I am running a dual boot Linux 2.2.14/Win98 computer with Linux as the
primary OS.
I will be adding a 70GIG HD soon for storage of various web log files.
Although I'll be using the drive under Linux for 80% of the time, I
still have to be able to read/write to the disk from Win98. Is there an
optimal FS for this situation? Performance is a priority over features
as the disk will be accessed by many users simultaneously under Linux.
Permissions, Owners, Special files and Links are not necessary. I would
only like to be able to link TO a file on the new drive from an existing
ext2fs if possible. All suggestions appreciated.

We still have a few 3430s running in our office. They're certified
for NCR's MP-RAS UNIX (SVr4) and Windows NT (3.51 or 4.0). I haven't tried
running Linux on them, in part because I've got surplus desktops on the

70?... ah. Make sure the BIOS on your machine can handle this, as Lose9x
uses the BIOS for disk access. Make sure you're using a Linux kernel

You can't have it both ways. For maximum performance under Linux, use
ext2, and access the disk from Lose9x using the "explore2fs.exe" that's
available on the Web at
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
Using FAT32 will let Lose9x and Linux read everything, but performance
will suffer under Linux, especially for read operations and if there are a
lot of people accessing the drive at the same time. This performance loss
isn't really noticable for a workstation, but I'll bet it would be for a
big server.

No. Lotus as of v5 only supports Win32 and PowerMac as a policy. If
you use any other OS, you're supposed to use a browser and enable web

After all the hassle, I managed to pinpoint the problem. When I was
creating user accounts, I was
using a capital letter for the first letter of the user account. Example: I
was creating accounts in the
format of Eric@localhost instead of eric@localhost. I discovered this
after it was recommended
to me by a user to check the aliases file, which I did. I managed to have
all email to Eric@localhost
forwarded to root@localhost, indicating that email was indeed being sent
through to my computer
from the internet. Once I did this, I deleted the old username and account
Eric@localhost and added
the account eric@localhost. It does work both on my local network and
from the internet.

Won't be happening until Linux version 2.4 is released, as the USB
code is in the 2.3.x versions, and distributions normally use
stable (right now 2.4.x) versions.
Linus Torvalds is out on vacation for a couple weeks, so there won't
be a 2.4 release until late June, which pretty much means you won't
see it burned into CDROM distributions until late summer.

The latest Mandrake is supposed to have backports for USB stuff inserted
into the kernel.
>The latest (unstable) kernel supports USB. You'll have to wait until
>it is stable before distributions will include it, generally.
>Otherwise, you can compile the kernel yourself.
>What's the point of having USB mice/keyboards anyway?
To make more money for the hardware manufacturers, naturally!
No, the idea is that it's confusing to have so many different kinds of
plugs on the back of a PC, so they all should be replaced with one kind of
plug, which every peripheral will use.[0] This will eliminate the silly
problems that occur when people plug the mouse into the keyboard port and
vice versa. Also, it'll free up more IRQs in the PC architecture, since
if the mouse and keyboard are USB, they'll use the USB controller's IRQ
and not have to suck up #1 and #12.[1] Not a bad idea in the abstract,
but the implementation leaves something to be desired.
[0] Unless you want to plug in a hard drive or video equipment, at which
point you really need IEEE 1394, which is definitely not a PC standard
yet.
[1] Thanks to bug-for-bug combatability, no piece of hardware will ever
actually be able to *use* IRQ 1, you understand.

That's more likely to be caused by the increased disk-cache. Windows uses a
certain portion
of the memory as disk-cache. If your total Memory is 256Mb the disk-cache is big
enough to
keep most disk-resident images of programs in this cache. So Windows is still
stupid, as it
allocates some memory always as disk-cache. Unix uses per default all
unallocated (== not allocated by a user program)
memory as cache-space and manages it dynamically.

A couple of questions:
In which file/s can I configure mouse properties like the mouse pointer
speed and mouse acceleration?
Software for Linux often come in .tar.gz files. What is the usual practice -
ie into which directory are these compressed files stored?
I understand the security risks of logging in as root, but on my new system,
logging in as another newly added user has been rather restrictive. It does
not permit me to access some files and thus I am unable to launch some
applications. Other than manually changing the access permissions for the
individual files each application needs, what else could I do to lessen
restrictions on a certain user?
If I run fips on a dual boot system (Linux and Win98) to create another
MS-DOS partition, would my Linux partition be overwritten?
Does a disk defragmenter running in Windows touch another partition it is
not supposed to read, and vice versa for a defragmenter in Linux?
If I wiped out my Linux partition accidentally, does LILO still load with
the boot prompt? Or would it hang the system because its configuration file
in the Linux partition is wiped out? Will my other OS still load?

Dont forget to kill all unwanted services, disable them in the inetd
configuration. At least you might only need:
* a proxy: squid and/or sockd
* a web-filter: internet junk buster (?)
* a chaching named: bind8x (?)
* a smtpd: sendmail 8.9x, smail or qmail
* a pop3d or a imapd
* a httpd: apache
* the sshd for remote login
disable the ftpd and the telnetd, you dont need them and they are
security holes.

Ctrl Atl Del doesn't work when X is running at the login screen.
I am using owm.
4) I don't see logging out option in owm.
5) When I use fvwm as my window manager, I tought I had problem with
my display when I move the mouse to right or down it moves to the
appropriate virtual screen which must be a feature of fvwm. Is there
a way to disable this. So that it moves the appropriate virtual
desktop only when I click on its icon.
Thank You
