
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
Then I try to find aclocal for example, her is the result:
[root@okc-27-143-008 GTKstereograph-0.10a]# slocate aclocal
/usr/share/aclocal
/usr/share/aclocal/gimp.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/guile.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/qthreads.m4
/usr/share/aclocal/libmikmod.m4
Then I even tried to change some paths in the configure file to comply
with what I found above but to no avail.
What am I missing?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks;
Masoud

It is crammed with intriguing programs including the word find above.

It's pretty safe to install 6.2 packages on a 6.0 system as they both use
glibc 2.1.

Heh. No. It's a proprietary Unisys mainframe environment which is a
direct descendant of the EXEC 8 system that ran on the UNIVAC 1100 (the
hardware uses 36-bit words and is accessed using block-mode terminals).
It's about as different from a UNIX environment as you can find. :-)
Unisys has written a fairly good C compiler for the environment from
what I've heard, but all of the I/O would have to be rewritten, and it
really isn't worth it from my perspective.

I don't need cross-platform support -- my code is all written either in
a proprietary Fortran 66 variant (UNIVAC Fieldata Fortran V) or in CALL
(an OS2200-specific macro language from Unisys), and like I said it's a
tiny amount of code.

You apparently did not install much, if any, of the development
packages. For starters you will need: egcs*rpm, automake*rpm,
texinfo*rpm, autoconf*rpm, make*rpm. While you are at it, install
glibc-devel*rpm, and kernel-headers*rpm. This should at least get you
started.

Try
info libc

This will take you to the last index in the info file (the File Index). Use
the "p" key to get to the previous indexes.
If you know what you are looking for, most library functions have a man page.

Try a search on "socket tutorial" at http://www.google.com/linux
Other good sites are www.linuxprogramming.com and linuxdev.net.

This is completely off the cuff, but I believe they are floppy disk
image files, i.e. what you get when you put a floppy in the drive
and do a 'dd if=/dev/fd0 of=foobar.img'. My redhat cd has several of
these to create boot disks for differing configurations. To create
a floppy from an image file you simply:
(in UN*X)
dd if=foobar.img of=/dev/fd0
(in MS-DOS)
Use the RAWRITE.EXE program that should be found with the image files.

<snip>
In the case of RedHat Linux, the image files are actually images
of a msdos floppy filesystem. Once written to a disk, you can actually
manipulate them using normal filesystem or mtools capabilities.

You might try making another floppy.
0x80 "Disk timeout". The disk or the drive isn't ready. Either the
media is bad or the disk isn't spinning. If you're booting from a
floppy, you might not have closed the drive door. Otherwise, trying to
boot again might help.
The above is from the lilo README.
