Thanks for the info, but the PATH variable isn't the problem. I need to

Grab a rescue disk, like Tom's: http://www.toms.net/rb/ and follow the
directions.
Boot with Tom's, mount /dev/hdb5 under /mnt and check to make sure
everything's OK. Re-run LILO, possibly editing /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make
sure that it's pointing to the right files (/boot/vmlinuz will become
/mnt/boot/vmlinuz , etc.) Or boot Tom's, find your kernel (usually
/boot/vmlinuz), insert a blank floppy, dd if=/boot/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0
bs=18k , rdev -R /dev/fd0 /dev/hdb5 , boot from the floppy and your system
should come up, at which point you can re-run LILO and/or fix things with
a larger toolset.
Remember this pain-in-the-butt series of events next time you decide that
formatting /dev/hda using Lose9x tools would be a good idea. And keep a
copy of the MBR somewhere safe so restoring functionality is easier if you
do this again.
>Did not want to us PQBOOT.
? You didn't want to use it, the system had problems using it, or what?

Well I also tried to get this feature of GNOME working with (server-start) and
EDITOR=emacsclient commented out, and I still had no joy.
The default editor is configured in GNOME by a drop-down list, and emacsclient
is not listed as one of the options, and there is no obvious way to type in
something like "emacsclient %f". I'd have thought that given that this current
version of GNOME is really tight that the %f oughtn't to have to be manually
specified.
That said, the file to be editted is not loaded into Emacs by invoking the Edit
command in gmc (the GNOME file manager) even though a new Emacs instance is
started.
It's a minor pain only, but I would like to get this working. I think I'll see
what happens if I select a different default editor, like Xemacs or gxEdit.
Best,
Darren

May I assume you are configuring these with isapnp, and the 2nd is at
the "other" address? Or that you used LANAID from floppy and then locked
the config? And that you did whatever Redhat wants in menus to add the
correct lines to boot files (which you would just type in with other
distros)?
It sounds a lot like you may have the two cards both at the "primary"
address and they are proving that you can't share memory locations. I'm
not even sure you can share the IRQ with this driver, but that's another
issue.

In the lastest EMacro beta, which is quite stable, I have
a sh-script called "edit". It automagically detects if emacs
is running, then invokes the client or full emacs, as needed.
If you rename the script as "emacs", then this is the only
command you need to know. You do need to know how to close
each session; I haven't figured out how to trap exit calls yet.
This is tested & working with xemacs. It should be easy to
adapt to gnu emacs; send me any fix, as well as the url for
gnu emacs gnuclient.
As for the gnome menus, you might try poking around in the
~/.gnome/ (?) directory.

Well, maybe it works to manually modify ~/.gnome/editor? I don't know
what can go in that file, though. But surely replacing the editor

samba problems.... I never could dance very well anyway!!!
I'm having problems configuring samba on a two computer network.
One runs Linux/Win98 and the other runs Win98. They are connected via a
crossover cable and Ethernet 3c509b cards. (When both run Win98 the network
runs fine!)
The Linux box is penguin (192.168.0.2)
The Win98 box is sunfish (192.168.0.1)
I can run sbmclient and access sunfish OK, however penguin does not show up in
Network Neighborhood on sunfish. I can also ping sunfish (or 192.168.0.1)
successfully, but I cannot open a browser and access it. I get "access denied".
smbmount lets me "in" from Linux, but I cannot do anything from the prompt:
[geoff@penguin geoff]$ smbmount //sunfish/c /mnt
Added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0

Timezone is UTC-4.0

smb: \> ls
ls: command not found
smb: \> help
help: command not found
smb: \>
Here are the results of nmblookup:
[geoff@penguin geoff]$ nmblookup SUNFISH

[geoff@penguin geoff]$ nmblookup sunfish
Sending queries to 127.255.255.255
name_query failed to find name sunfish
[geoff@penguin geoff]$
Why does this fail? Notice I tried upper and lower case both.
testparm also says my smb.conf file is OK, but there are so many options I
may have confused myself.
One thing I cannot get any information on is what, if anything, to set up on
the Windows side. I've already got TCP/IP and as I said before, the network
does work when both machines are running Win98.
I'm also a little confused about netmasks and gateways. Perhaps I've got these
settings messed up too? And passwords. The Windows box is basically a
one-user computer. Login prompts have been disabled. Could this screw up
samba?
I've been reading the Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 installation directions and
Running Linux and the man pages and it just gets more confusing the more I
read!! Do I have to resort to Samba for Dummies!!????
TIA,
Geoff

No you're quite right. One can comfortably squeeze what is _needed_
inside about 120MB if you know what you're about (indeed, 30MB for
a functioning X based system is quite feasible, but it won't have
development tools on board).
Redhat comes with lots of stuff and no way to say no to it. SuSE and
Debian have much more available still (debian potato is 2GB of
compressed archives plus bits and pieces from slink), but you can pick
and choose so that a minimum install runs about 40-100MB.

Any time you see a proto of "0x7eff", means you have the "sync" option
of pppd turned on, but not the "-s" option of pppoe. It also probably
means that /etc/ppp/options is not empty, which likely means you didn't
read the Roaring Penguin documentation. :-) Tsk, tsk.
Anyway, empty out /etc/ppp/options and all should be well.
