I just installed RedHat 6.2 on 2 different PC's.
I cant seem to get web access to work on either
machine. The message says:
Forbidden
You dont have permission to access / on this server
Now I checked /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and it appears just
fine. I did have to tweak the ScriptAlias line slightly as it
contained an extra pair of ", but that dealt with cgi-bin, not
html. I have proper permissions set on the documentroot directory
as well.
Is this a known bug in RH 6.2?
TIA

Maybe your ipchains are configured for masquerading. Use
ipchains -L -M to find out.

At least one person reported the following to be the source
of the problem.
This is from a post in linux.redhat by Jan Johansson:
Yep, Linuxconf shipped with Rh6.2 is buggy. It destroys httpd.conf on
many systems (altough i do not know what the "trigger factor" is for
this bug)
Search httpd.conf for "Files" and you will find the
<Files ... ... ... > header
which is SUPPOSED to look like this
<Files ~ "^\.ht">
if it looks any other way, edit it, restart apache (FULL stop/start,
not restart) and never use linuxconf again. (or atleast not until
redhat has declared this a bug)
Or use the "real" linuxconf and not Redhats bastardized version.

It's a matter of taste. Try both and see which one you like...

Change the content of the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop to 'KDE' to use
kdm program instead.

Use something like 'depmod -v' to see which modules directory the
kernel is reading from and check if the sound modules exist in there.

Take your pick from StarOffice, Word Perfect, or Applixware.

'Gimp' is the closest here although it doesn't have CMYK capabilites.
It is probably adequate for stuff like web graphics but not for
publishing.

Not sure what Thumbs Plus and WinRAR are but XMMS is a good comparison

There is a RealPlayer for Linux at the Real Networks website.

XCDRoast is one that I have used.
In general, I suggest you peruse through TUCOWS/Linux and Freshmeat

The KDE browser is getting quite good in the upcoming KDE2
release. The browser was pretty stable last I tried it.

Find a RPM called mozilla-fonts which will fix this.

Linux can access VFAT partitions fine so no conversion is
necessary. However Windows cannot acces Linux partitions without
add-on drivers.

RedHat is a good all-around distribution but Corel Linux aims for the
desktop.

I've seen it work. It works well if you have lots of ram since Windows
needs a good chunk of memory in addition to that of Linux and X-Windows.

Doesn't work as well as VMWARE and it is still work in progress. But
it is free...

What you may got was a warning related to the 1024 cylinder limit of
the LILO boot-loader. Could you create another Linux partition beyond
that point? The ext2 partition can handle 2 Terabytes I think!

You shouldn't do a full switchover until you get very comfortable
using Linux and it does everything you need. There are many
applications not yet available for Linux but it is getting better. I
suggest you dual-boot for some time until you feel ready.

I apologize for not being more clear. I was referring to "out of the

mentioned this, and I actually tried the distro, and had some problems. I
didn't try too hard to get things working, as RedHat could configure most
of my hardware out of the box. I do stand corrected.

What are you trying to tell us? Windows doesn't lose data on power
outages, Linux does. This is one of the weak points of Linux, unless one
has a journaling filesystem installed.
Though most of the time you can recover Linux with fsck, sometimes it's
just doesn't work. This is when you hope your last backup is complete &
functional.

Hello all,
I apologize for disturbing everyone with newbie questions, but I'm sure
that someone out there will be glad to help. I have only Windoze
experience. I am getting a new comp (Dell P3 650mhz) and I am inexplicably
tempted to try out Linux. I have read that you can partition hard drives
and run Win98 and Linux on the same machine? I don't know much about MS-
Dos, so I am a little leery of screwing things up. Is there something
like "the" book to read, or "the" website to visit? What do I need to know
in order to not ruin anything? Thanks for your time!

Hi Ryan
You can most defintely run windows and Linux on the same computer and it
isn't hard to set it up to do so. The newest Linux distributions will walk
you through the partitioning durning installation so it is a snap. When you
turn on your computer it will ask you which operating system you want to
boot into. These distro's will also have good manuals to get you going. A
Pratical Guide to Linux by Mark Sobell is a good book and your local box
store will surely have others. Some of the distributions worth checking out
are
www.calderasystems.com
www.suse.com
www.redhat.com
www.linux-mandrake.com
www.corel.com
There are others but these tend to be very good for beginners and easily
installed.
Here are a few sites to check out but remember they are quiet a few out
there at are very helpful plus these newsgroups so if you run into a problem
you will be able to get an answer.
www.linuxnewbie.org
www.slashdot.org
www.linux.com
Hope you will give it a try and with a little time I would venture to say
that you will like it over windows

Hi Brian,
Thanks for clearing up there is something wrong indeed. Up until the last

Now this is on SuSE 6.4. I will try it on RH and see if it makes a

Ok, ok, so I'll call it a module then.
However you wish to term it, my monitor was not supported, but

I've installed Sco-Unix and even Xenix in the dim & distant past.
This time I wanted a distribution that was dead easy to install,

It's pretty easy to find detailed documentation on just about anything
in Linux. The problem is sorting through a huge volume of info to find
exactly what you're looking for.
Most people who switch over from Windows to Linux find it heavy at
first. Often you'll be scanning the documentation looking for a simple
answer to a simple question, only to find the simple answer buried
under a mountain of highly technical arcana you'll never need. We've
all been there. It takes patience to find exactly what you're looking
for, but you can be pretty sure it's out there somewhere.
Actually installing and setting up Linux is getting easier all the
time. I'd recommend getting a Linux distribution on CD-ROM. I predict
you'll get a lot of people advising you to go with RedHat or Corel
because of their graphical installation routines, but IMO that's bad
advice. I think it's best to start off with a clean and minimal system
like Slackware. The installation routine doesn't have a fancy GUI, but
it gets the job done. Using a distro like Slackware will teach you far
more about Linux than RedHat or Mandrake, or any of the other
elaborately graphical distros.
My advice is buy a CD and follow the instructions. It's easy when you
know how, and the only way to know how is to try. Be prepared to fail
a few times. When starting out, you'll learn more from your failures
than from your successes. But if you're no more stupid than average,
you'll have Linux up and running in a day at most.

Thanks for reply me but the solution is not that. My drive 0x80 is the SCSI
disk and the 0x81 the IDE disk and I have just used the "disk=... bios=..."
in lilo.conf but without solution.
Thanks
Stefano
