I now know the problem. In Solaris, there will be a file named .dtprofile in you
home directory.and you should uncomment the last line of that file in order to
let solaris to call ~/.profile automatically during your login session of CDE.

my personal experience with the 310 has been mixed
i have several in different systems, and have had no trouble
i did, however, have trouble with one that started to packet storm a few weeks

under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory,
you will find files like "ifcfg-eth0" , "ifcfg-lo" etc.
These are the files that list the interfaces.
When redhat systems start up, they start the "network" by using a script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network
This script looks in the first mentioned directory for interfaces, reads out
the parameters and brings up the ones specified as "onboot=yes"
For ethX, create a file :
ifcfg-ethX in the first mentioned directory X goes from [ X = 0, 1 ] for
your two interfaces.
Copy the parameters off some working file , and you should be fine.

Yeah, sure. I am not sure what ALSA is but I do have an SB 16 Sound
Card that has been working with all the recent kernels (2.2.14-2.4.0).
Just compile is as a module (sb.o) and run `sndconfig' (if you run RH
6-7) or just put something like this in your `/etc/modules.conf' (or
`/etc/conf.modules'):
>>> alias sound-slot-0 sb
>>> options sound dmabuf=1
>>> options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330
This is my own setup, of course. You have to substitute your own values
for the irq, dma, etc.
Good Luck!

the following message appears:

EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted!
I started a rescue system and ran e2fsck, but didn't help! I can't read
the man-pages because they are not implemented in the rescue-system. Is
there a possebility to fixe my HD without loosing all the data on it?
Thanks for any help

What does it matter what it's named, if it has the functionality you
want?
If you'll examine the man page for both Solaris mailx and Linux mail,
you'll probably find all the functionality you're used to, including -s,
-c and -b.
If you have some scripts that need it, then just
# ln -s /bin/mail /bin/mailx

Did you read the message I sent? I know you must have, since you sent a
CC to me, which I most emphatically did *NOT* want. Therefore, I ask
the same questions I asked on Usenet before. Til you find the answers
to them, I doubt anyone will be able to help you.
Did you try running Xconfigurator as root, did you follow the directions
on the screen, and does it spit out any error messages when you try to
configure a resolution like 1024x768? If you don't see your monitor in
the fancy list, don't worry about it, just pick one of the generic
options like "Monitor that can do 1024x768 @ 75Hz" and you should be
fine. Or go to the manufacturer's website, dig around a bit, find the
Hsync and Vsync ranges, and enter those in.

No, 'Doze has MSexChange, which is sort of an MTA if you bang on it hard
enough. MTAs are used to deliver mail from one machine to another in a
standards-compliant, quick, and efficient way, and if they can't deliver
mail directly to the machine it's supposed to go to, they "relay" it to
another MTA on another machine that's closer to the destination. This
relaying is the dangerous part; MTAs that are incorrectly configured can
cause a great deal of havoc as they bounce every message they receive,
go into "Sorceror's Apprentice" mode, or act as open relays, allowing
vile spammers to send their drivel through.
The idea that a normal user doesn't need to run an MTA came about
because... well, take a look at /etc/sendmail.cf if it exists on your
system and see if you can take a wild guess as to why.
>HOWTOs, and so my head is spinning somewhat. Mutt for the MUA appeals

Well, running your own MTA does give you the ultimate in flexibility.
It requires a bit of an investment in time. Originally, POP3 and IMAP
were designed to be used on a LAN, not for far-flung users--people far
away from their mailserver were supposed to get their mail via SMTP.
However, having an MTA and a MUA is more complex than just starting up
Pine/Netscape/Mutt when you want to read your mail, so the less complex
solution won out and users in most places just have a MUA.
sendmail, qm@!l, postfix, exim --take your pick, but sendmail is the
original beast and the reference implementation for SMTP. Any MTA will
do the job if it's configured right.

I guess people have engaged in flamewars over MTAs. *shrug*

Create proper /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file (man pages were installed as

necessary to start SNMP daemon on boot), and start SNMPD by invoking

Doh! I just installed SuSE 7.0, and Enlightenment is not in the distro.
Sawfish is used as the defalt Gnome WM. I tried to install E off my SuSE 6.3

My question is this: Has anyone installed the current download version of E

Subject: pitfalls of hdisk upgrade on laptop
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 8 Jan 2001 21:30:40 -0600
After all the advice I've rendered in this newsgroup, I find myself
needing some.
I just installed a 10GB drive in my laptop (Dell Inspiron 3200),
which had a 4GB drive with Windows98, old slackware, and RH62.
After backing up each partition (by installing the old drive into
my desktop and tarring each filesystem to a "server", I partitioned
the new drive (now attached to desktop) with partition magic, and
untarred the filesystems back onto the drive. Now I put the drive
on my laptop and it detects a 8.5 GB drive. I booted from diskette
and re-wrote lilo, but no joy. I get "LI".
I thought maybe that was because Windows was screwed up.
I tried to reinstall win98, and it still won't boot, (says bad disk).
I haven't tried to reinstall lilo, but I think my current track is a
dead end.
I suspect my options are few (I'll bet I can't upgrade the laptop mobo
to accomodate >8.4 GB disks). I presume I could locate some ONDISK
stuff from previous hard disks that I've bought, but I'd rather not.
One thing occurs to me... Boot magic (comes with Partition Magic).
Does this have any way to help BIOS past the 8.5 gb problem?
My other thought is to use fdisk to rewrite the partition table, setting
cylinders, heads, and sectors to >8.5 GB. Repartition with fdisk, and
go that route. (I think PM will have nothing to do with this scheme.)
If I put in bogus values, like 1024,255,63 for chs, will I run into
any translation problems between Win98 and Linux?
Incidentally, the laptop CMOS does not let me enter anything for disk
parameters... It apparently does its best, maxing out CHS, but I'm
guessing.
I suppose another possibility would be to locate a DOS 6.2 diskette and
try to DOS FDISK it. It would probably go along with whatever the
system board said.
Any comments?

Indeed. The use of the word "exclusively" is just _wrong_; one of the
major design features of the X Window System is the ability of an X
server to simultaneously service applications using multiple GUIs.
Thus, if using Konqueror required "using KDE exclusively," that would
represent a gaping huge flaw that _would_ justify tarring and
feathering the KDE team. But it's just not so. I can run Konqueror
simultaneously with:
a) Netscape Communicator, which uses the Motif GUI toolkit,
b) Gnumeric, which uses GTK and various Gnome subsystems,
c) EXMH, which uses Tcl/Tk.
"Exclusively" is just _nonsense_.

Eazel _now_ has a vested interest in GNOME representing a "defacto
standard;" that was not always true. You seem to be indicating that
they were biased _before_ they decided on working with Gnome, which
doesn't seem to make sense.

The reason being is that I can control the advanced functions of my printers
