I'm just wondering why you're trying to compile it. It's worked
fine for me with RH 5.2 and 6.1 with the defautl modules. Check
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net for the rtl8139.o file. If it's there,
you can load it as a module and configure it using netconf or
edit the configuration files manually. I'm upgrading my kernel
and the compilation didn't work when I threw that file in the
kernel source tree. If the module is there, just use it. No
fuss. If you're just curious, I'll try getting the downloaded
source to work sometime this week.

Subject: RedHat 6.1 - GNOME help tool - segment fault
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 22:12:38 -0500
Anyone -
I installed RedHat 6.1 with the Gnome desktop. Worked fine when I first
tried it as root. Then I logged in as not-root, issued startx, and the
system had a problem. Unfortunately, I did not keep good documentation,
so I cannot tell you what the problem was. But, ever since that time, I
log in as root and the Gnome help tool abends with a segmentation
fault. I used the Gnorpm to query the helptool package - says it isn't
installed, so I click on install, it says it cannot install because it
is already installed. Then I use the Gnome file manager to uninstall
it, then do a re-install. Seems to go fine. But the Gnorpm still says
it is not installed, still says it is installed when I click install,
and still abends every time.
Anyone have any ideas on what is happening here? Please send or copy
replies to my e-mail, as the news server I use is a bit erratic. I
could just do a complete re-install of the entire system, but that seems
ludicrous.
TIA.
Craig

The others above have answered some of your questions. To gather data
specific to SSL, I suggest doing a web search (ala Yahoo, maybe?) and look
for SSL. Netscape has a very nice SSL 3.0 Spec on line in PDF format that
is really super. Also you might check with Verisign and RSA web sites,
too. There are a few white papers and some good reference material there.
Good Luck!!

This was a typo, I meant 1.1.7 and 1.1.8
You misunderstood what I said.
The 1.2.2 version is from Sun but similar to Blackdown.
With Mandrake I was using 1.1.8 from IBM. What is happening here is that SOffice
doesn't recognize the
directories of the JRE 1.2.2

The DOS fdisk dosn't read Linux Partitions. Boot up a new Linux
installation and delete the swap and native partitions. Then restart and do

I can't think of anything that you could have done to the hard
drive which would have prevented you from booting from a bootable
DOS/Windows startup disk. If it worked a short while ago,
in order to run fdisk/mbr, it should still work. Perhaps something
went wrong with the floppy for some reason, or you are inadvertently
using another disk, or there was coincidently some hardware
problem such as a failure of the floppy drive.
You could try
comp.os.ms-windows.misc
for questions about windows. But a bootable disk that stops working
suggests something more basic than a problem with either windows
or linux.

The only time you don't need to run "make modules & make
modules_install" is when you have compiled everything into the kernel.
(No loadable modules)

The quibble over whether TrollTech should loosen up its `QPL' as
KDE's license is still going on this month--check around lwn.net
or LinuxToday if you're interested. I'd say there are still serious
impediments to anyone linking to the QT libs, if they're committed
to keeping faith with the GPL <fsf.org>.
When Gnome 1.20 was recently release <see helixcode.com> the official
wm became sawfish. (There is such a thing as a `gnome-compliant' wm,
I'm not sure how you can tell which ones.) I haven't tried it yet,
but one reviewer wrote that there's a definite improvement (decrease)
in resources used.
If you left Windows to escape closed source bloatware, these might
be two reasons to stay with Gnome.
Enjoy !

echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_always_defrag
Or in RedHat 6.2 edit /etc/sysctl and make sure these lines are in it.
# Controls automatic defragmentation (needed for masquerading, LVS)
net.ipv4.ip_always_defrag = 1
Then restart the network with:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
To turn it off you would change the 1 to 0

Thanks for your help! My new 2.2.16 kernel works great without any of
that ramdisk stuff. Fortunately this is kind of a "play with" box
anyway, so I'm using it to learn how to do this stuff. Is there any
place you'd recommend to learn about kernel builds in addition to the

My problem is that the first thing I see is a page where the software does
an auto check for installed hardware in order to recognize which media

By the way, the computer runs on an old DOS version and the CD-ROM has been
