Ok,
The reason I posted this was because I have a Linux machine at home which
consist of a Compaq Deskpro 2000 with a P133 (I ordered a used P200, haven't
received it yet!) with 80mb of RAM (upgraded from 32mb) and a 4.3gig
Harddrive (upgraded from 1gig) and a 2x CDROM and floppy.
My primary home machine is a Dual PII 400 with 512mb of RAM, 21" Dell
Monitor, ATI All in Wonder Pro 8mb Video card, 32x CDROM, 3 10gig
Harddrives, SoundBlaster Live, Well you get the picture!!!
My primary work machine is a Compaq Deskpro with a PII 266 with 192mb of RAM
My Linux machine at work is a Compaq Deskpro with a PIII 667 with 256mb or
RAM and a 13gig Harddrive and CDROM (more powerfull because it's newer).
I said all this just because as you can see, I am used to speed!! and would
like have something a little snappier than the P133 or P200 for Linux (mabe
the equivelent of a PII 366 or 400).
I just figured since those Sun Sparc pizza boxes are soo sexy, it would be
nice to get one with the performance stated above, install Linux and that's
it (I have no special need other than that, Sun Solaris is nice, but I have
no intention of running it).

Using fdisk or another partition manager to recreate the partitions from
the copy of the partition table you have printed out and kept somewhere
for just this eventuality.
You DID make a hard copy of the output of fdisk -l , didn't you, when
you created the partitions?

If you have saved the partition info (fdisk -i /dev/hd? i believe) then there
should be a good way to restore the partitions. I don't know exactly how, but
try to find some howto's, or maybe someone can tell you.
I had something similar too a few years ago with a fat32 partition. I used the
program 'tiramisu' (no no, not the food :-) to recover almost 80%, really good.
But I don't know if there is an ext2 version available too, try searching the
net.
good luck!

I'd like to backup my Linux box onto CD. I first have to create 650MB files.
I thought of using tar or cpio (followed by pgp and gzip) and then splitting
the files, but my kernel (2.2.14) has a 2GB file size limit. I have to find
a way to backup while creating 650MB files at the same time.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,

That's the way I was talking about in my earlier posting.. so use the -l
instead of my -i (was just guessing, but wanted to give some help at least)
.. but i also think the original poster didn't make a copy of it :-)
so for future: after an install / repartition, just make a boot disk and
put a copy of the 'fdisk -l /dev/hd?' onto the boot disk..

Yes there is. A while back i made the mistake of doing a dd to hda instead
of fd0 and lost my partition table. This was a stupid thing to do and even
more stupid was to have an incomplete (read useless) backup of my partition
table info. I got help from a guy (don't remember his name) who sent me a c
program that can retrieve partition information by scanning the entire disk.
For me this worked perfectly. I just used fdisk a filled in the paramters
given by the program and got my data back again.
If you like I can email a copy of this program to you.

Arnaud.

Error is wring FS type, bad option, bad superblock, on /dev/hda1, or too
many mounted file systems. FDISK reports ID c, Win95 FAT32 (LBA) on the
6GB drive.
On the 1.6 GB FAT32 drive that I can mount, FDISK reports ID c Win95 FAT32
(LBA). They appear to be the same type.
I am using Mandrake 7.0, kernel version 2.2.14.

Good Morning
Kernel building isn't the mysterious thing it used to be for me.
However, there are some curiosities that crop up now and
again and this is one of them.
I have recently built a new kernel to include my 3C905B
network card and exclude the IDE stuff as I am now all
SCSI. I get the following message during boot up:
Mounting /dev/pts.modprobe : modprobe ; can't locate module devpts
mount : fs type devpts not supported by kernel
Now I looked and looked for any reference to a devpts in my
kernel setup, especially the "file system" part and have come
up empty. I have tried different thing in the kernel setup and
get the same results.
Is there anyone out there that knows what this is? I'm baffled
I am on kernel version 2.2.13 (SuSE 6.3) on a 450mhz K6-2
I am now all SCSI as far as HDs are concerned. I don't supposed
this is related to the IDE stuff is it?
Any way, Thanks in advance

Greetings
By the sounds of things you are trying to NT is looking for it's loader.
I tried this once, NT and Linux, and found I had to load Linux after NT
and make do an entry in lilo for the "Mocrosoft Stuff". It would boot
to lilo first, If I selected the "Microsoft Stuff" from lilo it would then
proceed
to the NTloader next from which I could boot NT. It was a delicate balance
and took a while to figure out and get set up, so be patient.

I have a similar setup, I need to use
append="hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-floppy"
in /etc/lilo.conf The first two entries are the CDROM/CDRW drives - hdd
is the ZIP drive, and "ide-floppy" will make sure that SCSI doesn't
"grab it". Note, of course, that you'll need to have the IDE-Floppy
support compiled into your kernel (don't know if it works as a module or
not, as I haven't tried it).
