I hacked apsfilter to allow specifying in my lpr call the Epson600 with
360x, 720x, or 1440x resolution, hence three separate printers. The
associated printcap also has, of course, three printers. I arbitrarily named
them ep360, ep720, and ep720. If you email me I'll be glad to send you my
hacked apsfilter and printcap files in case that might help. (Address at the
bottom of this email.)

Hello,

how can I set default rights for files created by a ftp user?

I have a user, which should be able to transfer files to my
server. It works so far. But the files which the user
creates are not readable for all.

How can I fix this problem?

Thanx Holger

I've downloaded the new lilo but not installed it. It doesn't
look too difficult to install. It comes as a tar archive. So
you untar it and follow instructions for installation. It looked
fairly straightforward to me, but it is possible you will have
some trouble if you've never installed something that way.

If you can boot from a floppy, you should be able to reset the
master boot record by running
/sbin/lilo -u
Do that before you try to run the new lilo.
If you still can't boot windows, boot from a DOS/Windows startup
disk and run
fdisk/mbr
which should reset the MBR.

Thanks for the replys.

I'll take a look at the Step by Step site & see what I can find there before
I do anything. I've got a spare drive of approximatley the same size lying
around, and I found a "Hard Drive Upgrade" How To on inuxdocs.org.
(http://www.linuxdocs.org/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.html)    I'm thinking that
rather than setting up the new partitions to be identical to my current
drive, I can set them up as I want them, then just follow the directions the
rest of the way through, modifying the fstab as appropriate. Of course then
I'll have to do the migrate again back to my good/faster drive... maybe I'll
just get off my butt and get a tape backup as well.

Again.... I'm a beginner though. Does this sound like a bad idea?

Subject: Re: DELL's Linux price is HIGHER than Win98
Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 08:49:56 -0500

In my experience, linux is more difficult and time consuming to install
than Windows. More time = more $$. Also, any creature with a cdrom and
opposable thumbs can get a good windows install. Linux requires a
higher degree of knowledge and expertise (just look at the traffic on
the linux ng's vs. the windows ng's for evidence of this). More skilled
technicians = more $$.

Of course, if the Dell managers are economically rational actors, it
follows that they're pretty much going to decouple the cost-to-configure
from the price, and just soak the market for what it will bear. In
which case, the people who suggested that Dell scoped out its fellow
linux sysem vendors and set prices based on theirs are correct as well.

At first I, too, thought the difference would crop up in hardware
quality, but it looks from the original post as though both systems were
specced out the same. I suspect that the Dell default hardware for
Windows would feature a winmodem and one of those ugly integrated
mainboards with video and sound, whereas none of that stuff will work
with linux. That's not driving this $1000 price difference here,
though.

Hi,

I would like to redirect my e.g. "messages"-file directly to a printer
because of security reason. We need a hardcopy which can not be affecte of
intrusions to this system.

How could I redirect the incoming messages in the /etc/syslog.conf to a
printer device which is directly connected via the lp interface at a sun U10
or better: How could I do the same to a printer which is accessable via
TCP/IP?

Any suggestions would help me,

    Face the fact that breaking the law has consequences and that violating
the licence agreement, however stupid, strict, and unjust they may be, is a
crime. Deal with these consequences as professional as possible and do not
try to hide anything as this could possibly lead to more legal problems. Use
this experience as a persuation to your company that it may be in their best
interest to seek out "FREE" open source solutions to their software needs to
eliminate future licence violations, or just purchase enough licences to
CYA.
    What do you want from these people? Much of the reason for their
interest in Linux is your very problem... Who wants to pay thousands in
licencing fees for software that will be outdated in a year or two or that
they will only use once and a while? I know that Micro$oft won't ever get
any more of my $$$.

There's nothing wrong with this card. It worked out of the box for
me....are you sure it's not set to use DHCP or bootp instead of a static
address. If this is the case, it's hanging because it can't get an IP
from the non-existent DHCP server you specified.

Some time ago I read a document on Linux on a system with only 200 Mb

Does anybody know the article and it's location?

Well, it's not a winmodem for sure, unless I was duped by the store. I
think I should reset the serial, but I'm not sure which irq or port to
use. The card itself has no jumpers to set. I think maybe I should try to
use Linux Plug-N'-Play. What do you think?

Hey Jim,

Is pnpdump a plug-N'-play command? I'm kinda a newbie to Linux. The card
itself has no jumpers on it to set. What exactly should I look for in the
dmesg output? I do see messages saying, "PPP line discipline regestered.
Registered device ppp0." Is that it? I've also looked at my /var/log/
messages and I see a message saying, "if-up-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on
/dev/ttyS0 at 11520. Mdprobe: can't locate module char-major-108

Does any of that point to the problem? Thanks for any help - mink

Subject: sendmail, how to set up auto forward for a group of people
Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 14:45:10 GMT

Here is what I want to do:

I have a group of users whose user names have certain patterns. For
example, all their names start with "john", like "john1234", "john
4567", etc. Those users do not exist on my system (Linux), but they
exist in a different database, along with their real email addresses.

I want to be able to handle emails for such users, like
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]". What will happen is a query to db will find
this user's real email and forward the mail to that address.

I want to use a mail forward program to handle it, but I need to trigger
this program. Normally one can put a line in .forward file under the
home directory of the user, or add an alias line in /etc/aliases file.

Since the number of such users are quite large, I do not want to create
all such users in my local system (so no home directory), nor do I want
to create aliases in /etc/aliases file for all of them (too long).

I wonder if there is a way to specify a group of users based on certain
pattern matching with regular expression in /etc/aliases file to achieve
this.

This is for a Linux, RedHat 6.1, kernel 2.2.12-20smp, sendmail 8.9.3.

Thanks.

Subject: Making a bootdisk with lilo

I try to make a harddisk-independent bootdisk (with root over NFS) using
lilo:

    lilo -r /floppy -C mylilo.conf

but keep getting the error message:

    open /dev/fd0: Permission denied.

Hm. I followed the BootDisk-Howto pretty strictly. This is mylilo.conf:

    boot=/dev/fd0
    install=/boot/boot.b
    map=/boot/map
    read-write
    backup=/dev/null
    compact

    image = /vmlinuz
    label = linux
    root = /dev/nfs
    append="single nfsroot=... ip=..."

There is copy of /dev/fd0 on /floppy/dev. Maybe it has to do with the
fact that the floppy file system is mounted on /dev/fd0, but without
that it surely wouldn't work either. Any ideas?

Regards,
Bernd
