Subject: non-root chown system call

From: Marc J. Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'm writing a program that needs to be able to give a file to someone
else without being root. System V Unix allows the owner of a file to
chown it to someone else, but Linux doesn't.

There's a variable _POSIX_CHOWN_RESTRICTED which is supposed to
 control
this behavior, but I can't figure out how to manipulate it. By
 default,
it's declared as "1". I thought I should be able to do

#define _POSIX_CHOWN_RESTRICTED -1

to turn off this restriction, but it didn't help.

Ideas?

Seem that jre needs this command.

Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:46:32 GMT

From: radha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

To remove LILO I used "fdisk /mbr" which was supposed to restore
the WIN98 MBR. Now when I boot I get the message:
Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g.
  C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
None of the entries I typed at the A> prompt work.
I tried C:\COMMAND.COM, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM, A:\COMMAND.COM (with
a floopy containing COMMAND.COM).
I can't access WIN98, so I can't find the proper path to COMMAND.COM

How can I get beyond this? I want to boot to WIN98.

Thanks for any help.

Dear reader,

I'm busy configuring an amd athlon machine with a Viper 770 TNT2
 Ultra
video card. I installed mandrake 7.1 with XFree86 4.0 and have the
following questions:

1. which driver is better: SVGA or the NVidia driver?
2. can I safely switch from SVGA to NVidia or is it possible some
 problems
will occur?

Much thanks in advance,

It is not absolutely necessary; but it would be foolish to do
without swap except under some set of very special circumstances
(and you know extactly what you are doing and why). Swap space
on disk is perhaps best put into a separate partition (recommended),
but a file can also be used (handy for temporary needs or testing).

Virtual memory contributes to the reliability of an operating
system, which is the main reason you want more virtual memory.
Cost is the reason to use swap instead of adding more physical
RAM. You should consider your pocket book when purchasing RAM
(buy as much as you can afford, because Linux _will_ make good
use of it as buffers and for disk caching to allow your system
to run faster). But you should then engage in a bit of fantacy
to select how much swap space to allocated. Imagine the worst
case possible use of memory, and have enough swap space to make
sure more than that amount of virtual memory is available.
(Keep in mind just how cheap 500 Mb of disk space is today too.)

You can do other things, but that is the only reasonable thing to do.

 Thanks.

That means you can have a MicroSoft OS available also (and boot
 either
that or Linux), and when you have Linux booted you will be able to
read and write to the MS hard disk partitions and floppy disks.

MS file systems are not suitable for use with unix files.

Dear reader,

i'm using linux for about one year now and i'm asking myself: is
 there
something better? Linux is much faster and reliable than Windows
 Operating
systems, but now i'm reading about the BSD operating systems i would
 like
to have some information about the differences between them (OpenBSD,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux and maybe Solaris (is solaris free?)) at the
following subjects:

1. speed
2. reliability
3. networkingspeed
4. hardware support
5. amount of MB needed for installation
6. availability of desktop applications (netscape, licq, pine, slrn,
 xanim and
so on)
7. security

I hope someone can tell me more about these other operating systems
 or can send
me an URL.

much thanks in advance,

I believe it's because of the licence term by University of
Washington prevents distribution of binary or something
similar. In Debian, I need to download the source package,
compile, and install my own .deb package. If my suspicion

Very recomendably!
Actually you can install on/in FAT partition. Slackware has zip files
which contain whole working distro to be unzipped on DOS/Windows file
system.
Those are for "window shopping" as they don't perform optimally,
 neither
speed nor hardware usage (GUI in basic 640x480 256 colors).
Swap files - lets say that they are a must for newbie, when you
 become a
super-guru then you decide for yourself.
No recomendations on distros, whichever you chose - learn to
 administer
it, sounds more scary than it is but once over the steep learning

things are easy.

Subject: Cant create a partition with disk druid?? (newbie)
Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 01:47:23 GMT

Hi again,

I figured the best way to get out of my linux mess, was a complete fresh
install. Guess not, cause here is my problem:

I have 2 hard drives: one 13gig cut up for windows and one 5gig cut up for
linux.

The problem is that I can only create a swap partion on my 5 gig drive. I
have deleted all partitions in fdisk, disk druid, linux fdisk, delpart etc
etc and every time I come to disk druid in the setup. It says that I have
100% free space on my 5 gig drive, but when I try to create a /boot or a /
root drive it says there isnt enough space.

Oddly enough I can create swap files (as many , or as big as I want with the
5 gig drive?)

Why cant I make any other drives? I tried creating them with fdisk and
converting to linux but no go.

I did an Fdisk /mbr as well (just cause i ran out of things to try) but
nothing.

So I guess Linux doesnt want to go on my machine, but I am sure that there
must be something I can do.....isnt there?

Please Help!
