Jose, you did not compile the NFS server kernel code! Reconfigure your
kernel, and say yes to be prompted for new, experimental and incomplete
code. Then the NFS server configuration option will be available to you.

Hi, I just installed Red Hat 6.1 with several programs being Netscape one of
them.
I have been able to get Netscape to surf the net and send/receive emails.
But when I try to use it to read Newsgroups Netscape keeps telling me it
can't do it because I did not provide a username! I have gone to
Preferences/Newsgroups, gave the name for the server (in this case it's
News) and input also my name with email address, etc.
Why does Netscape keep telling me it I did not give username? And how can
this be fixed?
Please copy your answers to my personal email account as well

Thank you very much in advance.

Sound very impressive, but since most applications I use are emacs, g++,
netscape and top... and that I don't need any other stuff, this seems useless to
me. I'm not looking for any user-friendly fancy managing program, I'm just
looking for a very stable platform for programming, a platform that would allow
me to configure it Exactly the way I want it to, I'm currently using RedHat 6.1
(for no apparent reason) and I've heard Slackware would provide me such
things...
I think I forgot to mention exactly what I was looking for, I was actually
wondering if Slackware would support same hardware as RedHat, security issues,
software available (I would need XFree86 4.0 for example...), etc...
I really thank you tho, for the response, it will surely be of use for others,
and I have a few friends that seeks user-friendly OSes other than Windoze for an
exile ;)
Thanks,
Simon

Easiest way is with Perl, I think:
perl -wne 'print if /STRING1/ .. /STRING2/' FILE
Will print all lines between STRING1 and STRING2, inclusive.
STRING1 and STRING2 are actually representative of any valid
Perl regular expression... perldoc perlre from the command line

Its a shell script, so you would run it like an executable. First make
sure it has executable permissions with:
chmod +x <file_name_here.sh>
Then execute it with:
./<file_name_here.sh>

Subject: Multiple NICs
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 01:47:58 -0400
Sorry for the x-post
I am just not having any luck with multi-homed systems.
I have a system that has three NE2000(ne) ISA network cards in it. Each
with their own IO and IRQ. These cards all work. I originally installed
FreeBSD and had to re-compile the kernel so that these cards would work and
just to try something new, I have installed RH, Caldera, Turbo, Slackware,
and now Debian linux.
I have not gotten all three of these cards to work in any distribution of
linux that I have installed. That said, I also have not re-compiled the
kernel because I am told I do not need to if I just load the modules and
then config.
One card works and is configured now. My intention is to get all three of
these NICs working and then use IP Masquerade to re-map ports for my DSL
line. Does anyone have a quick outline of what direction I should head in
to get these NICs installed? Once they are in, the services part is easy.
What are the files in the Debian distribution that will allow me to
configure the IO, IRQ, etc. for the other two network cards? Do I have to
re-compile the kernel?? I know, for optimum performance, I do, but I would
just like to work off of modules for now.
Thanks for any advice,
Zak

Fredrik,
I guess now you must do what you neglected to do before you did what you
did. You must read the documentation. Unless you backed up you data, I
doubt you will be able to recover if you picked 'Server Installation'.
But you'll know in the future to read the docs first by golly. :-)
Dont worry, it is a lesson even UNIX admins relearn every so often...

Yes, one of the things I truly appreciate about Slackware is its
adherance to the FHS. I also enjoy the fact that it does not hold my
hand. It is the most UNIX'y of all the distibutions IMO. I compile all
my own software ( If I can't compile it, it doesn't go on the machine )
so I am not worried about RPM databases in my case. I have had no
problems with Slackware 7.0 whatsoever.

Hmmmm.. Don't know exactly what RedHat supports, I dont use it for
matters of personal taste. I would venture to say if your hardware is
supported by Linux/XFree86 then you are golden. As far as available
software, I build my own, so I really have no limitiations... I find the
source and build and install it. I have compiled X Windows on Slackware
7.0 with no issues however.

I too, am a masochist. :-) I would not do UNIX admin for a living if I
weren't I suppose. :^) If you are a UNIX geek, and you dont what your
hand held give Slack a try... I Love it. However, everything Matt said
about Debian is true... If I had to use another dist other than Slack,
Debian would be it.

It will update your current system with the newer version of GNOME and related

On my Mandrake 7.02 system it upgrade just fine. However, I've a couple of

Thanks for the suggestions. Another friend also suggested xanim.
I downloaded and built it and was able to watch. The file I have in mind

FWIW, the Linux kernel _has_ this built in. The kernel uses the 'halt'
instruction rather than a busy loop (that's why the kernel reports
that it is checking the halt instruction at startup).
I've read that machines with Linux kernels run cooler than the same
machine running MSWindows because of this. It apparently also extends
the battery life on laptops because the 'halt' state takes less power
than a busy loop would.

That's what I am trying to say. Re-compiling properly will solve the lockup problem.
At least it works for me. Furthermore, I needed to decouple the modem driver from the
serial driver in 2.2.15 and 2.2.16. How did you do that without re-compiling?
